Recent estimates range from about seven hours a week among UK gamers aged 16–64 to about 15 hours among weekly gamers aged 18–35 surveyed in the United States, Brazil and Japan. Those figures describe different groups and cannot be treated as competing estimates of one worldwide average.
How many hours a week do people spend gaming?
The answer depends on who is counted and what counts as gaming. These recent figures offer useful reference points, but each measures a distinct population:
| Estimate | Who and what it measures | Source |
|---|---|---|
| About 15 hours per week | Average among 1,678 weekly gamers aged 18–35 surveyed in the United States, Brazil and Japan in 2024; the question asked about video games on any device. | ASHA, WHO and University of Lucerne poll report |
| 6 hours 57 minutes per week | UK gamers aged 16–64, gaming online or offline, in Q2 2024. | Ofcom, Online Nation 2024 |
| 37 minutes per day | U.S. population aged 15 and over in 2025, for the broader combined category “playing games or using a computer” during leisure; this includes activities beyond video games. | U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, American Time Use Survey 2025 |
The 15-hour estimate is not a global average or an estimate for all ages: it covers weekly players in one age band across three countries. The UK figure covers a different age range and country. The BLS figure is broader still, combining games with leisure computer use. Comparing them as if they measured the same thing would be misleading.
What the surveys say about gaming time
Weekly gamers aged 18–35 in three countries
A 2024 poll commissioned by ASHA and conducted online by YouGov surveyed 1,678 weekly gamers aged 18–35: 506 in the United States, 524 in Brazil and 648 in Japan. The reported combined average was about 15 hours per week. Country averages were 17 hours in the United States, 15 in Brazil and 12 in Japan.

Participants were asked: “How many hours per week do you spend playing video games on any device? Please enter the total number of hours.” That wording makes the measure relatively direct, but its result applies to the sampled weekly gamers, not to non-players, all age groups or the world’s population.
Gamers in the United Kingdom

Within the reported age groups, people aged 25–34 averaged the most, at 7 hours 29 minutes; those aged 16–24 averaged 6 hours 22 minutes.

U.S. leisure time involving games or computers
The BLS’s 2025 American Time Use Survey found that people aged 15 and over spent an average of 37 minutes per day in the combined leisure category “playing games or using a computer,” up from 25 minutes in 2015. The category includes board games, video games, social media and other leisure computer activities. It is not a video-game-only measure and should not be read as the daily equivalent of a gamer-only survey average. People aged 15–19 spent 1.5 hours per day in that same broad category in 2025.

Why gaming-time averages differ
Before interpreting an average, check the population, activity definition and survey period. A figure for people who already play will usually answer a different question from a figure averaged across everyone, including non-players.
- Who was surveyed: The three-country poll covers weekly gamers aged 18–35; Ofcom covers UK gamers aged 16–64; BLS tracks the U.S. civilian population aged 15 and over.
- What counted as gaming: The poll asked about video games on any device. Ofcom counted gaming online or offline. BLS combined playing games with leisure computer use, including non-game activities.
- When the estimate applies: The poll and Ofcom figures describe 2024; the BLS annual time-use result describes 2025. These are dated estimates, not timeless measures.
- Whether non-players are included: Gamer-only averages describe players. They do not give the average across everyone in a country.
How many people play each week?
The Entertainment Software Association said in a June 3, 2026 release that 67% of Americans aged 5–90—an estimated 212.3 million people—played video games for at least one hour per week. This is a participation measure, not an average-hours figure: it indicates how many people meet a threshold, not how long a typical player spends gaming. ESA president and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis described games as playing “an integral role in American life today,” but that is his statement in the release, not an independently measured conclusion.

How to describe an average accurately
When quoting gaming time, give the number together with its geography, age range, population, activity definition and date. For example, “Ofcom estimated 6 hours 57 minutes a week among UK gamers aged 16–64 in Q2 2024” is more informative than “people game seven hours a week.” A survey of players, a population time-use average and a weekly participation rate are different kinds of evidence, so they should not be collapsed into one figure.
