Open the .minecraft folder on Windows in 10 steps
- Confirm that you are using Minecraft: Java Edition. These locations are not a universal path for every Minecraft edition.
- Save and leave any world you have open.
- Close Minecraft before you plan to edit, replace, troubleshoot, or back up files.
- Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.

Not every folder appears on every computer. For example, screenshots may not exist until you have taken a screenshot, and a backup folder depends on the software you use.

macOS and Linux locations
For the default Java Edition game directory on another desktop operating system, open the exact path rather than hunting through hidden folders.

In both paths, ~ means your signed-in user’s home folder. On Linux, the leading dot in .minecraft means the directory can be hidden in a graphical file manager; entering the path directly avoids needing a distribution-specific “show hidden files” shortcut.

When the default folder is missing or has the wrong files
The default location is a starting point, not a guarantee. It can differ when you use multiple Java installations, a custom game directory, or a launcher configuration that points to another folder. Use the Minecraft Launcher to locate the installation you actually play:
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and sign in.
- Select Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Select Installations.
- Find the installation you use.
- Select its folder icon to open that installation’s folder on your computer.
This is the best route when the default path does not exist, your expected world or screenshot is missing, or you keep separate installations for mods, snapshots, or different versions.

Handle world files carefully
Close the game before copying or modifying world files. For a backup, copy the entire relevant world folder from saves to a separate location such as another folder outside .minecraft. Do not delete unknown files just to free space or fix a problem.
Be especially cautious with downloaded worlds from sources you do not trust. Unexpected symbolic links in a downloaded world can potentially point outside the world’s folder, creating a risk of writing to or overwriting files elsewhere on the computer. Keep a backup before making changes, and avoid opening suspicious downloads.

What if the default .minecraft folder is not the one I use?
