PS5 3D audio is Sony’s Tempest 3D AudioTech spatial-audio system. The console processes a game’s audio and sends separate signals to your left and right ears, creating cues that can make sounds seem to come from particular directions or distances. You do not need a Sony PULSE headset: compatible stereo headphones connected by USB or to the DualSense controller’s 3.5 mm jack can use it.
Enable it at Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones), then choose one of five presets or create a personalized profile. The result is not identical in every game. Developers decide how extensively to implement 3D audio, so the strength and character of the effect vary by title.

What is PS5 3D audio?
PS5 3D audio is the console’s software-based spatial rendering system, called Tempest 3D AudioTech. Rather than treating every sound as if it came from a flat left-right stereo mix, the PS5 processes supported game audio to provide positional cues for each ear. Those cues can suggest that an arrow passed close by, that footsteps came from another room, or that an effect is above or behind your character.
These examples describe what the system can communicate, not a guarantee that every sound in every game will be authored or rendered that way. The game’s audio design and the developer’s implementation determine how much positioning you hear. A title may use 3D audio extensively for gameplay-critical sounds, use it mainly for ambience, or provide a subtler effect.

How does PS5 3D audio work with headphones?
The PS5 performs the spatial processing and delivers the result through ordinary two-channel headphones. Each ear receives its own signal, and the differences between those signals create the directional impression. Because the processing happens on the console, the headset does not need a special “3D” decoder to participate.
USB headsets
A compatible wired USB headset can connect directly to the PS5. Wireless models that use a USB transmitter or adapter are also generally treated as USB audio devices, but you should confirm the exact model’s PlayStation compatibility with its manufacturer.
Headphones through the DualSense controller
Analog headphones or a wired headset can plug into the DualSense controller’s 3.5 mm headset jack. The controller carries the processed game audio to the headset, so this is a practical way to try 3D audio without buying a new console accessory.
Bluetooth-only wireless headsets
Sony’s PS5 headset guidance says third-party Bluetooth-only wireless headsets are not supported as a direct console connection. A headset that advertises wireless operation may still work if it includes a compatible USB adapter, but Bluetooth pairing alone is not the same connection method. For an uncertain model, check the headset maker’s compatibility information before purchasing.
Do I need a PULSE headset for PS5 3D audio?
No. A Sony PULSE headset is optional, not a requirement. Sony’s compatibility guidance covers most USB and analog headsets, including a wired headset connected to the DualSense jack, provided the particular model works with PS5.

PULSE Elite wireless headsets and PULSE Explore wireless earbuds are Sony options that support the company’s PlayStation audio ecosystem, but the available information does not establish that either provides a universal quality advantage over every other compatible headset. Choose based on connection method, fit, microphone requirements and price rather than assuming the logo alone determines the spatial result.

Often, yes. The simplest test is to connect them through USB or the DualSense 3.5 mm jack and open the headphone 3D-audio settings. “Regular” stereo headphones can reproduce the left- and right-channel signals the PS5 uses for its spatial effect.

Compatibility and 3D-audio support are separate questions. A headset can produce ordinary game sound yet fail to connect correctly, and an otherwise compatible headset will not make a game’s mix more positional than the developer designed it to be.
How do I set up 3D audio on PS5 headphones?
Use the console’s headphone settings, then compare the available profiles at a comfortable listening level. Menu wording can change with system software, but Sony’s current path is as follows:
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Select Sound.
- Open 3D Audio (Headphones).
- Choose Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile if you want the console to tailor the profile to your listening position.
- Follow the prompts. You will hear sounds at different apparent positions and identify where they seem to come from.
- Save the result, then compare it with the five preset profiles. Apply whichever option sounds most natural to you.
The profile is a preference setting, not a pass-or-fail hearing test. Sony’s Kenichi Imai, deputy head of the SIE Software Engineering Group, explained on May 10, 2021: “Each person hears 3D audio differently, so these settings allow players to adjust sound to a level that’s closest to their ear level.” If a preset gives you clearer dialogue or more comfortable ambience, there is no technical obligation to use the personalized result.

