You do not unlock every Dude through a known sequence of character-specific quests. In How Many Dudes?, recruiting a Dude for one run, discovering a Dude Type for Collections or the “I’m Every Dude” achievement, and filling out collection rewards are separate goals. Check the in-game Collections screen and the official Dudex to identify a missing type; the available evidence does not establish individual unlock requirements for every entry, especially the newer Sports family.
What does “unlock every Dude” mean?
It can mean three different things, and treating them as one system leads to bad advice. A Dude appearing in a run’s recruitment offers does not by itself prove that the type has been permanently unlocked, while earning collection rewards is not the same as discovering every type.

Neither source gives a complete per-character recipe for permanently unlocking every listed type.

Start runs, inspect the flyers and other choices offered at the Dude Ranch, and recruit from the pool that appears. When a type is not offered, try another run rather than assuming you missed a secret quest. Use Collections to see which entries your game has actually recorded, then use the official Dudex and the game’s clickable explanations to identify the type, family, ability, and related Relics.

If your objective is a complete collection, work toward Tiers 2 and 3. Butterscotch Shenanigans says higher-Tier Silver and Gold Stars for Relics and Trinkets can apply retroactively to lower Tiers, so completing every Tier 1 Star first is not required. If your objective is “I’m Every Dude,” track discovered Dude Types, not merely the characters you happened to recruit or defeat with.
How do I recruit Dudes during a run?
Recruit from the flyers and other choices presented at the Dude Ranch during a run. The recruitment pool can vary, so a type missing from one set of offers is not proof that you failed a permanent unlock.
- Start a run and review the recruitment options shown at the Dude Ranch.
- Read the available flyer or choice descriptions before selecting. The game can present several choices, but there is no documented promise that every named Dude will appear in one run.
- Choose from the Dudes actually offered. Recruiting one is a run-level decision; it is not evidence that a separate permanent character slot has been purchased or completed.
- If the type you want is absent, continue with the available choices or begin another run. The unofficial roster FAQ describes a variable recruitment pool for the original roster.
- Afterward, check Collections to determine whether the type has been recorded as discovered. That screen answers a different question from whether a particular flyer appeared.
Do not plan a run around seeing all 42 original types at once. The fan FAQ says those original types are available from the start of runs, but it is an unaffiliated reference framed around the original roster. It does not verify the current status of every entry in the official Dudex, particularly Sports entries added to that reference later.
How do I find a Dude Type I have not discovered?
Use the Collections screen to identify undiscovered entries, then use the official Dudex to look up a type’s name, family, ability, and associated Relics. These tools answer different questions: Collections shows what your game has recorded, while the Dudex serves as the developer’s reference for Dude Types and mechanics.
If a name is unfamiliar, open its clickable in-game explanation rather than guessing from the name alone. A label can refer to a standard Dude, a special appearance, or an item-related effect. The developer specifically points players toward clickable descriptions and the Dudex, but does not publish a precise menu path that applies to every build. Follow the labels visible in your own interface instead of relying on a made-up sequence of buttons.
For a clean tracking routine, compare the undiscovered entries in Collections with the Dudex family pages. Note the exact spelling and family, then look for that type in later Dude Ranch offers. Keep separate notes for a type you have never discovered and a type you have discovered but did not recruit in the current run. The first is a collection or achievement issue; the second is normal run-to-run variation.

What is the difference between the original roster count and the current Dudex?
The developer’s homepage describes the original game as having 42 unique Dudes across six Dude Families. That statement is useful historical context, but it should be labeled as the original-roster description. The currently accessible official Dudex also lists a Sports family, so “42 across six families” is not a safe, unqualified count of every type shown in the current reference.

The homepage also advertises more than 850,000 team compositions. That is a developer-stated combination figure, not a measurement of unlock rates, and it does not imply that every Dude is available in every recruitment pool.
Which Sports Dudes can I recruit?
The official Dudex currently names eight Sports entries: Basketball Dude, Broadcaster Dude, Coach Dude, Football Dude, Hockey Dude, Soccer Dude, Streaker Dude, and Tennis Dude. The names confirm that those entries exist in the reference. They do not, on their own, provide a character-by-character unlock table.
In particular, do not count all eight as confirmed ordinary recruits. The Sports family page identifies Streakers as a Relic that causes groups of Streaker Dudes to appear in battle. A Streaker spawned by that Relic is a summoned battle appearance, not evidence that Streaker Dude can be selected from a normal Dude Ranch flyer. The page does not establish the exact recruitment behavior of the other seven entries either.

Sports is also a rollout question. The accessible official pages do not establish whether every Steam, Android, and iOS build had the Sports content installed as of October 29, 2026, nor do they list prerequisites for individual Sports entries. If your Collections screen and Dudex disagree, verify that your platform has the relevant update before treating the discrepancy as a failed unlock.
Do I need to complete every Tier 1 Star first?
No. Butterscotch Shenanigans says, “To fill out your full collection in How Many Dudes, you’ll need to move up to Tier 2 and Tier 3 at some point.” The same guide explains that some early rewards arrive at higher Tiers and that higher-Tier Silver and Gold Stars for Relics and Trinkets can apply retroactively to lower Tiers.

That means you do not have to insist on finishing every Tier 1 Star before advancing. If collection completion is your goal, progress through Tiers 2 and 3 and then check which lower-Tier requirements have been credited by later Relic or Trinket Stars. A retroactive credit can fill a lower-Tier requirement without replaying the same task solely to preserve an order.
Stars and Dude discovery should still be tracked separately. A Relic Star can improve collection progress, but the guide does not say that earning it permanently unlocks the Dude associated with that Relic. Likewise, reaching Tier 3 does not supply a published recipe for an individual type. Tiers describe collection progression, not a hidden per-character quest chain.

What does “I’m Every Dude” require?
The published achievement condition is to discover every Dude Type. It does not say that you must win with every Dude, recruit each one in a single run, or defeat a particular boss for each character.
Use your Collections entries to track discoveries rather than counting how many different characters you have recruited in individual runs. If a run ends without a type, that does not necessarily remove a discovery already recorded; conversely, recruiting a type once is not a substitute for checking whether Collections has registered it.
The achievement guidance does not settle how the newly listed Sports entries affect the counter. Do not assume that the original 42-type figure, the current Dudex list, and the achievement requirement are identical after the Sports update. Check the achievement progress in the installed game and treat the in-game result as the practical test for your build.
What should I do if a Dude is still missing?
First determine whether the problem is a missing discovery, an absent recruitment offer, or a difference between the Dudex and your installed game. Those situations do not have the same explanation.

Can I play How Many Dudes? on a phone?
