To add an on-screen GUI in Roblox Studio, insert a ScreenGui into StarterGui, then add a visual object such as a TextLabel or Frame inside it. Select the object and edit its appearance in the Properties window. A static label or panel does not need a script.
Add a basic on-screen GUI
- Open Explorer. If it is not visible, open it from Studio’s window or interface controls.
- Insert a ScreenGui. In Explorer, find
StarterGui, hover over it, click the ⊕ insert button, and chooseScreenGui. - Add something to display. Hover over the new
ScreenGui, click ⊕, and select an object. ChooseTextLabelfor text,ImageLabelfor an image, or aFramefor a panel or layout container. - Style the object. Select the child object and use Properties to change settings such as text, size, position, color, and background transparency.
- Preview the layout. Use Studio’s device emulation to check how it looks at different screen sizes.
Keep the hierarchy straightforward: StarterGui contains the ScreenGui, and the visible interface objects are children of that ScreenGui. Roblox uses StarterGui as a template, copying its ScreenGui contents into each player’s PlayerGui when the character first spawns. A ScreenGui displays when it is parented to PlayerGui.

Choose a GUI container for where it should appear

For a conventional menu or HUD, start with ScreenGui under StarterGui. Use SurfaceGui when the interface belongs on a part’s face; parent it to the part and add labels beneath it. Choose BillboardGui for interface content displayed in the 3D world.

Make the GUI fit different screens
Open Studio’s device emulator and preview the interface on more than one device category or aspect ratio. Check that important controls stay in the safe area: the ScreenInsets setting accounts for space used by cutouts and Roblox’s top bar. A layout that looks fine on one screen may need adjustment on another.

When you need a script
You can create and style a static label, image, or panel entirely in Studio. Add scripting when the interface must respond to player input or update based on game state—for example, when a button triggers an action or a HUD value changes during play.
