Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor most new buyers, the PS5 Slim is the more practical console: it occupies less shelf space, weighs substantially less, and lists a 1 TB SSD instead of the original disc PS5’s 825 GB. It is not a performance upgrade, however. The representative Slim and original models use the same listed Zen 2 CPU class, RDNA-based 10 TFLOPS graphics engine, and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory.
The important decision is the exact edition. A Slim disc console has a drive built in, while a Slim Digital Edition needs a separately sold compatible drive for physical games and disc playback. Compare the model number, included hardware, local price, warranty, and condition before choosing.

Quick verdict
- Buy the PS5 Slim when a smaller footprint, lower weight, or 1 TB of nominal storage matters and the total offer is competitive.
- Buy a disc configuration if you own physical PS5 or supported PS4 games, borrow and resell discs, or want supported movie-disc playback.
- Keep an original PS5 you already own if it works well for you. The cited specifications do not show a CPU or GPU performance-tier increase in the Slim.
- Check the edition and model number before paying. A Slim Digital Edition and a Slim disc model are different packages, and the optional drive is not an automatic part of every Slim bundle.
There is no universal winner based on speed. This is primarily a size, weight, storage, and disc-format decision.

Model revisions matter. The figures most often used for the original console come from PlayStation’s CFI-12XXA safety guide, representing an original disc PS5 model. The Slim figures come from the CFI-20XX safety guide and describe a Slim disc model. Those are representative model groups, not measurements that apply to every console sold under the original PS5 name.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
The original PS5 has had multiple CFI model groups. Sony also states that design and specifications can change. A listing that simply says “original PS5” may therefore describe a different revision from the CFI-12XXA example below. Read the model code on the console, box, or listing rather than assuming every large PS5 has identical dimensions or mass.

