Steam and the Epic Games Store do not currently present the same AI-disclosure process. Steam has a published generative-AI section in its required Content Survey, separating player-consumed content generated before release from content generated during play. Epic’s public distribution requirements reviewed for this guide cover content, intellectual property, accuracy and review obligations, but do not describe a comparable AI-specific questionnaire. That does not prove the authenticated Epic Developer Portal never asks an AI question; developers must check the live submission flow. The practical rule is to disclose what AI produced for players, not every tool that helped your team work faster, while meeting ordinary copyright, content and marketing requirements on both stores.

What is the difference between Steam’s and Epic’s AI rules?
Steam publishes an explicit AI disclosure section in its Content Survey, while Epic’s publicly available distribution guidance examined here does not set out an equivalent AI-specific survey. Both stores still require truthful product information, acceptable content and sufficient rights to everything you ship or show.

The distinction is about documented process, not a blanket approval or ban. Steam’s wording tells developers which kinds of generated content to describe. Epic’s public rules leave AI provenance under its broader content, accuracy and intellectual-property obligations, with the exact authenticated portal workflow still needing confirmation.
Steam’s published questionnaire
Before Steam reviews a store page and build, the developer completes a Content Survey. Its generative-AI section asks about content created with AI that will be delivered to players. Steam’s labels are:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Pre-Generated: AI-created material made during development and shipped in the game or associated player-facing content. Steam’s examples include art, sound, narrative and localization.
- Live-Generated: AI output produced while the game runs, such as dialogue, images or other material generated in response to play.
Steam checks survey answers against the submitted game and store page. A disclosure therefore needs to match the actual build and the way the product is described to customers.
Epic’s public guidance
The Epic Games Store requirements reviewed for this comparison focus on product review, content standards, listing accuracy and rights. They do not describe a matching public AI questionnaire or use Steam’s Pre-Generated and Live-Generated terminology.

Do I have to disclose AI-generated art on Steam?
Yes, when AI-generated art ships in the game or another player-consumed part of the release, it falls within Steam’s description of Pre-Generated AI content. The survey is asking what the player receives, not merely whether an AI tool appeared somewhere in the production pipeline.
What to record before completing the survey
- Identify every shipped image, texture, model, animation, voice, sound effect, written passage and localization asset made with generative systems.
- Separate assets created from scratch by a model from assets that were only resized, compressed, cleaned or exported with conventional automation.
- Note where each asset appears: executable content, downloadable content, tutorials, menus, subtitles, soundtrack materials or store-page media.
- Keep the tool, model or service terms that granted (or failed to grant) permission for commercial use and redistribution.
Steam’s survey language names art, sound, narrative and localization as examples, so a team should not treat the question as limited to promotional illustrations. A generated translation in the shipped game is still player-consumed language content.
Disclosure does not cure rights problems
Answering the AI question is not permission to use infringing training outputs, copied characters, unauthorized voices or unlicensed music. Steam’s ordinary content and copyright requirements continue to apply, and the store page must describe the product accurately. If a generated asset creates uncertainty about ownership or consent, resolve that issue before submission rather than relying on the disclosure as a waiver.

Do AI coding assistants count as Steam AI content?
Not automatically. Steam says that efficiency gains from AI-powered workflow tools are not the focus of this section. If an assistant helped write code, refactor scripts, search documentation or generate internal tests, but the resulting player-facing material is ordinary game content your team owns and can ship, that use is different from shipping generated art, dialogue or localization.
When coding assistance stays a workflow matter
A coding assistant used to suggest a function, explain an error or speed up an internal build generally describes how the team worked, not what the player consumes. Steam’s published wording points developers toward the output delivered in the game, so do not classify every productivity tool as equivalent to generated content.
When coding assistance can create a disclosure issue
The distinction changes when the assistant’s output itself becomes player-facing or introduces generated material into the release. Examples include code that embeds generated dialogue, creates an in-game image generator, supplies a model and prompt system for runtime content, or copies a generated voice or text corpus into the shipped product. In those cases, document the actual content and behavior rather than describing the project only as “AI-assisted development.”
Keep an internal inventory that separates tools used for efficiency from outputs included in the build. That record makes the Steam survey easier to answer and helps the team respond if a reviewer asks why a store-page claim differs from a build feature.
What about AI-generated dialogue during gameplay?
Dialogue or other material generated while the game is running is Steam’s Live-Generated category. Steam requires a description of the safeguards used to prevent illegal output in addition to identifying the live-generation feature.
What a live-generation description should cover
- Where generation occurs: identify the game mode, character system or service that creates the output.
- What players can supply: explain whether prompts, voice input, uploaded files or free-form chat affect the result.
- Filtering and moderation: describe input and output filters, blocked terms, rate limits, reporting, human review and the response when a filter fails.
- Operational controls: state whether the feature can be disabled, whether parents or administrators have controls, and how abuse reports are handled.
- Service dependencies: identify any external service whose availability, billing or retention policy affects the feature.
The description is a guardrail explanation, not a promise that every output will be harmless. Ordinary rules on illegal, abusive, infringing or misleading content still apply. A feature that can generate prohibited material cannot be made acceptable merely by labeling it Live-Generated.