Which PS5 games support 3D audio?
Many PS5 games use Tempest 3D AudioTech, but support is not a single all-or-nothing standard. Sony says the exact effect varies by game and that developer optimization provides the best experience. A current game page, patch note or support document is the safest way to confirm a particular title.
Sony’s October 6, 2020 launch announcement identified these examples:

This is a historical launch-era sample, not a complete current directory. It also does not mean every listed game uses the effect in the same way. Housemarque’s work on Returnal and Capcom’s work on Resident Evil Village, described in Sony developer material published May 10, 2021, illustrate that creative choices by each studio shape the final result.
Why does the effect sound different from one game to another?
Tempest supplies the PS5’s processing capability, while the game supplies the sounds, mix and positional information. One developer may emphasize height and distance for environmental cues; another may use positioning mainly for enemies, projectiles or weather. A title can therefore feel dramatically spacious, barely changed, or somewhere in between even when you use the same headset and profile.

Can PS5 3D audio work through TV speakers?
Yes. Current PlayStation support instructions describe a separate TV-speaker mode that measures the room with the microphone built into the wireless controller. This is different from creating a headphone profile because the console is compensating for speaker placement and the listening environment rather than the shape of your ears at the headset.
- Place the TV and seating as you normally use them.
- In Settings > Sound, select the TV-speaker 3D-audio option displayed by your console.
- Hold the DualSense controller as instructed so its built-in microphone can measure the room.
- Complete the measurement, then use the console’s comparison control to listen to stereo and 3D audio.
Run the measurement again if you move the television, change your usual seat or substantially alter the room. Sony’s 2020 launch announcement said TV virtual surround was not available at launch; that historical limitation has been superseded by the current support instructions documenting TV-speaker 3D audio.
What should I check when PS5 3D audio is not working?
No sound or the headset is not detected
- For a 3.5 mm headset, reseat the plug in the DualSense controller and check the console’s output device in the Sound settings.
- For USB equipment, reconnect the headset or adapter directly to the PS5 and verify the manufacturer’s PS5 compatibility statement.
- If the headset is an older PS4-licensed model, look for a required firmware update or a model-specific limitation.
The sound is ordinary stereo
- Confirm that 3D Audio (Headphones) is enabled rather than switched off.
- Try a preset and the personalized profile at the same listening level; a profile change can make the effect easier to notice.
- Test a game known to advertise 3D-audio features, while remembering that its implementation may still be subtle.
The effect sounds unnatural or tiring
Switch to another preset, recreate the personalized profile while sitting normally, or disable the feature for that session. The settings are intended to let each player choose a comfortable result, not to impose one objectively correct profile.
Should you buy a new headset for PS5 3D audio?
Buy one only if your current headphones are uncomfortable, incompatible, missing a microphone you need, or unsuitable for your preferred connection. For a replacement, compare these practical factors:
- Connection: 3.5 mm through DualSense, USB, or a wireless model with a compatible USB transmitter.
- Fit and comfort: ear-pad seal and wearing comfort affect how consistently you perceive positional cues.
- Microphone: choose the pickup quality and mute controls you need for party chat.
- Power and controls: wireless battery life, sidetone and on-headset volume controls may matter more than a “3D” label.
- Compatibility support: check the exact model, especially if it is Bluetooth-only or originally licensed for PS4.
A compatible stereo gaming headset is enough to try the feature. Sony’s PULSE Elite and PULSE Explore are optional named products, not prerequisites, and there is no published comparative statistic establishing a universal best headset or a guaranteed performance advantage for one model.

What are the limits of PS5 3D audio?
Tempest 3D AudioTech is a rendering system, not a promise that every game contains a fully authored three-dimensional sound field. The strongest results require three things to line up: a compatible connection, a profile that suits your hearing and fit, and a game whose developers made meaningful use of positional audio.
For that reason, evaluate the feature by listening in the games you actually play. Keep the profile that gives you the clearest, most comfortable image, and verify current title support rather than relying on a launch-era list. No official source cited here publishes a percentage improvement, ranking or cross-headset performance score.