These are manufacturer specifications for the stated model groups. They should not be treated as a universal measurement for every original or Slim revision.
Size and weight: the Slim’s clearest advantage
How much smaller is it?
The representative Slim disc model measures approximately 358 × 80 × 216 mm, excluding projecting parts. The representative original disc model measures approximately 390 × 104 × 260 mm. That reduces the listed height, width, and depth, not merely one dimension. In a tight media cabinet, the depth reduction can be as useful as the shorter height.
Measure the actual shelf opening rather than relying only on the console dimensions. Leave room for ventilation, cable bends, and access to the power button and disc slot. The published dimensions exclude projecting parts, so a shelf that exactly matches one number is not a safe fit.
Handling and moving the console
The Slim is listed at approximately 2.6 kg, compared with approximately 3.9 kg for the representative original disc model. That difference is noticeable when moving the console between rooms, taking it to a different display, or lifting it into a high shelf. It does not change game performance, but it can change how easy the system is to install and live with.
Do not apply the 3.9 kg or 390 × 104 × 260 mm figures to every original PS5. Use the CFI code for a used console and verify the seller’s exact revision when dimensions or transport weight are important.
Performance: a refresh, not a faster PS5
CPU, GPU, and memory listed by PlayStation
Both cited guides list an AMD Zen 2 processor with 8 cores and 16 threads, an AMD Radeon RDNA-based graphics engine rated at 10 TFLOPS, and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory. On the evidence of those specifications, the Slim does not provide a newer CPU tier, a larger memory pool, or a higher listed graphics figure.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →That means you should not buy the Slim expecting higher frame rates, a higher maximum resolution, or better visual settings solely because the shell is newer. A game that offers a performance mode or quality mode on the original PS5 is not transformed into a faster mode simply by moving to the Slim.
Do not confuse the Slim with a performance model
The Slim designation describes a smaller hardware revision. It should not be used as shorthand for a more powerful PlayStation model. The comparison here is between the cited original and Slim specifications, not between either console and a separate performance-focused product.
Real game performance also depends on the title, its patch, display settings, and whether a developer offers different graphics modes. The matching headline specifications provide no basis for promising a universal frame-rate or image-quality advantage for the Slim.
Rank #2
Storage: 1 TB versus 825 GB
Nominal capacity
The CFI-20XX Slim guide lists a 1 TB custom SSD. The cited CFI-12XXA original guide lists an 825 GB custom SSD. The Slim therefore starts with more nominal internal capacity, which can delay the need to delete games when a library contains several large installations.
Neither number represents the free space shown to the user. The operating system and required system data reserve part of the drive, so usable capacity is lower than the figure printed in the specification. The exact free-space figure can vary with system software and installed data.
How to use the storage difference in a buying decision
Storage matters most if you download large games, keep several titles installed for quick access, or want to avoid buying expansion storage immediately. It matters less if you regularly uninstall finished games, use discs but still install games to the SSD, or already plan to add an M.2 drive.
Do not describe 1 TB as “1 TB free.” Compare the listed capacities first, then check the console’s reported available space after setup if you are buying used.
Disc editions and the detachable drive
Built-in drive versus Slim Digital Edition
The representative original and Slim disc models include an optical drive in the console package. A Slim Digital Edition is a different configuration. If you want to use physical games or supported movie discs with that digital console, you need the separately sold compatible detachable drive.
When comparing listings, identify one of these three situations:
- A disc console with the drive already installed and included in the price.
- A Slim Digital Edition sold without a drive.
- A Slim Digital Edition bundled with a detachable drive, where the seller clearly states that the drive is present.
These packages should not be compared on console price alone. Add the cost of the compatible drive when a digital listing does not include one, then compare the resulting total with a disc model.
Which Slim models accept the detachable drive?
PlayStation’s compatibility information identifies the detachable drive for Slim Digital Edition CFI-2000 model groups and also identifies current CFI-2100 model groups in its product information. The support setup page should govern compatibility for the exact console you are buying. The drive is not presented as a universal accessory for every PlayStation 5 revision.
Check the CFI model code before ordering. A photograph of the console label or the full model number in the listing is more reliable than a generic title such as “PS5 digital.” Also verify the regional package and included parts, because a drive advertised for a Slim Digital Edition may not be included with the console itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPairing requires an internet connection
PlayStation states that an internet connection is needed to pair the detachable drive and console during setup. Plan to connect the console before attempting the pairing process. If a used drive or console cannot complete setup, first confirm that the console is a compatible Slim Digital Edition model, that the drive is seated correctly, and that the system has internet access.

What discs the drive supports
The detachable-drive manual lists support for PS5 Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, supported PS4 Blu-ray discs, Ultra HD Blu-ray, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE, DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and AVCHD media. It supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD formats within those compatibility notes.
“Disc drive” does not mean that every PlayStation disc generation works. The published compatibility notes should control your purchase; do not assume support for discs from older PlayStation generations that are not listed. If a physical PS4 game is important to you, check that title’s supported format and edition rather than relying only on the fact that it is a disc.
Expansion storage and accessories
M.2 SSD expansion
Both cited console guides list an M.2 SSD expansion connector. That gives either model an official path to more internal game storage, but the connector does not make every M.2 drive suitable. PlayStation’s current installation instructions and performance requirements should be checked before buying a drive.
No particular SSD model is established by the specifications compared here. Check the current required interface, physical size, heatsink clearance, and performance ratings in PlayStation’s installation guidance, then follow the console’s installation procedure. Treat a seller’s claim that an SSD is “PS5 compatible” as something to verify, not as a substitute for the current requirements.
Stands, covers, and other accessories
PlayStation lists console covers, extra storage, a removable drive, and a charging station among its accessories. Its product information says the vertical stand is compatible with CFI-1000 and Slim CFI-2000 model groups. Compatibility should be checked against the exact revision, especially when buying a stand or cover for a used console.
Do not assume that an accessory designed for the original chassis fits the Slim. The reduced dimensions and changed exterior panels are precisely why model-specific compatibility matters.

