In Gray Zone Warfare, quests are called tasks. To unlock more, complete available tasks and trade items to build vendor reputation; leveling vendors opens access to additional regions, tougher tasks, and better equipment. Find and accept currently available tasks from the tactical map. This reflects the official task system as of October 8, 2026.

How the task-unlock system works

Update 0.4 made task progression a loop: complete tasks and trade items to earn vendor reputation, then level vendors to unlock more of the game’s progression. MADFINGER Games says vendor levels open new regions, more dangerous and profitable tasks, and access to better weapons, gear, and items. The update added more than 250 tasks in total, including over 100 new tasks and contracts and more than 50 updated tasks; that is the game’s overall task count, not a required number for any individual unlock. Read the Update 0.4 changelog.

Regions can be explored, but simply entering one does not unlock all its tasks. Task availability depends on progression, and the official material does not publish a universal task order or exact vendor-reputation thresholds for every unlock.

Where to find and accept new tasks

  1. Open the tactical map. Available tasks appear there with approximate objective locations.
  2. Select an available task on the map and accept it. Since Update 0.4, the map—not the vendor screen—is the task-discovery and acceptance interface.
  3. Check the task’s prerequisites and region. If a task is not available, continue progression with the relevant vendor and check the map again as your access changes.

MADFINGER’s Update 0.4 changelog states: “All available tasks are now shown on the map, including the approximate locations of the objectives, and can be accepted directly from the map instead of through the task list.” The map gives approximate locations, so use it to orient yourself rather than expecting every objective to be precisely marked.

Which tasks contribute to progression?

Update 0.4 separates tasks into three types. All fit into the broader progression system, but they serve different purposes:

Task type Role Useful to know
Main Tasks Advance the main PMC story. They are part of the main narrative progression.
Side Tasks Explore Lamang lore. They add story and world context beyond the main PMC storyline.
Contracts Offer simpler objectives. They replaced Squad Strike Missions and can be played solo or in a squad.

For vendor progression, focus on tasks that are available to you and trade items when useful. First-time task completions award a larger reputation boost than repeat completions, making a new task a particularly valuable opportunity when you can complete it safely. MADFINGER’s task progression devlog also says a set number of tasks will always be available across the map, though it does not specify a fixed sequence for unlocking a particular task.

What happens if a task fails?

In most cases, dying causes task failure. The task becomes temporarily unavailable and may reappear after time has passed, rather than returning immediately. The March 2026 progression devlog names Hazardous Treasures and Terminal Initiative as exceptions. Starter Town tasks are also excluded from the general replayability rule: most tasks can be replayed, but Starter Town tasks cannot.

A failed task costs reputation equal to 10% of the reputation the task would have awarded on success. For example, a task worth 200 reputation on success carries a 20-reputation failure penalty. Tasks no longer depend on a particular time of day, according to the same devlog.

Can you share tasks with your squad?

Patch 0.4.5.0 allows eligible tasks to be shared, but every participating player must meet the requirements. All squad members must be on the same server, have the task’s region and vendor unlocked, and satisfy its prerequisites. See the Patch 0.4.5.0 changelog.

These task categories cannot be shared:

  • Tasks already in progress
  • Long-term Contracts
  • Boss-kill tasks
  • Starter Town tasks
  • Chameleon tasks
  • Choice-based tasks
  • Hazardous Treasures

For a shared task with a survival condition, the task fails if any participating squad member dies in action.

If a task does not appear

  • Check the tactical map. The map shows currently available tasks and their approximate objectives; tasks are no longer listed on the vendor screen.
  • Review progression requirements. Confirm that you have unlocked the relevant region and vendor and met any prerequisites shown for the task.
  • Build the relevant vendor’s reputation. Complete available tasks and trade items. The official sources do not provide a complete task-by-task prerequisite chart or exact thresholds for every unlock, so there is no reliable universal task count to follow.
  • Account for a recent failure. Most failed tasks become temporarily unavailable and can return after time has passed, but named exceptions and Starter Town rules apply.
  • Check the current patch notes if the task appears bugged. The July 2026 combined Patch 0.4.6.0/0.4.7.0 notes include a fix for the final “Rat’s Nest” objective not unlocking for players who started before 0.4.6.0. The new onboarding flow is only for completely fresh accounts; an existing account does not receive it even after a character wipe. Read the Patch 0.4.6.0 and 0.4.7.0 changelog.

The in-game Field Manual contains more than 110 pages, according to MADFINGER’s progression devlog, and can be consulted for game reference. The official sources do not establish that it contains a complete task-prerequisite chart.
