The PS5 Pro launched in the U.S. on November 7, 2024, with a launch MSRP of $699.99. That was $200 more than the disc-drive PS5’s 2020 launch price and $300 more than the PS5 Digital Edition’s. The comparisons below use nominal U.S. launch prices: they are not adjusted for inflation, and the Pro’s launch price is not its current price.
PS5 Pro launch price vs. PS5: the closest comparison
The most direct benchmark is the original PS5 lineup. Sony announced the Pro at $699.99, compared with $499.99 for the disc-drive PS5 and $399.99 for the PS5 Digital Edition, both launched in North America in 2020.

At launch, the Pro cost $200 more than the disc-drive PS5 and $300 more than the Digital Edition. The Pro did not include a disc drive; Sony said the PS5 Disc Drive was available separately, so a buyer who wanted physical games needed to account for an additional accessory cost. Sony’s announcement does not establish that accessory’s price here. Sony listed the Pro’s included 2TB SSD and DualSense controller in its September 10, 2024 announcement. The PS5 launch prices and configurations are in Sony’s PS5 FAQ.
How the PS5 Pro compared with earlier PlayStation launches
The Pro’s $699.99 launch MSRP was higher in nominal dollars than these selected earlier PlayStation launch prices. Older prices are useful historical reference points, but they do not show how the consoles compare in purchasing power across years.

| Console and launch configuration | Launch year | U.S. launch price |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 | 2013 | $399 |
| PS4 Pro | 2016 | $399 |
| PS3, 20GB model | 2006 | $499 |
| PS3, 60GB model | 2006 | $599 |
The two PS3 prices were separate launch tiers, not one price range for a single configuration. Sony announced the PS4’s $399 price in its 2013 price announcement, the PS4 Pro’s $399 suggested retail price in its 2016 announcement, and the PS3’s 20GB and 60GB launch tiers in its 2006 launch announcement.
How it compared with Xbox launch prices
For cross-brand context, the Xbox Series X launched at $499 and the Series S at $299 in 2020. These are different console tiers, just as the two PS5 models had different configurations; they should not be treated as like-for-like product comparisons.

No: $699.99 is the PS5 Pro’s 2024 U.S. launch MSRP, not a claim about its price today. The Associated Press reported on March 27, 2026, that Sony would raise the U.S. PS5 Pro price to $899.99 effective in April 2026. That is a dated report of a later price change, not a verified October 2026 retailer listing. See the Associated Press report for that change.
Quick Recap
What these launch prices do—and don’t—show
- They show nominal U.S. launch prices. The PS5 Pro’s $699.99 was $200 above the 2020 disc-drive PS5 and $300 above the Digital Edition.
- They preserve configuration differences. The Pro launched without a disc drive, while the disc-drive PS5 included one; PS3 and Xbox Series consoles also had distinct price tiers.
- They do not establish inflation-adjusted cost or value. No inflation calculation or consistent real-cost comparison is provided here, so older prices should not be ranked as if a dollar had the same purchasing power in every launch year.
