Players enter the room code shown on the shared game screen, and their devices act as wireless answer pads. Guests do not need to buy the game, install a mobile app, or create an account.
The basic Jackbox setup
Every Jackbox session has two sides. The host owns and runs a Party Pack or another Jackbox title on a compatible computer, console, or streaming device. The host launches a game and makes its screen visible to the group, normally on a television, monitor, laptop display, or shared video call.

Players use their own phones, tablets, or computers as controllers. They open a browser, go to jackbox.tv, type the room code displayed on the host’s screen, and enter a name. Their devices send answers to the host’s running game; they do not run the game themselves.

That division is why a single purchased copy can serve a whole group. Jackbox’s official how-to page puts it plainly: “Only one person in your group needs to own a Jackbox product in order to host the game.” The controller flow also uses phones as controllers without requiring a special gamepad.

How to host a Jackbox game
- Buy and install a title. The host purchases a Party Pack or individual Jackbox game on a supported platform and installs it on the device that will run the session. Jackbox describes these as one-time purchases rather than recurring subscriptions; an exception is noted for Amazon Luna subscribers.
- Connect the display. Put the host device’s game screen where everyone can read prompts, timers, drawings, answers, and scores. A television is convenient but not a requirement established by Jackbox’s setup instructions; any clearly visible display works.
- Launch the specific game. A Party Pack contains multiple titles, so select the game that fits your group size and preferred style. Player limits and audience support differ from one title to another.
- Wait for the lobby code. The game shows a short room code in its lobby. Keep that code visible to invited players, but do not expose it on a public stream until you are ready: strangers who see an open code may enter the room.
- Have players join. Each person opens a browser on a personal device, visits jackbox.tv, enters the code, and chooses a name. Their names appear in the host’s lobby as they connect.
- Start after checking the roster. Confirm that the intended players are present, then start the round from the host device. Once play begins, participants follow the instructions on their own screens while the host display shows the shared game state.
Because the host screen contains the questions, timers, and results, every player needs a reliable view of that screen as well as a browser connection. A phone by itself is not enough if its owner cannot see the main display.
How do I join a Jackbox game?
- Connect your phone, tablet, or computer to the internet.
- Open a current browser and go to jackbox.tv.
- Enter the room code shown on the host’s game screen.
- Type a player name and submit it.
- Keep the browser tab open and use it to write, draw, choose, vote, or answer as the game requests.
The device is a controller, not a second copy of the game. If the host changes games or returns to the main menu, players may need to rejoin with the new room code. A browser refresh can also remove a connection, so avoid refreshing during an active round unless troubleshooting requires it.
Do you need the app, an account, or a special controller?
No mobile app is required for the normal controller flow. Jackbox’s support guidance says players use a web browser at jackbox.tv and do not need to install an app or create an account. The same guidance describes ordinary phones and other internet-capable devices as the intended controllers, so a dedicated console gamepad is not necessary for guests.

The host still needs the actual game installed on a device that can run it. Guests do not need to open a storefront, download the Party Pack, or purchase their own copy. One host copy is enough for the group, although the host’s platform, operating system, and the selected title must be supported.
How many people can play?
There is no single Jackbox player limit. The maximum applies to the individual game, not automatically to the entire Party Pack. Check the exact title before inviting a large group, and distinguish regular player slots from audience participation.

Jackbox’s press materials also describe current-generation titles as capable of supporting up to 10,000 audience members. That is a broad publisher capacity statement, not a promise that every title or mode accepts that many people. For planning a real session, use the per-game support table and the selected game’s own lobby behavior.

These numbers are publisher-reported capacities. They are not the result of an independent player-capacity test, and they can change as titles and support documentation are updated.
What is Audience Mode?
Audience Mode lets people take part after the normal player slots are full, when a title supports an audience. Audience members do not necessarily receive the same controls or scoring position as regular players. Their actions depend on the specific game and mode.
What an audience can do
- Vote on answers, drawings, rankings, or outcomes.
- Add votes or other input that changes a result.
- Interact between rounds rather than submitting every main response.
- Join as a collective team in a mode designed for audience play.
For example, in Poll Mine streamer mode, the audience can vote and guess together as one group against the streamer players. That is different from giving every viewer an independent regular-player slot.
How to decide whether a title supports an audience
Check the official player-count table for the exact game and look for its audience designation. Do not infer support from the fact that another game in the same Party Pack accepts an audience. Also check the game’s mode selection: a title may offer audience interaction only in a particular mode, and the audience’s powers can vary between modes.
Can you play Jackbox with more than eight people?
Yes, but only when the selected game provides either more regular slots or an audience. A game capped at eight regular players cannot be turned into a ten-player game simply by adding more phones. Instead, the extra people must join as audience members if that title supports them. For a group that wants everyone to submit full answers, choose a title whose regular-player maximum reaches the group’s size, such as the listed 2–10 range for The Jackbox Survey Scramble.

