Traits and Some Magic changes Becastled from a game with one dependable build into a run-by-run strategy puzzle. The DLC adds more than 40 traits, and every few days—and after each Blood Moon—you choose one of three options. Because traits can impose serious restrictions alongside their bonuses, the strongest choice is not always the biggest number. You must judge whether your economy can support it, whether your army can survive its drawback, and which buildings, units or defenses need to change.
What do Traits and Some Magic add to Becastled?
The DLC introduces more than 40 traits in three rarity tiers: Common, Uncommon and Rare. Offers appear every few days and after a Blood Moon, with rarer traits more likely after that event. The system is designed to interrupt a strategy that previously worked on almost any map. Instead of repeating the same settlement and army plan, you adapt to the offer in front of you.

Traits are deliberately not a set of free upgrades. As designer Bogdan Pavlenko explains, “If every choice only provides a positive effect, then all three options are essentially correct.” A trait can therefore be powerful precisely because it closes off part of your normal plan.
How should you evaluate a trait before selecting it?
Read every offer as a change to your entire run, not as an isolated statistic. Use these five checks before committing:

- Power versus restriction: identify exactly what you gain and what becomes unavailable, weaker or riskier.
- Army compatibility: ask whether your existing units can exploit the bonus without an expensive rebuild.
- Timing: decide whether the benefit helps the next night or only pays off after expansion, research or a later siege.
- Positioning burden: determine whether the trait demands tighter formations, stronger walls or more careful targeting.
- Synergy potential: consider whether another trait, building or unit can multiply the effect.
A useful practical test is to answer three questions: Can the current economy pay for this? Can the army survive its restriction? What building, unit or defensive layout must change?
What does Master of the Bow do, and when is it worth taking?
Master of the Bow forces an archer-only army while significantly increasing archer damage. It is a commitment, not a routine damage upgrade: you give up a mixed frontline and must solve every threat with ranged units, terrain and defense.

The trait is strongest when your settlement can protect archers from direct contact and when the next battles do not require durable melee units to hold enemies in place. Plan walls, firing lanes and fallback positions before selecting it. If your current economy is already invested in swordsmen or another frontline, the conversion cost can outweigh the damage bonus.
How does Manifest Destiny change expansion and mood?
Manifest Destiny reduces mood but lets you acquire several upcoming zones for free. Its value is economic and territorial rather than immediate combat power: you trade morale for faster access to land, resources and future building space.

Choose it when early expansion will unlock a meaningful production or defensive advantage and you can absorb the mood penalty. It is weaker when your settlement is already close to a morale threshold that would disrupt productivity or when free zones do not solve an urgent resource problem. Treat the trait as an expansion plan that happens to have a combat-era cost.
What are the risks of Glass Cannon?
Glass Cannon lowers unit health while increasing damage. It rewards aggressive positioning, focus fire and decisive engagements, but punishes exposed units and small tactical errors. A force that survives by trading hits becomes much less reliable under this trait.

Before taking it, make sure your walls, retreat routes and target-priority habits can keep fragile units out of danger. The trait becomes more attractive when paired with effects that increase damage further or let you end encounters quickly; it becomes dangerous when your map or enemy composition makes prolonged contact unavoidable.
Can traits combine into a specialized build?
Yes. The developer cites Glass Cannon + Blood Money + Master of the Bow as an example of a high-damage archer build. The combination illustrates how traits can multiply a focused plan rather than merely add separate bonuses. Other runs may produce extremely powerful archers without walls, or units with enough health to become unusually difficult to kill.

These combinations are not automatic “best” builds. Their strength depends on rarity, timing and whether the rest of the run supplies the economy and positioning they require. A synergy is valuable only if you can survive the period before all pieces are online.
Are Mages and Clerics worth building?
Both new units come from the Mage School, and both are fragile specialists. Their usefulness depends on protection and formation rather than simply adding more bodies to the roster.

Mages deal area damage that can strike groups of enemies, giving them high impact against clustered threats. Their low durability means they should operate behind walls or other units. Keep them far enough from the front to cast safely, while preserving clear lines of attack so their area damage reaches the intended group.
How do Clerics support an army?
Clerics heal instead of dealing damage. The developer highlights their synergy with Swordsmen, whose frontline durability gives healing time to matter. Enemy archers can kill exposed Clerics quickly, so place them behind the units they support and use walls or terrain to block ranged fire. A Cleric investment without a protection plan is usually an expensive liability.

Does the DLC force a different army every run?
It does not guarantee a completely different roster, but it makes repeating one universal army much less reliable. A trait may reinforce your existing plan, demand a risky specialization or make a familiar composition impossible. The intended loop is to respond to what appears rather than assume the same build will work on every level.
That flexibility also changes when you spend resources. Delay irreversible commitments when a trait offer is imminent, keep enough economy to pivot, and inspect your defensive layout after every restriction that changes unit durability or range.
How was the trait system balanced?
Pingle Studio says it used internal playtests and Google Sheets formulas to examine both individual values and interactions among traits. The system was built so designers could add traits without requiring a programmer for each one. The team also experimented with an unlimited pre-run modifier system that could remove mechanics such as mood or the unit limit, but that feature was not completed and is not part of Traits and Some Magic.

Becastled is a single-player strategy game combining daytime city building with nighttime tower-defense battles against Moon Beasts. Steam lists the base game’s release date as October 22, 2025. Xbox Wire reported the Traits and Some Magic DLC as available on October 22, 2026. Store prices and review totals change: an Xbox listing displayed $24.99 when checked, while Steam showed 3,003 English reviews with 82% positive in a 2026 snapshot. Neither figure predicts your own results, and no public win-rate or independent balance dataset has been published.

You receive a three-option trait offer every few days and again after a Blood Moon. Blood Moon offers have a higher likelihood of including Uncommon or Rare traits.
Can I undo a trait choice after selecting it?
The available information describes traits as run-time decisions but does not establish an undo or respec function. Treat each selection as permanent for that run and save your resources for the consequences.
