The format was dubbed “Egglikes” by a reporter, after the earlier game Egg—not by Valve as an official genre name. Coverage documented a surge of related games in 2024, but it does not establish that the trend is still widespread in 2026.
What is the Banana game on Steam?
Banana is a free-to-play Steam game whose central interaction is clicking an image of a banana. The sparse gameplay is only part of its appeal: players also pursued collectible drops associated with the game and Steam’s trading and Community Market features. The Steam store listing identifies the game; drop rules and market conditions can change, so historical descriptions should not be treated as current instructions.

Why did Banana attract so many players?
The combination of almost no gameplay friction and a collectible-item loop gave players a reason to open the game repeatedly. Some items could be listed or traded through Steam’s marketplace, but a listing price is not proof of a completed sale, and prices can fluctuate. These digital items are not dependable income and do not guarantee a return.
Player figures illustrate the scale of the past attention, but they are dated snapshots rather than a current count. PC Gamer reported that SteamDB showed an all-time peak of 31,124 players in its May 29, 2024 coverage. The Standard later reported a SteamDB peak of 884,469 concurrent players in June 2024. In January 2025, PC Gamer described the game as still drawing more than 100,000 concurrent players. These reports differ in date and framing, so the numbers should not be treated as a harmonized comparison or as unique-player totals. Concurrent players are the number active at the same time, not a count of everyone who has ever played or a verified count of human participants.

What are “Egglikes”?
PC Gamer traced Banana to Egg, an earlier clicker, and informally called games in this mold “Egglikes” or “egglikes.” The term is a reporter’s shorthand, not an official Steam category. The family resemblance is a minimal clicking experience paired with collectible drops and, in some cases, tradeable items.
In May 2024, PC Gamer described a drop schedule in which a player could collect a banana roughly every three hours after opening and playing for a minute, with a rarer pool on an 18-hour cadence after an hour of play. The article attributed that how-to wording to a Banana Discord bot; it is a historical account, not confirmation of today’s mechanics.

Which games followed the format?
Contemporary reporting named Cats and Banana & Cucumber among related clickers or copycats. Those examples show that developers tried similar concepts after Banana drew attention. The cited coverage does not establish how many such games existed overall, whether they remain active, or whether the trend is still growing.

What is the concern behind the trend?
The uneasy part is the incentive structure: a game with very little play can still encourage repeated check-ins because a collectible might have exchange value. That can make the experience feel more like waiting for a marketable drop than playing a conventional game. It is a reason to be cautious, not evidence by itself of a measured harm finding.

Reports also raised concerns about account abuse, but the available figures do not establish what share of players were bots or otherwise inauthentic. Player counts alone cannot answer that question. Nor should a volatile market listing be mistaken for a reliable earning opportunity.

What should players keep in mind?
- Check current rules in the game. Drop timing and eligibility described in 2024 coverage may no longer apply.
- Distinguish asking prices from sales. A listed item price does not show that anyone bought it at that amount.
- Treat market value as uncertain. Collectibles can fluctuate and should not be approached as guaranteed income.
- Read player counts with their dates. Historical peaks describe particular moments, not the game’s current audience.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
