MLB’s 2026 postseason has 12 teams: six from each league. Division champions are seeded ahead of Wild Cards, the top two division winners receive first-round byes, and the bracket does not reseed after the Wild Card Series. Here is how teams qualify, where each seed goes, and who hosts each round.
How many teams make the MLB playoffs?
Twelve teams qualify: six in the American League and six in the National League. Each league sends its three division champions and three Wild Card teams. MLB’s 2026 format FAQ, published September 1, 2026, describes the current structure.
How are MLB playoff teams seeded?
Seeds are assigned in two groups. The three division champions take seeds 1–3, ranked by regular-season record. The three Wild Cards take seeds 4–6, also ranked by record. That division-winner priority matters: a Wild Card team with a better record than a division champion still cannot move ahead of that champion in the seeding.
The No. 1 seed is the league’s division champion with the best record; No. 2 is the next-best division champion, and No. 3 is the third-best. The Wild Cards fill No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 in record order. Seeds 1 and 2 skip the Wild Card Series and advance directly to the Division Series.

What is the MLB playoff bracket?
Each league has its own bracket through the League Championship Series. The opening matchups and fixed path are:
| Round | Matchups or path | Format and hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Wild Card Series | No. 3 vs. No. 6; No. 4 vs. No. 5 | Best-of-three. The higher seed hosts every game. |
| Division Series | The 3/6 winner plays No. 2; the 4/5 winner plays No. 1 | Best-of-five. The higher seed has home-field advantage in a 2-2-1 format. |
| League Championship Series | The two Division Series winners in that league | Best-of-seven. The higher seed has home-field advantage. |
| World Series | American League champion vs. National League champion | Best-of-seven. Home field goes to the pennant winner with the better regular-season record. |
The full bracket remains fixed after the Wild Card round: MLB does not reseed teams based on who advances. So the winner of 3 vs. 6 goes to No. 2, while the winner of 4 vs. 5 goes to No. 1, regardless of the advancing teams’ seeds or records.

Who hosts playoff games?
In the Wild Card Series, the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds host their respective series in full, including a third game if needed. In the Division Series and League Championship Series, the higher seed has home-field advantage; Division Series games follow a 2-2-1 arrangement. World Series home field is a separate rule: it belongs to the league champion with the superior regular-season record, not automatically to whichever champion was its league’s No. 1 seed.
How does MLB break ties?
MLB no longer schedules a tiebreaker game, often called Game 163, to resolve ties affecting postseason qualification or seeding. Ties are decided by regular-season results and mathematical criteria, beginning with head-to-head record. The detailed order, including multi-team scenarios, is set out in MLB’s tiebreaker explainer published September 8, 2026.