Adult-only sexual content is a specific boundary
Steam’s FAQ says it does not want to ship Live-Generated Adult Only Sexual Content during gameplay at this time. Do not present the ordinary live-AI disclosure process as blanket acceptance for that category. Treat the FAQ’s limitation as a separate product-design constraint when deciding whether to ship a runtime generation system.
Who pays for an external live-AI service?
Steam’s FAQ identifies supported ways to handle the costs of an external live-AI service. Payment arrangements are separate from the Content Survey: funding a service does not replace disclosure, and disclosing a feature does not determine who pays its usage charges. Confirm the current commercial and technical choices in Steamworks before launch.

The reviewed public Epic Games Store requirements do not specify a Steam-style AI disclosure survey. They do require accurate product information, acceptable content and rights to the material you publish or use. Because the exact authenticated portal fields were not established here, the safe answer is “not specified in the reviewed public requirements,” not “Epic never asks.”
How to apply Epic’s general rules to AI-made content
- Describe features and content accurately in the product page, including any player-facing generation that affects what buyers receive.
- Confirm that your team has the necessary rights to generated or model-assisted art, audio, writing, code, voices and data.
- Check that screenshots, trailers, capsule art and promotional copy do not imply content or functionality the build does not provide.
- Review the current Developer Portal for any additional declarations, content questions or update requirements before submitting.
Epic’s content guidance states that content created, published or used cannot infringe or violate another person’s rights, including intellectual-property rights. That obligation applies whether an asset came from a human artist, a model, a contractor or a mixture of sources.
How should developers handle AI used in a store listing?
AI material used in a store page, trailer, screenshot or other marketing asset is still player-facing information and must be accurate. Steam’s survey distinguishes generated content that ships and is consumed by players; the store page itself must also remain consistent with the submitted product. Epic’s public guidance likewise emphasizes listing accuracy and rights, without establishing a separate AI declaration in the documents reviewed.
Generated marketing images and trailers
Inventory AI-made key art, background images, trailer narration, music and promotional text separately from in-game assets. Verify that the marketing material does not depict a feature, character, setting or visual quality absent from the release. Retain permissions for model outputs and any reference material used to produce them.

