World of Warcraft costs nothing through level 20. After the free trial, you need either a recurring subscription or prepaid game time to continue progressing. In the United States, Blizzard’s published reference chart lists plans from one month through one year, while the current Midnight expansion is a separate purchase. Your final charge depends on billing country, taxes, promotions, and the price shown at checkout.
What the free trial includes
The Free Trial lets you play World of Warcraft through level 20 without paying. That includes quests and dungeons available at level 20, so you can experience the basic combat loop, explore the starting areas, and run the level-20 dungeon content before committing to a purchase.

Level 20 is the trial’s practical limit. Once a character reaches it, continuing into higher-level progression requires a subscription or game time. The trial is therefore a genuine way to evaluate the game, not a short timed demo, but it does not provide the complete leveling experience or the full social and endgame systems.

Blizzard’s U.S. payment-options chart, published in 2024, gives these recurring-subscription reference prices. They are useful for comparing plans, but they are not a guarantee of the total displayed by your account today. Taxes, fees, regional pricing, promotions, and later price changes can alter checkout.

| Payment option | U.S. reference price | Effective monthly cost | How it bills |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-month recurring subscription | $14.99 | $14.99 | Renews every month until canceled |
| Three-month recurring subscription | $41.97 | $13.99 | Renews in three-month intervals |
| Six-month recurring subscription | $77.94 | $12.99 | Renews in six-month intervals |
| Twelve-month recurring subscription | $155.88 | $12.99 | Renews in twelve-month intervals |
| 60-day game-time block | $29.99 | Approximately $15.00 per 30 days | Prepaid time; check the product terms for redemption and renewal details |
The recurring plans reduce the monthly equivalent when you commit for three months or longer. The one-month option has the lowest upfront commitment, while a 60-day block lets you pay for a fixed period without selecting a recurring subscription. The figures above come from a Blizzard-hosted chart rather than a live checkout page, so treat them as U.S. reference points and verify the amount before placing an order.
What a subscription or game-time purchase unlocks
Upgrading the account removes the level-20 ceiling. Blizzard’s starter guidance says a subscription or game time opens playable content beyond level 20 and through level 80. That includes the higher-level leveling path, dungeons, raids, and systems that are restricted on the Free Trial.
- Progression for characters above level 20, through level 80 under the current included-content structure.
- Higher-level dungeons and raids.
- Guild access and the ability to participate fully in organized social play.
- Unrestricted in-game chat rather than the limits applied to trial accounts.
- Use of the Auction House.
- Modern World of Warcraft and older expansion content that Blizzard has folded into the subscription.
Game time and a recurring subscription provide the same basic entitlement to the included game. The difference is the payment arrangement: one renews automatically on its billing schedule, while prepaid time is consumed from the balance attached to your account.

Is the latest expansion included?
No. A subscription or game-time purchase covers the base game and expansions Blizzard has included in the standard service, but the newest expansion is sold separately. Blizzard identifies Midnight as the current expansion that requires an additional purchase.
That means there are two distinct costs:
| Purchase | What it gives you | When you need it |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription or game time | Play beyond level 20, through level 80, with included modern and older content and the associated social and endgame systems | Whenever you want to continue past the Free Trial |
| Midnight expansion | Access to the current expansion’s content | When you want to play the newest expansion rather than only the included game |
The previous expansion, The War Within, became part of the subscription on January 20, 2026. That change illustrates why an expansion that was once an extra purchase may later become included, while the newest release remains separate.
Blizzard has also announced World of Warcraft: Forever for November 4, 2026, with access included for players who have a World of Warcraft subscription or game time. Optional upgrade editions are sold separately. Because that launch date is still in the future relative to the prices in the 2024 chart, check the product page for the edition and any purchase requirement that applies when you buy.

