Gray Zone Warfare was described as having ammunition- and material-sensitive penetration, surface impacts, ricochets, and weapon-dependent recoil. Those are developer-described design features, not proof of independently verified real-world accuracy—and the system has since been rebalanced.
What does “realistic ballistics” mean in Gray Zone Warfare?
The phrase comes from Insider Gaming’s February 29, 2024 report on a MADFINGER Games combat development log. The report described a set of interacting combat effects rather than a published verdict that the game accurately reproduces real-world ballistics. Insider Gaming’s report
Penetration depends on ammunition and the material hit
According to that report, penetration varies with both ammunition type and the material struck. The description does not provide a complete ammunition-versus-material chart, penetration depths, or numerical formulas, so it does not establish how a particular round performs against a particular surface.
Impacts can leave temporary cavities
The reported system models temporary cavities in surfaces and objects, with an effect compared to bullet impacts in ballistic gel. That describes an in-game impact effect; it is not evidence that every impact is calculated or displayed according to a validated physical model.

Ricochets respond to the struck surface
The 2024 account says ricochets differ according to the material, distinguishing solid surfaces from permeable ones such as water and mud. It does not publish ricochet angles, probabilities, or controlled real-world comparisons.
Recoil responds to weapon state
Recoil was described as depending on weapon characteristics and how much ammunition remains in the magazine. The report does not specify the exact variables or quantify their effect.
How realistic are the ballistics?
The reported mechanics suggest an effort to make ammunition, surfaces, impacts, and weapon behavior matter in combat. But the available description does not establish measured projectile trajectories, a full ammunition performance database, or a test protocol comparing the game with real-world measurements. A convincing effect or detailed system is not, by itself, an independently verified simulation.
For a player, the practical takeaway is that these are intended gameplay systems, not a basis for assuming a specific real-world ballistic result will occur in the game. The sources do not provide enough numerical detail to predict every shot interaction.

Did the Spearhead update change ballistics?
Yes. MADFINGER Games’ Spearhead release, Update 0.4, went live on March 31, 2026, and its notes list “Rebalanced ballistics.” The studio said it aimed to improve combat readability and find “a better balance between realism and satisfying game feel.” MADFINGER Games’ Spearhead announcement and notes
That update matters when interpreting the older 2024 description: it records an intended design at that point, not a guarantee that every ballistic parameter has stayed fixed. Later official notes dated June 25 and July 20, 2026, document continued updates, including DLSS 4.5 support, but the cited patch summaries do not report another ballistic redesign. Gray Zone Warfare is an Early Access PC game on Steam. Steam store listing MADFINGER’s news archive, as crawled October 8, 2026, lists an Update 0.5 teaser dated October 4. The teaser described a future milestone moving from pre-alpha to alpha and introducing a new gameplay loop; it should not be mistaken for an already released update. MADFINGER Games news archive
