For a skater’s line, the key is to separate shots (pucks that tested or would have tested the goalie), hits (recorded body checks), plus-minus (goal differential during certain even-strength situations while the player is on the ice), and points (goals plus assists). These numbers describe different things; none alone measures a player’s overall performance.
Start with the game result and the player line
A typical box score pairs the final score with team totals and individual statistics. The final score tells you which team won. A skater’s row describes selected events and production credited to that player; it does not, by itself, explain the whole game.
Read the abbreviations in context. Common labels include S for shots, H or HIT for hits, +/- for plus-minus, G for goals, A for assists, and P or PTS for points. Site layouts vary, so check the column heading or its glossary if an abbreviation is unclear.
What shots mean
Shots on goal
In standard hockey statistics, a shot on goal is an attempt that scores or would have gone in if the goalie had not stopped it. A puck that misses the net or is blocked by a defending player is not counted as a conventional shot on goal. The NHL glossary describes the term in its Hockey Glossary.

A low shot total does not necessarily mean a player was uninvolved: the player may have passed, attempted a shot that was blocked, or missed the net. Conversely, a high total indicates repeated shots on goal, not necessarily goals or high-quality chances.
Shots on goal versus shot attempts
Shot attempts are broader than shots on goal. Alison Lukan, writing for the Seattle Kraken, explains that Corsi includes conventional shots on goal as well as missed and blocked attempts. The terms should not be used interchangeably: a box score’s “shots” column ordinarily refers to shots on goal unless it explicitly says attempts or names a broader metric.

What hits mean
Hits count recorded body checks under the statistic provider’s rules. They are a measure of physical contact, not scoring production. A hit total does not show whether a player controlled the puck, created a scoring chance, or helped the team win possession. Interpret it as one event count rather than a general rating of toughness or effectiveness.
What plus-minus means
Plus-minus records a player’s on-ice goal differential in qualifying situations. A player receives a plus when their team scores an eligible goal while they are on the ice, and a minus when the opponent scores an eligible goal while they are on the ice. Power-play goals are generally excluded from the traditional calculation; short-handed goals can count. League and provider rules determine the exact treatment, so consult the relevant glossary for a specific competition.

It is not a count of all goals scored by or against a player, nor does it establish that the player caused those goals. Teammates, opponents, deployment, and the sequence of play all affect the number. A positive or negative figure is best read as an on-ice goal-differential snapshot, not a standalone verdict on skill.
What points mean
In a skater’s individual statistics, points equal goals plus assists. A goal is credited to the scorer; assists are credited to teammates who contributed to the scoring play under the official scoring rules. For example, one goal and one assist produce two points. Points measure credited offensive production, not every useful contribution in the game.

How to read the numbers together
| Stat | What it counts | What it does not tell you by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Shots (S) | Shots on goal: attempts that score or would score without a goalie save | All shot attempts, chance quality, or goals scored |
| Hits (H / HIT) | Recorded body checks | Scoring contribution, possession impact, or overall effectiveness |
| Plus-minus (+/-) | Eligible goals for and against while the player is on the ice | All goals involving the player or individual responsibility for a goal |
| Points (P / PTS) | Goals plus assists credited to the player | Defensive work or contributions that do not earn a goal or assist |
Use the columns to answer separate questions: shots show whether attempts reached the net, hits show recorded contact, plus-minus shows qualifying on-ice goal differential, and points show credited scoring production. A player can have zero points but contribute in other ways, or earn points without recording many shots or hits. The box score offers evidence about a game, not a complete evaluation of the player.
