A diamond sword is a strong, versatile melee weapon, especially with the right enchantment, but it is not automatically the best choice for every enemy or combat style. Its exact base damage depends on whether you play Java or Bedrock Edition.
How much damage does a diamond sword deal?
A Minecraft Wiki mirror lists a diamond sword’s base damage as 7 HP in Java Edition and 8 HP in Bedrock Edition. Those figures are edition-specific, and the reference does not establish which current game version they apply to, so treat them as orientation rather than guaranteed stats for every release. Minecraft Wiki: Diamond Sword.
Damage per hit is only one part of a weapon comparison. Attack speed, durability, enchantments, target type and the edition and version you play can all affect which weapon is more useful. The available references do not provide a current, unified comparison across all weapons and both editions.
Which enchantments make a diamond sword better?
Sharpness for general combat
Sharpness increases melee attack damage, making it a useful general-purpose choice. Microsoft’s Bedrock creator documentation lists Sharpness for swords; that documentation establishes the enchantment’s Bedrock behavior, not Java mechanics. Microsoft Learn: Minecraft enchantable items.

Smite against undead mobs
Smite increases damage against undead-family mobs, so it is a more specialized pick than Sharpness. Microsoft Learn lists swords as applicable and describes the target specialization for Bedrock Edition. Choose it when undead enemies are your priority rather than assuming it is a better all-purpose enchantment.
Unbreaking for durability
Unbreaking reduces durability damage in the Bedrock documentation and applies to swords. It helps the weapon last longer, but does not increase its damage per hit.

Is a Netherite sword better?
According to the Minecraft Wiki’s Nether Update guide, Netherite weapons have higher durability and enchantability than diamond weapons and deal one more damage than their diamond counterparts, with the hoe noted as an exception. These are community-maintained reference claims; check the edition and game version you play before relying on precise competitive stats. Minecraft Wiki: Netherite.
Upgrade a diamond sword at a smithing table
The cited reference describes the Netherite upgrade recipe as using a Netherite Upgrade, a diamond sword and a Netherite Ingot. Minecraft Wiki: Smithing Table. This makes a diamond sword a useful weapon to upgrade if you want the Netherite weapon’s reported durability and damage advantages.

When should you use a diamond sword instead of another weapon?
- Choose a diamond sword for a versatile melee weapon, particularly when you want to enchant it for general combat or a specific enemy type.
- Consider an axe if your priority is high damage per hit. A community PvP tutorial highlights axes for high-damage hits, but that context does not make them universally superior. Minecraft Wiki: Player versus Player tutorial.
- Consider a mace when you are pursuing high single-hit damage. The same PvP tutorial highlights maces in a max-enchantment comparison; that is not a universal weapon ranking.
For a fair choice, compare damage per hit alongside attack speed or damage per second, durability, enchantment compatibility, the enemies you face and the material or upgrade cost. The best weapon depends on your edition, version and combat goal.
