Steam does not give Community Bans one standard duration. Most expire, but Steam says a ban can be extended or made permanent if prohibited activity continues or moderators consider it egregious. To find out how long a specific ban lasts, sign in to the affected account and check the red Steam alert banner.
How to check when your Steam Community Ban ends
- Sign in to the affected Steam account.
- Click the red Steam alert banner.
- Read the restriction type, reason and stated length. Steam identifies this alert as the place to find account-specific restriction information.
If you see the message “Your account has been blocked from participating in the Steam Community,” Steam says the cause may be a rules violation or an account lock. Examples it gives include inappropriate profile content, spamming, inappropriate language, harassment, repeatedly posting moderated content, and racist or otherwise bigoted content. The alert provides the restriction details. Steam Support: Your account has been blocked from participating in the Steam Community
Why Steam does not give a single duration
Steam’s general policy says most Community Bans expire, while extended or permanent bans may be issued if prohibited activity continues or moderators find it egregious. The policy does not publish a set number of hours, days or weeks, so an unofficial duration chart cannot establish how long your ban will last. Steam Support: Restricted Steam Account

Check which kind of restriction you have
Steam uses different restrictions for different activities. The scope and the support route depend on the category shown in your account notice.

| Restriction | What it affects | Duration or decision-maker |
|---|---|---|
| Community Ban | Participation in the Steam Community | Most expire; extended or permanent bans are possible. The account notice gives the specific length. |
| Community Profile Restriction | The specific type of profile content removed | Temporary, with duration escalating each time it is applied. |
| Harassment Ban | Community activity subject to a harassment restriction | Steam describes these as escalating. |
| Trade ban | Trading | Steam says most are permanent. |
| Game ban | A particular game | The game’s developer determines the duration and handles appeals; the ban does not prevent use of Steam itself. |
Steam describes these categories and their differences on its Restricted Steam Account page and its Game Ban FAQ.

Can you appeal a Steam Discussion ban?
For a ban in Steam Discussions, Steam offers a support form to request more information or appeal the decision. Steam cautions that an appeal will be denied if the account violated the applicable Community and Content Guidelines. This route is specific to Discussion bans, not a promise of an appeal process for every restriction. Steam Support: I have a question about a Steam Discussion ban
