Use GIMP’s built-in Filters → Light and Shadow → Drop Shadow to add a shadow to text, an image layer, or a selection. The GEGL filter lets you set the shadow’s horizontal and vertical offset, blur, growth, color, and opacity. Your source must have transparency (an alpha channel); otherwise the filter can be unavailable or produce an unwanted rectangle. For more control over the shadow as a separate editable layer, duplicate the source and build the shadow manually.

This guide covers both workflows, the preparation an image needs, the differences between GIMP 3.0, GIMP 2.10, and the legacy filter, and fixes for clipped, harsh, misplaced, or rectangular shadows.

Which shadow method should you use in GIMP?

Choose the built-in GEGL filter for a fast, adjustable result. Choose the duplicate-layer method when the shadow needs its own layer, a different shape, or independent editing after the source changes.

Method Best for What you control Main requirement
GEGL Drop Shadow Most text, image, and selection shadows Offset, blur, growth, color, and opacity in one filter dialog The active source needs an alpha channel
Manual duplicate layer Separate shadow editing or a custom layer structure Duplicate placement, inversion, transparency cleanup, blur, and opacity independently A duplicate that can be edited beneath the original
Drop Shadow (legacy) Older projects or installations that expose the legacy entry Offset, blur, color, opacity, and optional image resizing Menu availability depends on the GIMP installation

In either workflow, preview the result at the final viewing size. A shadow that looks subtle at 25% zoom can dominate a small title card, while a shadow that looks strong at 200% may disappear in a full-size export.

What must be ready before adding a shadow?

The filter works most predictably when the visible object sits on transparency rather than on a solid rectangle. Before opening the filter, check the active layer and its boundaries.

  • Select the correct layer. Click the text layer, image layer, or selection-bearing layer that should cast the shadow.
  • Confirm transparency. The layer needs an alpha channel. If the layer has no alpha, use the layer’s transparency controls to add one before trying the filter again.
  • Check the layer boundary. A tight boundary around the object is easier to position, but a very small boundary can clip a large offset or blur. Enlarge the layer or image boundary when the shadow needs room.
  • Keep the source readable. For text, choose the final wording, type size, and line breaks before tuning the shadow. For an image, remove unwanted background areas first.
  • Save a working copy. This makes it easy to compare the shadowed and unshadowed versions while you tune the effect.

How do you add a shadow with GIMP’s built-in filter?

In GIMP 3.0, open Filters → Light and Shadow → Drop Shadow. GIMP 2.10 uses the same menu family. The filter can act on an image, a selection, or text, provided the source has alpha transparency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Activate the source. In the Layers dock, select the text layer or image layer. If you want the shadow on only part of an image, make the selection before opening the filter.
  2. Open Drop Shadow. Choose Filters → Light and Shadow → Drop Shadow. A preview and controls appear in the filter dialog.
  3. Set the direction. Adjust X and Y. Positive and negative values move the shadow in opposite directions; negative values place it to the left or above the source.
  4. Soften the edge. Adjust Blur radius. A larger radius spreads the shadow and creates softer edges.
  5. Set the footprint. Use Grow shape and Grow radius to expand or contract the shadow before it is blurred.
  6. Choose a color. Use the color control to select a shadow color. The control can also sample a color from the image when that better matches the design.
  7. Set transparency. Lower Opacity to let more of the background show through the shadow.
  8. Apply the effect. Confirm the filter, then inspect the layer order and all canvas edges. If the shadow is cut off, undo the effect, enlarge the boundary, and apply it again.

How do you shadow text?

Create or select the text layer, then open the Drop Shadow filter directly on that layer. Because the letters themselves define the transparent shape, the shadow follows the glyphs and their spacing. Finish text edits first: changing the wording or line breaks changes the shape that receives the effect.

For a compact title, use a small offset and restrained opacity so the shadow separates letters from the background without filling counters such as the inside of an “O” or “R.” For display text over a busy image, a slightly larger blur can improve separation while preserving the letter shapes.

How do you shadow an image or a selection?

Put the image or pasted object on a transparent layer, or make a selection around the object you want to cast a shadow. Activate that layer or selection and open Drop Shadow. The filter follows the non-transparent shape, so a solid background left on the layer will also receive a shadow.

When working with a selection, keep the selection active until the filter is opened. If the result includes areas outside the intended object, cancel the filter and remove those opaque pixels before trying again.

What does each Drop Shadow control do?

The controls change separate parts of the effect. Adjust one group at a time so you can tell which change solved a problem.

Control Effect on the shadow Useful adjustment
X Horizontal offset from the source Use a negative value when the shadow should move left.
Y Vertical offset from the source Use a negative value when the shadow should move above the source.
Blur radius Gaussian blur applied to the shadow Increase it for a softer edge; reduce it for a crisper, graphic edge.
Grow shape The shape used while expanding or contracting the shadow Change it when the shadow’s expanded outline does not match the source’s geometry.
Grow radius How far the shadow expands or contracts before blurring Increase it for a broader halo; reduce it when the shadow feels oversized.
Color The shadow’s hue Choose a neutral dark or sample a color that fits the image’s lighting.
Opacity How transparent the shadow is Lower it when the background should remain more visible.

