How This RC Car Prototype Sends Steering Forces Back to the Driver

A Hackaday-reported maker prototype measures force in an RC car’s steering, sends readings wirelessly, and recreates them through motors in a custom controller.

A maker-built RC car prototype turns steering forces into sensations at a motorized handheld controller. As reported by Hackaday, it measures force at the car’s steering mechanism with a bidirectional load cell, sends that data wirelessly to a second ESP32, and uses motors in a custom 3D-printed controller to make the feedback perceptible. It is a reported DIY experiment—not a commercial product or a demonstrated performance or safety upgrade.

How does force feedback work in an RC car?

A conventional remote sends steering commands to the car. This prototype adds a return path: steering-force data travels back from the car so the controller can reproduce some of what the steering mechanism encounters.

  1. Measure force at the car. A bidirectional load cell sits inside the steering mechanism and senses force in either direction.
  2. Send the measurement wirelessly. One of the build’s two ESP32 microcontrollers is on the car; the pair use ESP-NOW to transfer data to the controller.
  3. Recreate the sensation. Motors fitted to a custom 3D-printed controller provide haptic feedback to the operator.

The link must do more than deliver data: timing affects whether the steering wheel feels smooth or jitters, while filtering must reduce sensor noise without removing the fast force changes that make feedback informative. Hackaday’s August 6, 2024 report describes these as important engineering challenges in the build.

Why use a load cell instead of estimating force?

The creator initially explored a mathematical model to avoid sourcing expensive parts, but that approach reached a dead end. A second idea was to infer steering force from the servo’s electrical current. In a comment on Hackaday dated August 7, 2024, the creator reported that this particular servo-current experiment had minimum sensing thresholds of about 80 g in one direction and 130 g in the other; the load cell was reported accurate to about 5 g.

XHSESA Professional Linkage Switch Control Module for RC Model Car Brake Light Modification Parts
  • This module realizes automatic control of the switch of the brake light through the parallel connection between the ESC and the receiver.
  • The output pins of the module are only powered when the remote control is in the neutral position. No power is applied forward or backward.
  • The output voltage of the module = the output voltage of the receiver, which supports high voltage.
  • The output voltage of the module = the output voltage of the receiver, which supports high voltage. The output pins are suitable for JR, JST plugs. If it is reversed, the light will not turn on.
  • Suitable for climbing vehicles with neutral drag brake function

Those are creator-reported figures for this setup, not specifications for hobby servos or load cells generally. The creator noted that a different servo might respond more consistently to smaller deviations. The comparison explains why direct force sensing became the reported solution, but does not establish that every load cell will outperform every current-sensing approach.

What can the driver feel?

Hackaday’s account says the prototype can convey bumps and understeer, as well as sensations associated with drifting or driving over grass. These are reported impressions from the project, not results from a controlled evaluation. The report provides no measured effect on lap times, reaction time, or safety.

The creator also commented on August 7, 2024 that forces through the steering felt quite low, and suggested RC steering systems may be designed to protect servos and handle jumps rather than provide strong feedback. That observation points to a practical challenge: a sensing and haptic system can only communicate what the car’s steering mechanism transmits, and the available forces may be modest.

What the report establishes—and what it leaves open

  • Wireless hardware: the reported build uses two ESP32 microcontrollers and ESP-NOW, but the report does not identify exact board models or brands.
  • Force sensing: the reported solution is a bidirectional load cell inside the steering mechanism. No specific model or vendor is given.
  • Controller: the controller is a custom 3D-printed assembly with motors for haptic feedback; exact motor models are not stated.
  • Real-world benefit: the reported sensations do not establish an improvement in driving performance or safety.
  • Reproduction: the report describes the system but does not provide a complete, validated parts list or enough information to treat any particular component listing as tested or compatible.

For a similar maker project, ESP32 development boards, a bidirectional load cell, and haptic feedback motors are relevant component categories. The Hackaday report does not prescribe particular products, and selecting parts would require checking fit, sensing range, control timing, and integration with the chosen RC steering mechanism.

How this differs from other haptic teleoperation work

Stanford CHARM Lab’s 2026 “The Little Car that Could” project also explores haptic feedback for a remotely operated mobile robot, but it is a separate system with a different control approach. Its discussion of filtering latency, motor saturation, wheel slip, and the absence of field testing provides context for general teleoperation challenges; it is not evidence about the RC steering prototype or its results.
