To add a font to Google Docs, open the document in the desktop or web version, open the toolbar’s Font menu, choose More fonts, select the typefaces you want, and confirm with OK. The selected fonts then appear in your font list. Google Docs does not provide a documented way to upload your own TTF or OTF files, and the mobile app documentation covers applying available fonts rather than adding new ones. If you want a visual browsing sidebar, an optional free Marketplace add-on can preview and apply fonts, but the built-in desktop dialog is the supported starting point.

How do I add a font to Google Docs on a computer?

The built-in More fonts dialog is the normal way to expand the Google Docs font list. You do not need to download a font file or install a desktop font first; choose from the faces Google makes available in Docs.

  1. Open the document. Use Google Docs in a desktop browser and open the document where you want to work.
  2. Select text if you are changing existing writing. Drag across the words, paragraph, or heading you want to restyle. If you are preparing to type new text, place the cursor where the new text should begin; the next font choice will apply to text entered there.
  3. Open the Font menu. In the toolbar, click the control that shows the current typeface.
  4. Choose More fonts. This opens the font-selection dialog. Google describes this dialog as having sorting and search options, with categories such as serif, script, and mono.
  5. Select the faces you want. Click each font you want to add to your list. You can search by name or narrow the list with the available category and sorting controls.
  6. Confirm the selection. Press Tab until OK is focused, then press Enter. The selected faces are added to the Font menu.
  7. Apply the font. With your text still selected, reopen the Font menu and choose the newly added face. If you were starting new text, continue typing after choosing it.

Google’s Help guidance qualifies availability by language: “In some languages, you can add new fonts to your font list.” That means the dialog and its choices can depend on the document’s language support; a font you expect may not appear in every language context.

How can I find a font quickly instead of scrolling?

Use the search field in More fonts when you know a typeface’s name, and use categories when you are choosing by style rather than by a specific family.

  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Search by name

Open the Font menu and choose More fonts, then type the name into the dialog’s search control. Select the result and confirm it with OK. Afterward, choose the font from the regular toolbar menu to apply it.

Search by category

Categories such as serif, script, and mono help when you know the visual role you need but not the exact name. A serif face can suit long-form reading, a script face can be decorative, and a mono face can distinguish code or aligned text; the category is a starting filter, not a guarantee that every result will fit your document.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use keyboard search

Google Docs also supports searching for a font by name from the keyboard. Press Alt + / on Windows or ChromeOS, or Option + / on Mac, type more fonts, and press Enter to open the command. Once a font is in your list, the same command search can help you locate a font by name and press Enter to apply it.

How do I apply the new font to existing text?

Adding a face to the list does not automatically restyle every paragraph. Select the exact text that should change, open the Font menu, and click the added font.

  • For one word or sentence, drag over that text before choosing the font.
  • For a whole paragraph, select the paragraph or place the cursor inside it if the paragraph style is what you intend to change.
  • For several separate areas, apply the font to each selection; a font choice affects the current selection, not unrelated text elsewhere in the document.
  • For text you have not typed yet, choose the font first and then continue entering text.

If a font does not appear in the short toolbar list, open More fonts again and verify that it is selected. The dialog is where you add faces; the ordinary Font menu is where you use them.

How do I make a font the default for new Google Docs documents?

Google Docs uses paragraph styles for document-wide defaults. To save a typeface as your default Normal text style, first format sample text, update the style, and then save the style settings.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
  1. Select text and choose the font, size, and other formatting you want for ordinary body text.
  2. Open Format > Paragraph styles > Normal text > Update “Normal text” to match.
  3. Open Format > Paragraph styles > Options > Save as my default styles.

This sequence changes the saved Normal text style rather than merely changing one paragraph. Heading styles remain separate, so a document that uses Title, Heading 1, or other named styles may require those styles to be updated independently if you want a coordinated type system.

Can I add a font to Google Docs on Android or iPhone?

The mobile Docs instructions gathered for this task explain how to change the font of a selection, but they do not document a mobile workflow for adding new faces to the font list. For reliable font discovery, use the desktop or web dialog first, then use the mobile app to apply fonts that are already available.

Changing an available font on Android

  1. Open the document in the Google Docs app and tap Edit.
  2. Select the text you want to change.
  3. Tap Format.
  4. Choose Font, then select an available typeface.

The Android documentation specifically covers changing a selection’s font style, size, text color, and highlight color. It does not show a More fonts command for adding new families.

What about iPhone and iPad?

The authoritative material gathered here does not establish a guaranteed iOS method for adding new fonts. Treat the desktop/web workflow as the dependable way to expand the list, and avoid assuming that an iPhone or iPad exposes the same controls as the computer interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I upload my own TTF or OTF font file?

No custom font-file upload workflow is documented for Google Docs. A Google Docs Help Community answer says custom font uploads are not supported and recommends adding available fonts from the desktop interface instead.

That limitation matters if you have a typeface licensed for your computer but absent from Google’s list: installing it locally does not make it selectable in Docs. Your practical choices are to use a comparable face from More fonts, ask collaborators to choose an available family, or create the material in software that supports the required installed font before exporting a final format. The last option changes your editing workflow and may reduce the convenience of collaborative Docs editing.

What is the difference between built-in Docs, mobile Docs, and a font add-on?