How to play Jackbox remotely
Remote play keeps the same architecture: one person runs the game, everyone watches the host’s game screen, and each participant joins at jackbox.tv with the room code. The difference is that the host shares the game display through a video-conferencing service or uses Steam Remote Play Together.
Remote setup with screen sharing
- The host launches the game locally and starts a lobby.
- The host opens a video call and shares the game window or display, including the room code.
- The host sends the room code privately to intended participants rather than posting it in a public chat or stream.
- Each remote player opens jackbox.tv in a separate browser tab or on a phone and joins with the code.
- Players keep the shared game audio and video available while using their personal device for answers.
Remote setup with Steam Remote Play Together
Where the host’s Steam version and network setup support it, Steam Remote Play Together provides another way to deliver the host’s game view to remote friends. Participants still use a browser at jackbox.tv for the controller interface; Remote Play does not eliminate the room-code step.
Timers, passwords, and public streams
Some titles offer extended timers, which can make remote sessions easier when video or audio introduces delay. Availability varies by game. Jackbox also documents password-protected rooms for a set of titles, but not every game has the same protection. Confirm the options in the particular title before promising a password or longer timer.
If you are streaming publicly, hide the room code until the intended group is ready. Once a code is visible, unknown viewers may join and disrupt the lobby or submit unwanted content.
Browser and device requirements
Jackbox’s supported-browser page was updated on October 20, 2025. The listed minimums are useful when diagnosing a connection problem, but browser support is a moving target: update the browser first, then consult the current support page if a version has changed.

Party Pack 11 has additional requirements for particular games. Hear Say needs microphone access, and Cookie Haus needs GPU hardware acceleration. If either title fails to load or behaves incorrectly, check those permissions and browser settings instead of assuming the room code is wrong.

Troubleshooting a failed join
The room code is rejected
- Verify that you entered the current code from the host screen; codes change when a new lobby is created.
- Check for a mistyped character and make sure you are on jackbox.tv, not a search result or an unrelated page.
- Ask the host whether the game is still in its lobby and whether a public stream has caused unwanted players to enter.
The page loads but the controller disconnects
- Switch from a weak cellular or Wi-Fi connection to a more stable network.
- Update the browser to at least the version listed for your device category.
- Keep the controller tab open and disable battery-saving behavior that suspends it in the background.
- If the host changed games, leave the old lobby and join with the newly displayed code.
The game cannot use a microphone
For Hear Say in Party Pack 11, grant microphone permission to the browser and confirm that the intended input device is selected in the operating system. A browser that meets the version minimum can still block the game if microphone access was denied.

For Cookie Haus, enable GPU hardware acceleration in a supported desktop browser. Restart the browser after changing the setting, then rejoin the lobby. If the problem affects another title, first test an updated supported browser and ask the host to verify that the game itself is running normally.

Start with the number of people who want to submit regular answers, not the total number watching. Then use this decision process:
- Count regular players. If the number exceeds the title’s maximum, it cannot meet your plan without assigning some people to the audience.
- Check audience support. Confirm that the exact game lists an audience and read what audience members do.
- Match the interaction style. A voting-focused audience works differently from a game in which viewers contribute answers or act as one team.
- Plan for remote timing. For a distributed group, look for extended timers and use a private room code.
- Check device needs. Verify browser minimums and any title-specific microphone or GPU requirements before game night.
This approach prevents the most common mismatch: buying or launching a game that supports eight regular players when the group expects ten people to answer every prompt.

The practical cost question is therefore mainly a host question: someone must purchase the game, while the rest of the group supplies compatible internet devices and a way to see the host screen.
Privacy, moderation, and accessibility considerations
Room-code privacy matters most when a session is streamed or advertised publicly. Share the code directly with invited players, use a password where the chosen title supports one, and hide the code again if you need to remove an unwanted entrant.

Accessibility also depends on the individual game. Remote groups should allow extra time for people using assistive technology or slower connections when the title offers extended timers.
