The PS5 Pro comes with a nominal 2 TB of built-in SSD storage, and you can add more through its M.2 expansion slot. A compatible M.2 SSD can store and run PS5 games; a PS5 game on USB extended storage must be moved back to console or M.2 storage before you can play it.
How much storage does the PS5 Pro have?
Sony lists the PS5 Pro with 2 TB of built-in SSD storage. That is the advertised capacity, not a promise that all 2 TB will be available for games: Sony says some space is reserved for system software and other functions, so available capacity may vary. Sony’s PS5 Pro product listing gives the capacity and caveat.
Can you upgrade PS5 Pro storage?
Yes. The PS5 Pro has an internal expansion slot for a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD. It adds storage alongside the built-in drive rather than replacing it. Sony supports both single-sided and double-sided SSDs, but the drive and cooling still have to meet the measurements. Before buying, verify the manufacturer’s dimensions for the assembled drive, including any heatsink. Sony does not guarantee that every third-party SSD that appears to meet the specifications will work; no specific model should be treated as guaranteed compatible. M.2 SSD or USB storage: which should you choose?

What to know before installing an M.2 SSD
- Update the PS5 Pro system software before installing the drive.
- Use an SSD with effective heat dissipation and confirm the full drive-and-cooling assembly fits Sony’s limits.
- Follow Sony’s model-specific installation instructions. Discharge static electricity before handling the drive and make sure the covers are correctly installed before powering on the console.
- On first use, format the M.2 SSD when prompted. Formatting erases data already on that drive, so back up anything you need first.
Sony warns that a drive causing game problems may require moving the affected game back to the console’s built-in storage. Installation and third-party drive behavior are not guaranteed to be trouble-free.
