After completing the opening Byway tutorial and reaching the Abeyance Realm, you can invite friends, join or share a Realm, and work together while each player retains their own quest progress. For play between sessions, the key choice is hosting: a listen server ends when its host logs off, while a dedicated server can run separately.
When can you invite friends?
Party invitations unlock after the opening Byway tutorial, when you reach the introductory Abeyance Realm. Inflexion Games’ official multiplayer guidance from 2023 and 2024 describes parties of up to six players. The game’s Social and connection interfaces may change, so use the current in-game options rather than relying on an older menu path.

The launch-era official overview describes inviting friends to a party, then joining a friend’s Realm or inviting them into yours. An official announcement also explains that a host can share a Join Code through the Social tab; the joining player enters that code. The announcement explicitly covers cross-play between Steam and Epic players. Its listing shows “19 Feb” but does not establish the year. Sources reviewed do not verify cross-play with consoles or other storefronts. Read Nightingale’s official Steam announcements.
How do parties and shared Realms work?
A party is the group of players; a Realm is the world you play in together. The official launch overview says Realms are private by default. Its launch-era guidance describes a public option for later Realms, selected at the Realm Card portal machine, that makes other players visible and lets them interact with structures. Menu labels and availability may have changed since those guides were published.

Make a shared home
Each player can have one active Respite Realm. To make the same Realm home for the group, every player places their Estate Cairn there. The official guide says players can return to that shared Realm even when their friends are offline. That shared-home arrangement is distinct from a listen-server session: the Realm’s availability depends on how it is hosted, not simply on whether everyone is online together.
Use Join Codes for Steam and Epic
The official Join Code announcement says the host selects Join Code from the connection options and shares it from the Social tab. The other player enters the code to connect. The game attempts the best available connection and may use Steam Datagram Relay if a direct connection is not possible. This is the officially documented Steam–Epic cross-play support; broader platform compatibility is not established by the sources cited here.

What carries over when you play together?
Quests and progress
Quest progress is tracked per player, so joining a friend does not automatically synchronize everyone’s quest state. The official multiplayer overview says players can generally help one another even when their individual progress differs. During an Apex encounter, participating players can receive the same encounter-completion rewards.
Loot and rewards
Encounter-reward chests are instanced per player, so each participant gets an individual chest. Other items can be shared by dropping them for party members.

Combat rules
Inflexion’s launch-era guide said there was no PvP or friendly fire at launch. Treat that as a statement about the launch version, not a guarantee for every later mode or update. The same dated guidance discussed level restrictions; it should not be treated as confirmation of current balance rules.
Which hosting option should you choose?

Choose a listen server if you want a straightforward session and everyone can play while the host is present. Choose a dedicated server if the group wants a world that can remain available between the host’s play sessions and is prepared to handle server setup or rental. Inflexion’s July 2025 announcement said the studio was moving away from its own hosted infrastructure toward distributed server infrastructure while preserving play with friends through dedicated servers. That announcement does not establish the current status of any legacy online character or Realm service.

The official multiplayer guide describes in-game voice chat for parties, so a microphone can be useful but is not required by the multiplayer rules. Once your group has reached the Abeyance Realm, use the current Social or connection options to invite players or share a Join Code, then decide whether you want a host-dependent session or a separately running server.
