The age at which they can create a general account independently depends on where they live: Nintendo says verifiable parental consent is required for children under 13 in the United States and under 14 in Quebec. Those thresholds are regional examples, not a worldwide rule.
Which Nintendo Account can a child have?
Nintendo offers child accounts for users ages 0–17. A general Nintendo Account is intended for someone old enough under local rules not to be subject to verifiable parental-consent requirements and who has an email account. For the account types and their differences, see Nintendo’s explanation of general and child accounts.
A Nintendo Account is not the same thing as a user profile on a Nintendo Switch console. It is an account used for Nintendo online services and purchases; the rules here concern the Nintendo Account.
When is parental consent required?
Nintendo says the required consent age depends on the child’s location. Its published examples are under 13 in the United States and under 14 in Quebec. These examples do not establish the applicable threshold in every country or region; consult Nintendo Support for the child’s location and follow the consent instructions shown during setup. Nintendo’s privacy policy, last updated April 2026, uses the same U.S. and Quebec age thresholds in its child-protection framing.

United States
Nintendo says verifiable parental consent is required to create an account for a child under 13. Its support page describes a one-time $0.50 charge for the first verification of adult consent in the United States. Nintendo says it does not charge a fee for subsequent child accounts added through that parent’s account. This is a consent-verification step, not an account subscription or purchase allowance; check the amount and process displayed during setup because operational details can change. See Nintendo’s guidance on the verification prompt.
Quebec
Nintendo says parental consent is required for a child under 14 in Quebec. The same support guidance describes the one-time $0.50 first-verification charge for the United States and Quebec; it does not make that amount a universal charge for all regions.

How a parent or guardian sets up a child account
Where verifiable parental consent applies, the adult uses their Nintendo Account to create and associate the child’s account. Nintendo requires child accounts to belong to a family group. Its Nintendo Account FAQ says a family group can include up to eight Nintendo Account users.
- Check the age and consent guidance for the child’s region through Nintendo’s child-account guidance.
- Use the parent or guardian’s Nintendo Account to complete the consent process when Nintendo requires it, and create or associate the child account through that adult account.
- Add the child account to the family group and review its settings and purchase restrictions.
What changes with a child account?
Nintendo says the two account types function almost identically, but a child account has specific account and supervision differences. An account subject to verifiable parental consent is automatically supervised in the family group.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What parents can review or manage
Nintendo’s privacy policy says parents or guardians may review, modify, or delete a child’s information and withdraw consent. It also says they can see which third-party games and applications have permission to access the child’s Nintendo Account information and manage continuing access in profile settings. Family-group controls also let adults manage account settings and purchase restrictions.
How to decide whether to set one up
The rules answer whether a child can have an account, not what age is best for every family. For a child who needs Nintendo services requiring an account, use a child account when appropriate and follow the local consent process. Before setup, consider whether the child is ready to use those services and whether you want to manage account settings, purchases, and third-party access through the family group. Nintendo does not publish a study establishing a recommended age for children to have an account.
