Sign in with the account that should hold your history, use a Games or All Access subscription, and open the archive from the NYT Games area on the web or in the NYT Games app. The archive reaches back to June 12, 2023.
Archived games update several puzzle statistics, but they do not change your Current Streak or Max Streak. A puzzle you have already completed cannot be replayed in the official archive.

What you need before opening an older puzzle
- An NYT account: Sign in before choosing a date if you want archived progress and play history associated with your profile.
- Games or All Access access: The daily Connections game is free on supported platforms, but the full archive is a subscriber feature.
- A supported entry point: Use the Games area of the NYT website or the Connections Archive section of the NYT Games app. The archive is not located in the Play tab of the News app.
The New York Times Help Center describes the feature this way: “The new Connections archive allows All Access and Games Subscribers to play the full archive of Connections puzzles from as far back as June 12, 2023!” That date is the beginning of the official archive coverage described by the Help Center; it is not a promise that puzzles from earlier dates are available there.

On the NYT website
- Open the New York Times Games area through the navigation at nytimes.com/crosswords.
- Make sure you are signed in to the NYT account that has Games or All Access access.
- Choose Connections, then open Connections Archive from the game navigation.
If you arrive through a general news page and cannot see the archive, return to the Games navigation rather than looking in the News app’s Play tab. The archive is a Games feature.

In the NYT Games app
- Open the NYT Games app and sign in.
- Choose the Connections Archive section.
- Select a date that is not marked as completed, then play the grid normally.
The web and Games-app archive are the official access paths. A subscription that works for the daily game but is not recognized on the account you are using will not unlock the full archive, so check the signed-in account before troubleshooting the app.
How to play a past Connections puzzle
- Sign in first. Use the NYT account whose statistics and history you want to keep. An account is required for archived progress and play history to be saved.
- Confirm subscription access. The archive requires Games or All Access access. Connections itself may be playable without that subscription, but that does not grant the complete archive.
- Open the archive. On the website, enter through the Games navigation at nytimes.com/crosswords. In the NYT Games app, open the Connections Archive section.
- Pick an uncompleted date. The archive list uses visual status markers. An outlined gray box means the puzzle has not been started; purple lines indicate a puzzle in progress; a filled purple star marks a completed win; and an unfilled purple star marks a completion with no guesses remaining.
- Submit guesses as usual. Select four words, submit the group, and continue until you solve the puzzle or use all available guesses. The archive handles the puzzle like a normal game, while recording the result under your account.
Choosing an outlined gray box is the simplest way to find a puzzle you have never opened. A purple-lines marker means you can resume an unfinished attempt instead of starting a second copy.
How archived play changes your statistics
Playing an older puzzle is included in several account statistics. It is deliberately excluded from the two streak measures, which are tied to playing the puzzle on its original release day.

The Help Center states: “Playing Connections puzzles in the archive will not affect your streaks – both Current streaks and Max streaks.” In practical terms, solving several old boards cannot extend a live streak, and missing an archived board cannot break one that was earned on release days.
Completion states, unfinished games, and replay limits
What each archive marker means
- Outlined gray box: You have not started that date.
- Purple lines: You began the puzzle but have not completed it.
- Filled purple star: You completed the puzzle with a win.
- Unfilled purple star: You completed it after running out of guesses.
These markers let you distinguish an untouched puzzle from one that is waiting for you to finish. They are especially useful when you have worked through dates in more than one session.
Can you replay a puzzle you already finished?
No. A completed archived puzzle cannot be replayed in the official archive. Once a date has a completed result, the archive does not provide a second attempt for that same account. If you want to revisit the word groups, you can review the completed result, but you cannot reset it to an unplayed state through the official interface.

Official archive versus an independent archive
Some players want a free way to browse older boards or to replay a board after completing it. Independent sites exist, but they are separate from the New York Times and should not be treated as extensions of the official account system.

If preserving official statistics, using the NYT’s own release history, and keeping play inside one account matter to you, use the official archive. An independent archive can be useful for browsing community material or looking for a second attempt, but it will not turn that activity into an NYT-recorded game.
You can find the independent service at connectionsgame.org. Treat any puzzle presentation, answer reveal, login prompt, or progress system there as belonging to that site rather than to your NYT account.

Troubleshooting common access problems
The archive is missing from the screen
- Check that you are in the Games area, not the News app’s Play tab.
- Confirm that the account currently signed in has Games or All Access access.
- On mobile, open the NYT Games app and look specifically for Connections Archive, rather than the ordinary daily Connections tile.
A date before June 12, 2023 is unavailable
The official Help Center identifies June 12, 2023 as the earliest date in the full archive. A date earlier than that is outside the documented official coverage, so changing browsers or reinstalling the app will not add it to the NYT archive.
My old game is not saving
Archived progress and play history require an NYT account. Sign in before starting the puzzle, and verify that you are using the same account when you return. Playing while signed out can prevent the result from being associated with the profile you intended to use.

That is expected. Archive results update Puzzles Completed, Win Rate %, Perfect Puzzles, and Mistake Distribution, but Current Streak and Max Streak are based on the puzzle played on its release day.

I want to solve the same completed date again
The official archive does not support replaying a completed puzzle. You would need to use an independent service, accepting that its puzzle coverage, accuracy, spoiler handling, and statistics are separate from the NYT system.
Choosing the right route
Use the official archive when account history matters
Choose the NYT route if you want your archived wins, losses, guesses, and completion totals reflected in the statistics attached to your account. It is also the appropriate choice when you want the archive documented and maintained as part of NYT Games. The trade-off is the Games or All Access requirement and the inability to replay a completed date.
Consider an independent archive only for a different use case
An independent archive may suit someone who does not have NYT subscription access, wants to browse community-created puzzles, or specifically wants to attempt a board again after finishing it. Keep the distinction clear: that activity is outside the official NYT archive, and the NYT does not guarantee the other site’s availability, answers, spoiler controls, or account behavior.
