You need 16 ancient debris to make the four netherite ingots required to upgrade a full set of diamond armor: helmet, chestplate, leggings, and boots. You also need a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template, which is separate from the debris total.
How the 16 ancient debris are calculated
- Four armor pieces need four ingots. Each diamond armor piece takes one netherite ingot to upgrade, so a helmet, chestplate, leggings, and boots require four ingots total. Minecraft Wiki’s advancement guide describes the full armor set and its four-ingot requirement.
- Each ingot takes four ancient debris. Smelt ancient debris into netherite scraps, then combine four scraps to make one netherite ingot. The conversion is described on Minecraft Wiki’s ancient debris page.
- Multiply four ingots by four debris each. The result is 16 ancient debris.
This is the recipe calculation for armor only; it assumes you already have the four diamond armor pieces to upgrade.
What the full set includes
Here, “full set” means the four standard armor slots:
- Helmet
- Chestplate
- Leggings
- Boots
A sword, pickaxe, or other diamond item is not part of that armor total. Each additional diamond item you upgrade takes one more netherite ingot, or four more ancient debris.

Do you need anything besides ancient debris?
Yes. The upgrade also requires a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template. It is an additional ingredient, not part of the 16-debris calculation. Minecraft’s Java Edition 1.19.4 release notes state that netherite equipment crafting now requires this template.
Version note
The template requirement is documented in the official Java Edition 1.19.4 release notes, while the debris total follows the cited recipe conversion. Recipes can change between Minecraft versions, so check the in-game recipe if you are playing a later update.
