Fortnite can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours to download. The real time depends on the file size shown on your device, your sustained internet speed, the platform, and whether the system still has to install, copy, verify, or unpack files afterward.
As a rough example, a 50 GB download takes about 67 minutes at a sustained 100 Mbps, 22 minutes at 300 Mbps, or 4 hours 27 minutes at 25 Mbps under ideal conditions. Real-world downloads usually take longer, especially over Wi-Fi or during a major seasonal update.

Internet providers normally advertise speeds in megabits per second (Mbps), while launchers and stores may show file sizes in gigabytes (GB). Eight bits equal one byte, so the conversion is not one-to-one. A 100 Mbps connection is theoretically downloading about 12.5 megabytes per second before normal overhead and performance losses.

How big is Fortnite?
There is no single current Fortnite download size that applies to every device. The size changes with updates, platform, installation method, and optional content.
A first-time installation can be much larger than a routine patch, while a small-looking update may still require extensive local file processing. On PC, Epic says installation choices such as High Resolution Textures, the Save the World Campaign, and streamed-asset options can change the download and installed size. Two PC players can therefore receive different update sizes even when they are using the same platform. See Epic’s explanation of Fortnite update-size differences.
Epic also documents a reduced PC installation of approximately 17 GB in the relevant Performance Mode guidance when high-resolution textures are removed. That is not Fortnite’s universal current size. Removing those textures saves storage and download time, but can reduce visual quality. How to calculate your own Fortnite download time
- Read the download size displayed by the Epic Games Launcher, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Google Play, or the relevant official store.
- Measure your actual sustained download speed rather than relying only on your internet plan’s advertised maximum.
- Use this estimate:
Time in minutes ≈ (GB × 8,000) ÷ Mbps ÷ 60
- Add extra time for speed fluctuations, installation, copying, verification, decompression, or unpacking.
For example:
50 GB at 100 Mbps
50 × 8,000 ÷ 100 ÷ 60 ≈ 67 minutes
That is an ideal network-transfer estimate. A practical estimate should generally allow roughly 20–50% extra time, with a larger buffer for unstable Wi-Fi, busy servers, slow storage, or consoles that must copy substantial game data.
Why Fortnite takes longer than the calculation
- Your actual speed is lower than the advertised speed: Wi-Fi distance, interference, router limits, and network congestion all reduce throughput.
- Other devices are using the connection: Streaming, cloud backups, other game downloads, and video calls compete with Fortnite.
- The launcher is downloading and installing at the same time: Network progress may pause while files are written or reorganized.
- The update is being copied or rebuilt: A console can continue processing files after the network download reaches 100%.
- The storage drive is slow: A hard disk can take longer to install, verify, or unpack files than an SSD.
- Optional content is included: High-resolution textures and other PC components increase the amount downloaded.
- Free storage is low: The system may slow down, fail, or repeatedly retry parts of the installation.
- The game or another application is running: Some systems reduce or pause downloads while software is active.
- Service demand is high: Seasonal launches and major updates can create unusually long waits. This does not prove that Epic is deliberately throttling an individual connection.
A displayed patch size also does not always equal the amount of work the device must perform. A 5 GB update can require significant local file changes, verification, or copying.
How to make Fortnite download faster
- Use Ethernet if a wired connection is practical.
- Pause other downloads, streams, and backups on your network.
- Improve Wi-Fi conditions: move closer to the router and use a less congested band when available.
- Restart the router if the connection is unstable.
- Close other games and bandwidth-heavy applications on the downloading device.
- Leave sufficient free storage for both the download and installation process.
- Install to an SSD where possible. This can reduce local installation and verification time, but it cannot increase the raw speed of your internet connection.
- Keep the device powered on and connected until the process is complete.
- Avoid repeatedly pausing and restarting the download.
- Check Epic’s public status page if downloads appear to be stalled for many players. Its service categories include game services and download/installation services: status.epicgames.com.
Changing DNS settings, using a VPN, or buying a faster broadband plan is not a guaranteed fix. Those options may help in specific circumstances, but first establish whether the bottleneck is your connection, Wi-Fi, storage, or Epic’s service.

You need an Epic Games account, enough free storage, a stable internet connection, and supported hardware. Epic’s current PC requirements list Windows 10/11 64-bit, 8 GB of RAM, and Intel HD 4000- or AMD Vega 8-class graphics as minimum examples. Recommended specifications include 16 GB of RAM, an NVMe SSD, and a GTX 960-, R9 280-, or equivalent DirectX 11-class GPU. Check Epic’s current requirements before installing.
Updating Fortnite on consoles and mobile
No platform is always fastest. Results depend on the local connection, storage, server conditions, free space, optional content, and whether the device is downloading or processing the update.

- Xbox: Open My Games & Apps, find Fortnite, and select the available update.

Start with these checks
- Confirm that the downloaded amount is still increasing; a rounded percentage may not visibly change for several minutes.
- Check the device’s actual network speed.
- Pause streaming, backups, and other downloads.
- Check available storage.
- Try Ethernet or move closer to the Wi-Fi router.
- Check Epic’s service status.
- Restart the launcher or console only when it is safe to resume the download.
PC-specific recovery
Open Fortnite’s installation options and remove optional content you do not need. Restart Epic Games Launcher and confirm that the installation drive is healthy and has free space.

Console cautions
Do not assume that a slow copying or installing phase means the internet connection is failing. The network download may be complete while the console continues rebuilding or checking local data. Avoid deleting Fortnite unless simpler recovery steps have failed.
When to contact support
Contact Epic or the platform manufacturer if the download repeatedly returns to zero, installation fails with a disk or corruption error, the device reports insufficient storage despite having enough available space, or other downloads work normally while Fortnite consistently fails. Support is also appropriate when Epic’s status page indicates an outage.