AI-written descriptions and translations
Review generated copy for factual errors, unsupported claims and localization mistakes before publishing. A fluent sentence can still promise a multiplayer mode, platform feature or content category that the build does not contain. The responsible question for either storefront is whether the listing tells customers the truth and uses material your team is allowed to publish.
What should a developer submit for each common scenario?
The following decision table applies the published distinctions without assuming that Epic has a private AI form.
| Scenario | Steam | Epic Games Store | Developer action |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI-generated texture shipped in the game | Describe as applicable Pre-Generated content in the Content Survey. | No matching AI-specific field is described in the reviewed public requirements. | Verify commercial rights, keep the asset inventory, and describe the product accurately. |
| AI coding assistant used only for workflow | Steam says efficiency gains are not the focus of this AI section. | Do not infer an AI declaration from the reviewed public requirements. | Check whether the tool produced any player-facing asset or runtime feature. |
| AI dialogue generated during play | Describe as Live-Generated and explain safeguards against illegal output. | Apply general content, accuracy and rights rules; portal fields remain to be checked. | Document prompts, filters, moderation, reporting and service dependencies. |
| AI image or copy used only in a store listing | Keep the listing consistent with the build and disclose applicable generated content in the survey. | Follow public accuracy and rights requirements; no parallel AI questionnaire is established. | Audit every claim, screenshot, trailer element and license before publication. |
How do you prepare the Steam Content Survey?
Prepare the evidence before opening the form. Steam checks answers against the store page and submitted build, so a last-minute estimate is more likely to omit a generated asset or misdescribe a runtime feature.
- Map player-facing outputs. List generated art, audio, text, voices, translations, videos and runtime responses that reach players.
- Classify each output. Mark development-time material as Pre-Generated and runtime material as Live-Generated. Keep workflow-only assistance in a separate category.
- Write the live-feature safeguards. For every runtime system, document input controls, output moderation, blocked content, reports, escalation and disablement options.
- Audit rights and provenance. Store licenses, permissions, vendor terms, source records and approvals for each shipped or advertised asset.
- Reconcile the store page. Ensure screenshots, trailers, descriptions and feature lists match the build and do not hide a material AI-driven behavior.
- Submit and retain answers. Save the completed responses and the build version they describe for your release records.
After build and store-page approval, Steam says changing certain Content Survey answers requires contacting Steam Support. Treat the survey as a release document rather than a form to revise casually after approval.
Can the same AI disclosure be copied to both stores?
You can maintain one internal fact sheet, but do not assume that one paragraph satisfies both storefronts. Steam asks for specific categories and, for Live-Generated content, a guardrails description. Epic’s reviewed public documents do not establish equivalent fields, so its current portal and general submission requirements determine what must be entered there.
A shared inventory is useful when it preserves store-specific wording: one section for Steam’s Pre-Generated and Live-Generated answers, another for Epic’s accuracy and rights checks, and a change log showing which build and listing each statement covers.

Can disclosure affect player reactions?
Disclosure is primarily a compliance and transparency task, not a guaranteed marketing outcome. An exploratory 2026 study collected 50,153 Steam reviews across 602 games and associated AI labels with more AI-related criticism in negative reviews, but the authors did not establish that disclosure caused criticism or reduced sales. The dataset is not a count of all Steam reviews or games, so it should not be treated as a store-wide performance forecast.
Developers can still use clear explanations to set expectations: identify where generated content appears, explain controls for runtime systems and avoid implying that a disclosure excuses low-quality or infringing material.

How we picked the comparison criteria
The comparison uses published developer-facing rules and separates explicit AI questionnaire language from general storefront obligations. It evaluates whether each store names development-time and runtime generation, asks for safeguards, addresses workflow-only tools, and explains what happens when a developer needs to update an answer. Where Epic’s public documents do not establish a field, the article says so rather than inferring the contents of its authenticated portal.
Bottom line for developers
For Steam, disclose player-consumed generative content in the Content Survey: classify shipped development-time material as Pre-Generated, classify runtime output as Live-Generated, and describe safeguards for the latter. Do not treat ordinary AI-assisted productivity as automatically covered, and do not mistake disclosure for permission to use infringing or prohibited material. For Epic, follow the published content, accuracy and rights rules and check the live Developer Portal for any current AI-related questions. The safest cross-store workflow is a detailed inventory of AI outputs, rights records, moderation controls and listing claims tied to the exact build you submit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does AI-generated localization need to be disclosed on Steam?
Steam names localization among the examples of Pre-Generated material when AI-created content ships and is consumed by players. Include generated translations in the same asset inventory as art, sound and narrative, then make sure the localized store pages accurately describe the release.
What if a runtime AI feature is optional or disabled by default?
Optional status does not change the fact that the feature generates content during play. Describe where it is available and document the controls, filtering and reporting that apply when a player enables it.
Can a post-launch patch change the AI answers I gave Steam?
Steam says certain Content Survey changes after build and store-page approval require contacting Steam Support. Keep the original answers and contact support before shipping a material change rather than silently altering the feature.
Is an AI disclosure the same as a copyright license?
No. A disclosure tells the storefront what generated content or behavior exists; it does not grant ownership, permission to use a likeness or a license to redistribute training-derived material. Rights must be established independently for every shipped or advertised asset.