All three approaches can help you work with typography, but they do different jobs. The desktop dialog is built into Docs and adds supported faces; mobile Docs is primarily for applying faces already available; an add-on adds a browsing interface without changing the underlying custom-upload limitation.

Option Can add new faces? Where it runs Search or preview Custom file upload Requires installation?
Google Docs More fonts Yes, from Google’s available list Desktop/web interface Search, sorting, and categories No No; built into Docs
Google Docs mobile app Mobile documentation gathered here does not show an add-font workflow Android; iOS behavior for adding faces is not established Can choose from available fonts; no documented mobile add-font dialog No documented upload route No separate add-on required
Fonts for Google Docs™ Marketplace add-on Browses and applies fonts offered through its sidebar Google Workspace Marketplace sidebar Previews your own text and offers categories, language filters, and favorites according to its listing Not stated as supported Yes; optional add-on

The add-on listing reports 1,942 fonts and says it was updated July 20, 2026. It also states that the add-on is free. Those figures and the feature set belong to that Marketplace listing and can change independently of Google Docs itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When is the Fonts for Google Docs add-on useful?

Use the optional Marketplace add-on when the built-in dialog’s list is sufficient for availability but inconvenient for browsing. Its listing says it opens a sidebar, previews fonts using your own text, and applies a selected face with one click.

Situations where it can save time

  • You want to compare several candidates visually before committing to one.
  • You prefer category, language, or favorites filters to repeated name searches.
  • You are exploring a large catalog and want a persistent sidebar instead of reopening the standard dialog.

What it does not change

An add-on is an extra Workspace component, not a way to upload a private font file. Check its Marketplace permissions and your organization’s Workspace policy before installing it, especially on managed school or work accounts. The built-in More fonts route remains the simplest option when you only need a known family.

Why can’t I see the font I selected?

Most visibility problems come from using a different interface, failing to confirm the dialog, or looking for a face in the wrong menu. Work through these checks in order.

The selection was not confirmed

Return to Font > More fonts, select the typeface again, press Tab until OK is focused, and press Enter. Closing the dialog without confirming does not add the selection.

You are looking in the mobile app

The mobile instructions cover choosing an available font, not expanding the list. Open the document on a computer, add the face there, and then check the mobile Font control for the available choice.

The name or language does not match

Search by the exact family name, then try category browsing. Google notes that adding new fonts is available in some languages, so language support can affect which choices appear.

You changed the list but not the text

Adding a font only makes it available. Select the target words or paragraph and choose the face from the ordinary Font menu to apply it.

How should I choose a font for a shared or long document?

Choose a face that remains readable at the document’s normal size, test it on the actual headings and paragraphs, and use paragraph styles when the choice needs to be consistent. A decorative script that works for a short title can become difficult to scan in several pages of body copy; a mono face can make aligned snippets clear but may look unusually wide in ordinary prose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For body text: test a representative paragraph, including punctuation, numbers, and accented characters.
  • For headings: check the largest and smallest heading levels you plan to use rather than testing only one title.
  • For code or tabular text: a mono category can preserve character alignment, but verify that the resulting line length still fits the page.
  • For collaboration: tell co-editors which font and paragraph style to use so later edits do not drift into a different face.

When the formatting must persist across new files, save the updated Normal text style as your default after testing it. For a single document, changing the relevant style is less disruptive than changing every paragraph manually.

What are the limits of adding fonts in Google Docs?

Google Docs gives you a curated, searchable list rather than a general font-management system. You can add and apply supported families, but the gathered guidance does not promise every language, every typeface, or any method for importing private font files.

  • Availability varies: Google’s wording limits the add-font capability to “some languages.”
  • Desktop is the complete workflow: the documented More fonts dialog is provided for the computer interface.
  • Mobile is narrower: Android documentation focuses on formatting an existing selection; iOS add-font behavior is not established here.
  • Files cannot be uploaded: Help Community guidance says custom font uploads are unsupported.
  • Add-ons are optional: a Marketplace sidebar can improve browsing, but it is separate software and does not replace Docs’ built-in availability rules.

What is the fastest reliable workflow?

For most users, use this short sequence on a computer, then switch back to the mobile app only for ordinary editing.

  1. Open the document in desktop Google Docs.
  2. Open Font > More fonts.
  3. Search or filter the list, select the desired face, and confirm with OK.
  4. Select the text that needs the font and choose the face from the Font menu.
  5. If it should carry into future documents, update Normal text and save your default styles.

This keeps the supported add-font action in the interface that documents it, avoids unsupported custom uploads, and leaves mobile Docs for applying the fonts that are already available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to install a font on my computer before using it in Google Docs?

No installation step is part of the documented Docs workflow. You select a supported face in the More fonts dialog; installing a separate TTF or OTF file does not add that file to Docs.

Why does Google say fonts are available only in some languages?

Google’s wording is a qualification on the add-font feature, not a promise that every listed family appears in every language context. If a family is missing, check the dialog’s search and categories and consider whether the document’s language affects availability.

Can I preview a font with my own words before applying it?

The optional Fonts for Google Docs™ Marketplace add-on says its sidebar previews fonts using your own text and applies a choice with one click. The standard Docs dialog provides search and sorting, but the add-on is the option specifically described as a preview workspace.

What should I do if my organization blocks Workspace add-ons?

Use the built-in desktop More fonts dialog, which requires no separate add-on. If the exact private font is unavailable, choose a supported substitute because custom font-file uploads are not provided by Google Docs.
