Worlds 2026 has a 19-team field, six participating leagues, a four-team Play-In that sends one survivor into a 16-team Swiss Stage, and a single-elimination knockout. Teams qualify mainly through their domestic leagues, with two additional places tied to the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI). In Swiss, a team advances at three match wins and is eliminated at three losses; it does not finish by being ranked in a conventional league table.
The key distinctions are easy to miss: Riot describes five major geographic regions but lists six Worlds leagues, Play-In entry is not the same as direct Swiss entry, and Round 1 draw restrictions are tighter than later Swiss rounds. This FAQ follows Riot’s 2026 allocation announcement, October 5 Worlds primer, season handbook and global policies.

Six leagues send teams to Worlds 2026, but Riot’s broader geographic description still uses five major regions. The Americas grouping contains two separately listed leagues—LCS and CBLOL—so it is inaccurate to call these six major geographic regions.
- LCK: Korea.
- LPL: China.
- LEC: EMEA.
- LCS: North America, listed separately within the Americas.
- LCP: Asia-Pacific.
- CBLOL: Brazil, also listed separately within the Americas.
In Riot’s October 5 primer, LCK and LPL are shown with four teams each, LEC, LCS and LCP with three each, and CBLOL with two. Those team-name and seed displays are a dated 2026 snapshot rather than a permanent league entitlement; domestic results and the special MSI allocations determine the final field.

How do teams qualify for Worlds?
Domestic league performance supplies the baseline places, while MSI creates two additional allocation routes. Riot’s March 22, 2026 announcement describes 19 total Worlds places as follows:
| Qualification route | Places | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| LCK | 3 | Earned through the LCK’s own 2026 qualification format. |
| LPL | 3 | Earned through the LPL’s own 2026 qualification format. |
| LEC | 3 | Earned through the LEC’s own 2026 qualification format. |
| LCS | 3 | Earned through the LCS’s own 2026 qualification format. |
| LCP | 3 | Earned through the LCP’s own 2026 qualification format. |
| CBLOL | 2 | Earned through CBLOL’s own 2026 qualification format. |
| MSI champion | 1 | The champion receives a Worlds place if it also qualifies for its home region’s playoffs. |
| MSI second-place region | 1 | That region receives one additional domestic seed under Riot’s allocation formula. |
The first six rows account for 17 baseline regional places. The two MSI-linked allocations bring the announced total to 19. The MSI champion therefore does not bypass every domestic requirement: Riot explicitly conditions that place on reaching its home region’s playoffs. Each league determines its own domestic route, so there is no single all-region points table or universal standings tiebreak to apply across LCK, LPL, LEC, LCS, LCP and CBLOL.
What does “qualified” mean for an MSI place?
The MSI rule is an allocation rule, not a blanket invitation detached from domestic competition. A team that wins MSI still has to satisfy the home-region playoff condition stated in Riot’s handbook and announcement. The second-place MSI region receives an extra domestic seed, but its league decides which team earns that seed through the league’s current format.
Who has to play in Play-Ins?
Four teams enter a best-of-five (Bo5) double-elimination Play-In bracket, and only one advances to Swiss. Riot’s primer names KC, C9, MVK and the CBLOL second seed. The primer leaves the CBLOL seed as a placeholder in the Play-In sentence even though it lists LOS and FURIA elsewhere as CBLOL qualifiers, so the placeholder should not be converted into a confirmed team name without an updated official announcement.
What does double elimination mean here?
Double elimination means a team is not removed by its first series loss; the published bracket gives a losing team another route before the final Play-In berth is decided. Riot has confirmed the Bo5 format and the one-team advancement outcome, but this FAQ does not infer an unannounced game-by-game bracket, side-selection procedure or rematch order.
The Play-In survivor joins 15 teams that enter Swiss directly. That is why the overall Worlds field has 19 teams while the Swiss Stage has 16: three teams are eliminated in Play-In, and one proceeds.

How does the Worlds Swiss draw work?
Swiss begins with 16 teams and can last up to five rounds for an individual team. A team advances as soon as it reaches three match wins, and it is eliminated as soon as it reaches three match losses. Eight teams therefore qualify for the knockout; there is no need to rank all 16 teams in a final table.
What happens in Round 1?
Riot divides the field into draw tiers. In the opening round, tier 1 teams face tier 4 teams and tier 2 teams face tier 3 teams. Same-region pairings are prohibited in this first round, so the opening draw has both a tier rule and a regional restriction.
What changes after Round 1?
From Round 2 onward, teams are drawn against opponents with the same record, such as 1-0 against 1-0 or 0-1 against 0-1. Swiss rematches are prohibited, while same-region matches become permissible. Riot’s primer states: “Teams will not be re-matched against a repeat opponent during the Swiss Stage, but same-region matchups are permitted starting with Round 2.”
The equal-record draw is a pairing method, not a domestic-league standings tiebreak. The practical objective remains the same after every round: reach three wins before reaching three losses.
Can teams from the same region play each other?
Not in Round 1, but yes from Round 2 if the draw’s record and rematch restrictions allow it. A team’s region therefore affects the opening pairing pool only; it does not provide permanent protection through Swiss.
For example, two LCK teams cannot meet in the first round, but they can be paired later if they share a record and have not already played each other. This rule is separate from how LCK decides its own Worlds qualifiers before the event begins.

