The Elder Scrolls has not formally moved from one genre to another. Its mainline games retain an open-world role-playing foundation while shifting the balance between world scale, authored detail, combat approaches, and how early players commit to a character. “Genre changes” is best understood as a change in emphasis—not a clean progression from one genre to the next or a universal ranking of the games.
What stays the same across the series?
Todd Howard summed up the shared design philosophy in a 2004 interview about Oblivion: “Live another life, in another world.” He also described the series’ “big-world, do-anything” style as essential. That broad role-playing freedom persists even as individual entries adjust how they present it. GameSpot’s 2004 interview with Howard discusses Oblivion’s design aims.

So the useful question is not whether Oblivion or Skyrim stopped being an RPG. It is what each game asks the player to notice and choose: a vast distance to cross, a distinctive place to investigate, a combat style to develop, or a character identity to settle into.
How did world scale and exploration change?
Bethesda’s retrospective contrasts Daggerfall’s extraordinary size with Morrowind’s smaller, more crafted experience. It describes Daggerfall as roughly as big as Great Britain; that is the publisher’s retrospective comparison, not a standardized modern measurement. The contrast illustrates two different attractions: breadth and distance on one side, authored environmental detail on the other. Bethesda’s series retrospective frames this design arc.

Map size alone cannot tell you which game offers better exploration. Howard has described open-ended diversions as a strength of Skyrim: a player might seek action, take a break, or talk to someone, following their own route through the game. Exploration is therefore also about self-direction and pacing—whether you enjoy choosing what to do next as much as reaching a destination. Howard’s discussion of Skyrim’s open-ended play gives context for that approach.
Morrowind’s identity is tied not just to its size but to its sense of place and the tools that let players express themselves. In a 2022 retrospective, then-Bethesda executive Pete Hines credited the game’s setting and modding tools with helping set the series on a new trajectory. That is Hines’s assessment of the game’s influence, rather than a neutral measure of exploration quality. Bethesda’s Morrowind retrospective covers that legacy.
What changed in combat—and what can we safely say?
The clearest evidence for a planned combat shift comes from Howard’s pre-release 2004 interview about Oblivion. He described deeper attacks learned as skills rose, making magic more viable as a sole approach, and substantially revising stealth. He also said the team valued skill-based advancement because it rewarded role-playing a character class. These are development intentions reported before release, not a complete assessment of how the shipped game balanced every style.

Bethesda later highlighted Skyrim’s impromptu dragon battles as a defining spectacle. That points to a memorable kind of encounter, but does not establish a full rules comparison between Skyrim and every earlier game. The available accounts support a change in combat emphasis and presentation; they do not provide a consistent metric for ranking combat depth across the series.
How do character builds affect the role-playing experience?
Build commitment is partly a question of when the game asks you to make choices. In a 2011 interview, Howard said some Oblivion players felt after several hours that they had chosen incorrectly. He described the Skyrim team’s aim as easing that early pressure, when players may not yet know which abilities they enjoy. Howard’s 2011 design interview explains the thinking behind that change.
This is design context, not proof that every Skyrim build is equally strong or that a more demanding commitment makes an older system better. It helps explain a trade-off: skill systems can make a character’s chosen role feel meaningful, while early flexibility can give players more room to discover what they like through play.

Which Elder Scrolls game fits your preferences?
There is no objective winner established by these comparisons. Bethesda’s retrospective highlights what different entries do well, and Howard himself warned against treating the series as a simple ladder: “There are certain things that Arena does better, or that Daggerfall does better than Morrowind or Oblivion, or even better than Skyrim.” Choose based on the kind of role-playing experience you want:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Choose for breadth: If vast scale and distance appeal to you, Bethesda singles out Daggerfall for its exceptional size.
- Choose for a distinctive, crafted setting: Morrowind is the entry Bethesda contrasts with Daggerfall as a smaller, more crafted experience; its retrospective also emphasizes sense of place and player expression through tools.
- Choose for skill-based character role-play: Howard’s account of Oblivion emphasizes advancing skills through play and connecting them with a character class, alongside intended changes to melee, magic, and stealth.
- Choose for flexibility while discovering a build: Howard described Skyrim’s design as an effort to reduce the feeling of having chosen wrong before players knew which powers suited them.
- Choose for self-directed pacing and dramatic encounters: Howard discussed players following their own diversions in Skyrim, while Bethesda has pointed to its spontaneous dragon battles as a signature spectacle.
These are preference cues, not claims that one game does every part of role-playing best. Across the series, the consistent draw is freedom to inhabit another world; the changing emphasis determines what kind of freedom feels most central in a particular entry.
