Count every distinct portal structure or function, though, and the End also has an exit portal and End Gateways. Ruined portals are damaged Nether portals, not a separate destination type.
The two main portal families
| Portal | Role | How to identify it |
|---|---|---|
| Nether portal | Connects the Overworld and the Nether. | Ruined portals are incomplete remnants of this portal family, rather than a separate kind of destination portal. Minecraft describes ruined portal frames as obsidian structures that can appear partly buried in either the Overworld or the Nether (Minecraft). |
| End portal | Provides entry from the Overworld into the End. | Found in stronghold portal rooms; activate it by filling the frame with eyes of ender (Minecraft, December 2, 2021). |
Other End portal structures
If “types” means every portal structure or function, include two more End structures. They have distinct roles, but they are not additional main families for entering a different dimension.
- End exit portal: After the Ender Dragon is defeated, this portal returns the player to the Overworld.
- End Gateway: After the dragon is defeated, a gateway provides access to the End’s outer islands.
So the short answer is two main dimension-travel families; the broader list of distinct structures and functions also includes the End exit portal and End Gateway. A ruined portal remains a damaged Nether portal in either count.
End portal availability by edition
Minecraft’s December 2, 2021 article on End portal frames says every Java stronghold has an End portal, while only some Bedrock strongholds do. That is the edition-specific guidance in that article, not a guarantee about every later version. The same article reports that each End portal frame block has a 10% chance of generating with an eye of ender already in it, and that a world contains 128 strongholds in both versions. These are figures reported by Minecraft in 2021, not independent measurements.

Why ruined portals are not a separate portal type
Ruined portals can be found in the Overworld and Nether. Their damaged obsidian frames are remnants of Nether portals, rather than a distinct route to another destination. In Minecraft’s article on crying obsidian, Java Developer Brandon Pearce explained the design choice: “Initially, ruined portals were actually half destroyed and toppled over, but from an onboarding perspective I wanted to change it so they retained their shape to teach players what a portal looked like.” (Minecraft, quoting Brandon Pearce)
