A Switch 2 game-breaking bug can be fixed in three different places: the console’s system software, Nintendo’s compatibility layer, or the game itself through a publisher update. Some problems instead require a separately developed Switch 2 version. Installing only a console update is therefore not a universal cure.
The reliable approach is to update the Switch 2, update the affected game, restart and reproduce the fault, then check Nintendo’s current compatibility and startup-status entries. Those records distinguish resolved problems, investigations, temporary workarounds and fixes planned for a later update.

Which part of Switch 2 software can fix a bug?
“Backward compatible” describes whether existing Switch software can run on Switch 2; it does not promise that every mode, visual effect or online interaction will behave perfectly. A fault may belong to the console firmware, Nintendo’s compatibility implementation, the game’s own code, or a combination of them. Identifying that layer tells you which update to wait for and whether you need to buy a new edition.
| Remedy layer | What changes | Typical failures | What the player needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 system update | Nintendo updates the operating system, drivers or compatibility behavior used by Switch software. | System-level crashes, display handling, storage or networking behavior that affects multiple titles. | Install the latest console system software over the internet. |
| Compatibility-layer update | Nintendo changes how the Switch 2 emulates or translates a specific legacy behavior. | A title launches but renders incorrectly, loses a feature or behaves differently from the original Switch. | Usually delivered through a system update; check Nintendo’s title-specific status entry. |
| Publisher title update | The developer changes the game’s executable, assets, save handling or network code. | Startup failures, crashes in one scene, progression blocks, framerate problems, controls and online matchmaking. | From HOME, select the game, open its software-options menu and choose the internet update command. |
| Dedicated Switch 2 version | The publisher releases software built or redesigned specifically for Switch 2. | Problems that cannot be corrected safely in the original Switch build, or features that require new hardware support. | A separately distributed Switch 2 edition or upgrade may be required; a firmware update alone is insufficient. |
Nintendo’s support records explicitly separate an ordinary software update from a planned Switch 2 version. A listed “planned” remedy is not evidence that it has shipped, and Nintendo does not publish one universal completion date for all affected games.

Do these updates in this order
Use this sequence for a crash, a game that will not start, a broken save or progression event, visual corruption, an unexpected framerate change or an online-match failure. Record what happened before changing settings so you can tell whether the update altered the exact problem.
- Connect the Switch 2 to the internet. Open the console’s System Settings and use the system-update option. Install the newest version shown by the console and allow the restart to finish. Nintendo’s live system-update history lists versioned releases and says each release includes improvements from earlier updates.
- Update the affected game. On the HOME Menu, highlight the game, open its software-options menu and choose the option to update the software over the internet. Wait until the download and installation complete. Compatibility-specific defects are often delivered as publisher title updates rather than as console firmware.
- Restart and reproduce the same action. Launch the game again and test the precise trigger: starting a new session, loading the affected save, entering a particular display mode, joining matchmaking or performing the action that caused the crash. A general “it seems better” impression is less useful than repeating the original steps.
- Read Nintendo’s current compatibility entry. Nintendo maintains title-level records for issues that have been resolved, remain under investigation, vary by situation or have a fix planned. Compare the entry with your game version, console firmware and region before assuming that an old report describes the current build.
- Follow any temporary workaround. If Nintendo says to avoid a mode or feature, treat that as the supported short-term path. For example, Nintendo advised players to avoid Mii Fighter online matches in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate while a cross-generation online-match problem remained unresolved.
- Report an unlisted or persistent fault. Contact the publisher or Nintendo support with the game’s displayed version, the Switch 2 system-software version, region, a precise reproduction sequence and whether the failure occurs offline or online. Do not assume that deleting data or performing a factory reset will repair a software incompatibility.
How to read Nintendo’s compatibility statuses
“Previously identified issues have been resolved with an update”
This wording means Nintendo has recorded a fix as available for the identified problem. Install the relevant console or game update, then retest. It does not mean that every unrelated defect in the same title has disappeared.
Issue still visible in the compatibility list
An entry that describes a symptom without marking it resolved is a warning that the behavior may still occur. Keep the exact title, mode and conditions in your notes; two players can see different results if the fault depends on an online pairing, a save state or a display setting.
Under investigation
“Under investigation” means the cause and remedy are not yet established in Nintendo’s published status. It is not a shipping date. Continue using a documented workaround, if one exists, and check the entry after future updates.
Planned software update
A planned update indicates that Nintendo or the publisher intends to correct the existing software. Until the update is released and installed, the problem remains possible. The status does not establish when the patch will arrive.
Planned Switch 2 version
This status points to a dedicated build rather than a guaranteed repair to the original Switch package. The new version may be required for the publisher to redesign rendering, performance, input or other behavior. “Backward compatible” software can therefore remain imperfect until that separate version is available.