You are buying your first PS5
Start with the Slim if the current offer gives you the smaller chassis and 1 TB drive at a price you consider reasonable. Decide the disc question before comparing retailers: choose the Slim disc model if you need physical media, or price the Slim Digital Edition together with its compatible drive if you want the option later.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a digital-only buyer, the Slim’s lower mass and smaller footprint remain useful even though they do not affect game speed. For a buyer with a physical library, a built-in drive avoids a later compatibility check and a separate accessory purchase.
You already own an original PS5
Keep the original if it fits your space, has enough storage for your habits, and operates reliably. The cited CPU, GPU, memory, and storage-interface specifications do not establish a performance reason to replace it with a Slim.
An upgrade can still make sense when the original is too large for a new cabinet, too heavy to move, or nearing the limit of its internal storage. Those are convenience and capacity reasons, not frame-rate reasons. Before selling the original, compare the complete replacement cost, including any drive or storage accessory you would need.
Rank #4
You buy and sell physical games
Choose a disc configuration. A built-in drive is the simplest route, while the Slim Digital Edition requires the compatible detachable drive. Include the drive in your budget if the digital console is not bundled with it. Physical games still install to internal storage, so the disc option does not remove the need to manage SSD space.

You mostly download games
The Slim Digital Edition may be the cleanest fit if you do not need discs. Its nominal storage advantage over the cited original remains useful, but make the decision with the actual local offer in front of you. If you might later buy physical games or movies, calculate the console-plus-drive total now rather than assuming the optional drive will be inexpensive or available everywhere.
You are shopping used or for a replacement
Condition and included accessories can outweigh the chassis revision. Check the model code, storage report, controller and power cable, disc-drive status, warranty or return terms, and whether the listing includes a stand or other item you would otherwise need. Ask for a photo of the identification label when the seller’s description does not state the CFI group.
A practical buying checklist
- Identify the edition: confirm disc, digital, or digital-with-drive bundle.
- Record the model number: use the CFI code to validate dimensions, accessories, and drive compatibility.
- Check physical fit: compare the published dimensions with the shelf opening and leave ventilation and cable clearance.
- Compare storage: remember that 1 TB and 825 GB are nominal capacities, not free space.
- Price the complete setup: include a detachable drive, stand, extra storage, shipping, and any required accessory.
- Inspect condition: for used hardware, verify ports, disc reading, system startup, controller inclusion, and return coverage.
- Verify region and package contents: especially when importing a console or drive.
- Check current compatibility guidance: use PlayStation’s support information for the exact Slim model before ordering a drive or accessory.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming “Slim” means faster
The listed CPU, GPU, and memory specifications are the same in the representative guides. Choose the Slim for size, weight, storage, or a newer package—not for an automatic graphics upgrade.

Treating the original dimensions as universal
The 390 × 104 × 260 mm and 3.9 kg figures describe a representative CFI-12XXA disc model. Other original model groups may differ. Verify the CFI number when cabinet fit or shipping weight matters.
Buying an accessory by appearance
Stands, covers, and detachable drives are model-sensitive. Match the accessory’s stated CFI compatibility to the console’s model code before opening the package.
Counting all advertised storage as available
System software reserves space on both consoles. Use the console’s available-space figure for planning a game library, not the headline capacity alone.
Bottom line for the buying decision
The PS5 Slim is the sensible new purchase when its compact 358 × 80 × 216 mm design, approximately 2.6 kg mass, and 1 TB nominal SSD solve a real space, handling, or storage problem. The original PS5 remains fully rational to keep or buy at a good total offer when its larger chassis is acceptable, because the cited specifications do not show a meaningful performance tier above the Slim.
Choose the disc setup according to your library, verify the CFI model group, and compare the complete package rather than the console name on the box. That approach avoids paying for a drive you do not need—or discovering after purchase that a digital Slim cannot accept the accessory you expected.