Subscription versus prepaid game time
Choose a recurring subscription when you play continuously
A recurring plan is convenient if you expect to play every month. It keeps the account active without requiring a new code or manual purchase each time, and the longer options lower the effective monthly rate in Blizzard’s U.S. reference chart. The trade-off is automatic renewal: cancel before the next billing date if you do not want another term charged.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose game time when you want a fixed commitment
Prepaid game time suits players who return for a season, a raid tier, or a holiday break and want a defined amount of access. The 60-day reference product provides two months of access for one upfront payment. Confirm whether the specific item you are buying is a code, an account credit, or another delivery format, and check its regional restrictions before purchase.
Compare the total, not just the advertised monthly figure
- Upfront cash: one month or a short prepaid block requires less money immediately than a six- or twelve-month term.
- Effective monthly rate: divide the term price by its number of months to compare plans fairly.
- Renewal behavior: recurring plans charge again automatically; prepaid time is purchased in advance.
- Access level: neither payment type includes Midnight; both cover the subscription entitlement beyond level 20.
- Billing region: the amount in your Battle.net account can differ from the U.S. figures.
Why your price may differ from the U.S. chart
World of Warcraft pricing is regional rather than globally fixed. Blizzard has announced recurring-subscription changes for the United Kingdom, Kazakhstan, and Georgia effective June 22, 2026, and separate notices for Mexico, Chile, and Brazil. Currency conversion, local taxes, payment fees, promotions, and the plans offered in a particular country can all affect the final amount.

For that reason, do not convert the U.S. figures into your currency and assume the result is your price. The reliable number is the total shown after signing in to the Battle.net account that will receive the game time. If you move countries or use a different billing region, the available products and prices may change with the account’s region.
How to upgrade after reaching level 20
- Sign in to the Battle.net account connected to your World of Warcraft trial.
- Open the World of Warcraft product or account-management page and select the subscription or game-time option you want.
- Check the billing region, currency, term length, renewal wording, taxes, and any displayed fees before confirming.
- Complete payment, or redeem the game-time code if you purchased prepaid time through an authorized seller.
- Restart the game or return to the character-selection screen if the account does not update immediately. Account entitlements can take a short time to appear.
If the character is still treated as a trial account after payment, verify that you used the same Battle.net account, that the transaction succeeded, and that the game-time balance is attached to the correct region. Keep the receipt or redemption confirmation when contacting support.

Playing the included game beyond level 20
Budget one subscription term or a prepaid game-time purchase. You do not need to buy the newest expansion merely to continue leveling through the included game to level 80 and use the associated dungeons, raids, guilds, chat, and Auction House.
Playing the newest expansion
Budget both an active subscription or game-time balance and the separate Midnight purchase. The subscription keeps the account eligible to play; the expansion supplies access to the current expansion’s content.
Playing only occasionally
Compare a prepaid block with the shortest recurring term. A fixed block can prevent paying through months when you are not playing, while a recurring plan is simpler for uninterrupted monthly activity. Recheck the current regional price each time you return, because Blizzard can revise plans.

Common cost mistakes to avoid
- Assuming level 20 means the game ends: it is the Free Trial limit, not the maximum level for a paid account.
- Assuming the subscription includes the newest expansion: Midnight is separate under Blizzard’s current product structure.
- Using an old U.S. price as a live quote: the published chart is a 2024 reference and regional notices show that prices can change.
- Forgetting automatic renewal: record the next billing date for any recurring plan and cancel before renewal if necessary.
- Buying from the wrong region: verify that the code or account purchase matches your Battle.net billing region.
- Comparing term prices without dividing by months: a larger upfront charge can have a lower monthly equivalent, but only if you will use the entire term.
The practical answer
The Free Trial is free through level 20. To keep playing past that point, buy a World of Warcraft subscription or game time; Blizzard’s U.S. reference chart lists the one-, three-, six-, and twelve-month options above, plus a 60-day prepaid block. Those purchases unlock the included game through level 80 and its higher-level systems, but the current Midnight expansion costs extra. Because regional prices and taxes change, use the total shown for your Battle.net billing region as the final authority.