Examples of documented Switch 2 problems
Capcom Fighting Collection 2: progression and texture defects
Nintendo’s compatibility information lists progression effects and distorted character textures in some modes of Capcom Fighting Collection 2. The record identified a fix as planned shortly, which means the listed behavior should be treated as an outstanding compatibility problem until the corresponding update is installed and the entry is marked resolved. If a progression event is affected, keep a backup of the relevant save where the game supports one and avoid repeatedly overwriting the only copy while waiting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNintendo Switch Sports: football at 30 frames per second
In Nintendo Switch Sports, Nintendo documented football matches in Play Globally becoming 30 frames per second while the game speed stayed unchanged. This is a performance presentation defect, not evidence that the match simulation itself is running at half speed. Nintendo listed a fix as planned. Test the same Play Globally activity after updating; do not use a different sport or local mode as proof that the online football issue is gone.
Pikmin 3 Deluxe: scene-transition flicker
Pikmin 3 Deluxe was listed with screen flicker during scenes such as the start and end of the day, with a fix planned. Because the symptom is tied to particular transitions, a player can complete ordinary gameplay without seeing it. Reproduce the beginning or end-of-day sequence after updating rather than checking only the title screen.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: Mii Fighter online matches
Nintendo recorded a possible immediate end to an online match when a Switch 2 player and an original-Switch player were matched and one participant used a Mii Fighter. The published guidance was to avoid Mii Fighter online matches until the issue was resolved. That is a compatibility and online-interoperability case: changing a local graphics setting cannot correct the server-side or cross-generation condition.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe version 4.0.1
Version 4.0.1 of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe corrected an online and wireless issue in which Switch 2 players could see more obstacles or Item Boxes than players on the original Switch. This illustrates why checking the game’s version matters. The console can be fully updated while an older title build still produces the faulty race state; installing the title update is the relevant action.
Why a console update cannot fix every game crash
A system update can alter shared services and compatibility behavior, but it cannot automatically rewrite every publisher’s game logic. A crash caused by a title’s save parser, a progression flag, a particular asset or matchmaking rule generally requires a publisher patch. Conversely, if several unrelated games show the same display or system behavior, a console-level change is more plausible.

Some defects require a dedicated Switch 2 edition because the publisher has chosen to ship a redesigned build rather than keep modifying the original Switch executable. Nintendo’s planned-fixes records distinguish these cases. Do not interpret a planned Switch 2 version as confirmation that the existing cartridge or download will receive the same functionality for free; the status only identifies the type of remedy, not its price or release date.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Match the symptom to the likely remedy
| Symptom | First checks | Likely owner of the fix | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game will not launch | Console update, title update, Nintendo startup-status entry | Publisher, Nintendo compatibility team, or a planned Switch 2 edition | That reinstalling the game proves the software is compatible. |
| Crash during one scene or after loading a save | Title version, reproducible save or scene, compatibility entry | Usually the publisher title update | That a factory reset will repair the affected code or save. |
| Flicker, distorted textures or an incorrect display mode | Console firmware, affected mode, documented title status | Nintendo compatibility layer or publisher patch | That a television setting is the root cause when Nintendo lists the title. |
| Unexpected framerate or unchanged game speed | Exact mode, online or local conditions, title version | Publisher update, sometimes with compatibility changes | That a lower framerate automatically means the simulation is slower. |
| Cross-generation online match ends or shows different objects | Both players’ console generation, game version and network mode | Publisher network/title update, with Nintendo status guidance | That changing a local control or graphics option can fix matchmaking. |
| Feature works only after buying a new edition | Planned-fixes entry and the publisher’s edition description | Dedicated Switch 2 version | That every backward-compatible feature is included in the original release. |
What information to include in a support report
A useful report lets support distinguish a title defect from a console-wide problem. Include:
- Exact game name and whether it is a cartridge or digital copy.
- Game version displayed in the software information screen.
- Switch 2 system-software version.
- Country or region and the language or account region if relevant.
- The mode, course, scene, save slot or online pairing involved.
- Numbered steps that reproduce the fault, including whether restarting changes it.
- Any error code, crash message, visible artifact or video that shows the failure.
- Whether another game exhibits the same behavior on the same console.
These details are more actionable than reporting only that a game “doesn’t work.” If Nintendo’s entry already documents the issue, cite its wording and follow the listed workaround while waiting for the stated remedy.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How to verify that a fix actually arrived
After an update installs, confirm the displayed game and system versions rather than relying on the download notification. Re-run the original reproduction steps under the same conditions. For an online issue, test with the same generation combination and mode; for a graphics issue, use the same scene or display path; for a progression issue, use a save made before the blocked event when possible.
If the original symptom is gone but another problem remains, report the new behavior separately. A status saying that previously identified issues “have been resolved with an update” applies to the identified issue, not to every possible fault in the title.
Limits of the published compatibility lists
Nintendo’s compatibility and startup pages are dated snapshots that change as firmware and title updates are released. Check them immediately before troubleshooting and again after installing an update. The lists provide title-level statuses, not an aggregate failure rate for the Switch 2 library, so there is no authoritative percentage of games affected that can be applied to all players.
Region, edition, network conditions and the exact software version can change the result. A planned fix is not proof that the patch has shipped, and an installed console update is not proof that a publisher’s title-specific defect has been corrected. The combination of version checks, exact reproduction and Nintendo’s current status wording is the dependable way to tell whether you need to wait, apply a workaround or obtain a dedicated Switch 2 release.