What happens at 2-2 in Swiss?
A 2-2 team plays one decisive next match in the sense that the result determines which threshold it reaches: a win produces a 3-2 record and advancement, while a loss produces a 2-3 record and elimination. The 2-2 label does not trigger a separate league-table calculation or an automatic tiebreak series.
The opponent must still come from the equal-record draw, subject to the no-rematch rule and the restrictions applicable to that round. Riot’s published format does not establish a special 2-2 bracket outside the ordinary Swiss process.

Are there Worlds tiebreaker matches?
For Swiss progression, the useful answer is no conventional standings tiebreak is used: three wins advance and three losses eliminate. A team does not need to finish above another team on a points differential or a regional-style table.
Domestic qualification is different. If two teams are tied in an LCK, LPL, LEC, LCS, LCP or CBLOL qualification table, consult that league’s current rules; Riot has not published one universal sequence that governs all six leagues. The exact event-specific handling of an exceptional procedural tie at Worlds also has not been established in the published format materials, so a prior year’s rule should not be assumed.
Are Worlds games Bo1, Bo3 or Bo5?
Riot labels Play-In series as Bo5, Swiss matches as Bo1/Bo3, and knockout series as Bo5. The consulted 2026 primer does not specify which individual Swiss rounds use Bo1 versus Bo3, so assigning a particular round length would go beyond the published information.
- Play-In: Bo5 double-elimination series.
- Swiss: Riot identifies Bo1/Bo3 formats, with the exact round-by-round assignment to be taken from the event ruleset.
- Knockout: Bo5 single-elimination series.
Do not confuse a series label with the Swiss advancement threshold. “Three wins” means three Swiss match wins under the tournament format; it does not mean winning three games inside one Bo3 or Bo5 series.

How are quarterfinal opponents picked?
After Swiss, the quarterfinal draw pairs both teams that finished 3-0 with two of the teams that finished 3-2. The remaining four Swiss qualifiers are drawn into the other two quarterfinal matches. The eight-team knockout is single elimination, so one series loss ends a team’s Worlds run.
This draw is separate from Swiss pairing. Swiss uses current records, tier restrictions only in Round 1, and no rematches; the quarterfinal draw uses the completed Swiss records to place the eight survivors into the knockout bracket.
What Worlds rules are still event-specific?
Riot’s global policies allow an event’s own rules to add requirements, and the Worlds primer points readers to a separate official ruleset. The published 2026 format materials do not verify the details of side selection, champion bans or draft restrictions, pause and remake procedures, or player-eligibility edge cases.
Those details should be taken from the final Worlds event rules rather than inferred from a previous tournament. If a live ruling or schedule update changes a procedure, the event-specific text is the controlling source.
When and where is Worlds 2026?
Riot’s announced schedule places the stages in three date windows:
| Stage | Dates | Venue location |
|---|---|---|
| Play-In | October 15–18, 2026 | Los Angeles |
| Swiss Stage | October 23–31, 2026 | Allen, Texas |
| Knockout Stage | November 3–14, 2026 | Allen, Texas and Brooklyn |
| Final | November 14, 2026 | Brooklyn |
These are announced event dates and locations, not predictions or verified match outcomes. Venue entry requirements can differ between Allen and Brooklyn, so attendees should check the current guidance for the specific arena.

What should you check before relying on a Worlds qualification explanation?
- Confirm whether a statement describes one of the six participating leagues or Riot’s five-region geographic grouping.
- Separate a baseline domestic seed from an MSI-derived place.
- Check whether a team enters Play-In or goes directly to Swiss.
- Apply the three-win/three-loss Swiss thresholds instead of inventing a final standings table.
- Use the Round 1 tier and same-region restrictions only for the opening draw; later rounds use equal records, no rematches and permit same-region pairings.
- Use the final event ruleset for draft, side selection, pauses, remakes and eligibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does winning MSI guarantee a team can skip its domestic playoffs?
No. Riot’s 2026 allocation conditions the MSI champion’s Worlds place on qualifying for its home region’s playoffs. The MSI victory creates the allocation, but it does not erase that domestic requirement.
Why does the Worlds primer leave the CBLOL Play-In seed unnamed?
The primer uses a placeholder for that seed in its Play-In description while listing CBLOL qualifiers elsewhere. Until Riot replaces the placeholder with a confirmed designation, the safest reading is simply “CBLOL second seed.”
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can a team with a better overall game record still be eliminated in Swiss?
Yes, because Swiss advancement is triggered by match wins and losses, not by comparing total game differentials across the field. A team that reaches three losses exits even if another eliminated team has a different game-level record.
Where will the final instructions for pauses and remakes appear?
They belong in the official Worlds event rules that supplement Riot’s global policies. The primer points to that separate ruleset, so readers should use its published version rather than carry over procedures from an earlier Worlds.
Are the six league labels permanent for future Worlds?
No. The six-league list describes the 2026 event structure. Riot’s regional groupings, league names and allocation formulas can change in later seasons, so a future Worlds FAQ needs that year’s announcement.