How do you prepare a transparent image or pasted object?

The most reliable preparation is to isolate the object, make the working layer transparent around it, and then restore a usable image boundary before applying the filter.

  1. Start with transparency. Use an image or layer whose background is transparent. If the layer was imported without transparency, add an alpha channel through the layer’s transparency controls.
  2. Paste or place the object. Put the logo, cutout, or other object on its own layer. Keep it separate from the background so the filter can read its shape.
  3. Anchor pasted content when needed. If GIMP shows the pasted material as a floating selection, anchor it or convert it into a layer before continuing.
  4. Crop the working layer to content. Remove excess empty area around the object so the object’s actual outline is easy to inspect and position.
  5. Restore the layer to image size with transparency. This gives the layer a predictable canvas while preserving transparent pixels around the object.
  6. Apply Drop Shadow. With the prepared layer active, open the filter and tune the offset, blur, growth, color, and opacity.
  7. Inspect every edge. A large blur or offset can extend beyond the current boundary. Expand the layer or image boundary and repeat the filter if any portion is clipped.

This preparation is especially useful for logos and cutouts that were pasted from another document. It prevents the shadow from following a hidden rectangular background instead of the visible object.

How do you create a shadow manually with a duplicate layer?

The manual method creates a conventional layer-based shadow beneath the original. It takes more steps than the GEGL filter, but you can move, blur, recolor, or hide the shadow independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Duplicate the source layer. Keep the original above the duplicate. The upper layer remains the visible text or image; the lower layer becomes the shadow.
  2. Move the duplicate below the source. In the Layers dock, place the duplicate underneath the original so the original covers the overlapping area.
  3. Invert the duplicate. Choose Colors → Invert to turn the duplicate into a dark starting shape.
  4. Remove unwanted background. Choose Layer → Transparency → Color to Alpha on the duplicate. This removes the unwanted background color and leaves the object’s shape available for the shadow.
  5. Offset the shadow. Use the Move tool to move the duplicate down and to the right, or in another direction that suits the design.
  6. Blur the duplicate. Apply Gaussian Blur to soften its edges. Increase the blur for a diffuse shadow and reduce it for a sharper, sticker-like outline.
  7. Reduce opacity. Lower the duplicate layer’s opacity until the background remains visible and the source stays dominant.
  8. Check for rectangles. If a rectangular block remains, cancel or undo, make sure the duplicate has transparency, and use Color to Alpha before blurring again.

Because the duplicate is independent, you can reposition it later without changing the source. You can also keep several shadow duplicates with different blur or opacity settings, although each extra layer should have a clear purpose.

What changes between GIMP 3.0, 2.10, and the legacy filter?

The current workflow is similar across versions, but the exact filter entry can differ. Use the version-appropriate item that appears in your installation.

GIMP version or filter Menu and behavior
GIMP 3.0 The GEGL Drop Shadow is documented under Filters → Light and Shadow → Drop Shadow. It works on an image, selection, or text and requires an alpha channel.
GIMP 2.10 The same menu family is used, and alpha transparency is also required for the source.
Drop Shadow (legacy) Some older installations show a separate legacy entry. It provides offset, blur, color, opacity, and an optional image-resizing control.

If two Drop Shadow entries appear, start with the regular GEGL entry. Use the legacy option when an older project depends on it or when its resizing control solves a boundary problem that the current filter does not.

How do you make a shadow look natural instead of harsh?

Natural-looking results come from balancing distance, softness, size, color, and transparency rather than maximizing any single control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match offset to the imagined light

Pick one light direction for the composition. If the shadow moves down and right, highlights and other cast shadows should not imply a light source from the opposite side. Small offsets usually keep text attached to its surface; larger offsets make the object appear lifted.

Match blur to distance

A nearby object generally reads with a tighter edge, while a floating or distant shadow reads with a wider blur. If the edge looks cut out with a hard dark border, increase blur before increasing opacity.

Use growth to avoid a pinched outline

Blur alone can make a shadow look smaller around narrow letters and corners. A modest grow setting can preserve a fuller footprint before the blur spreads it. If the shadow balloons around the object, reduce the grow radius.

Lower opacity before making the color lighter

Opacity controls how much of the background remains visible. Reducing opacity often produces a more flexible result than choosing a very pale shadow color, especially when the design may be placed over different backgrounds.

Consider colored shadows

A shadow does not have to be pure black. The color control can sample from the image, allowing a cool shadow for a blue scene or a warm shadow for a sunset palette. Keep enough contrast that the edge remains visible.

How do you fix common GIMP shadow problems?

Why is the Drop Shadow filter unavailable?

The active layer probably lacks an alpha channel. Add alpha transparency to that layer, select it again, and reopen Filters → Light and Shadow → Drop Shadow. Also verify that you are not working on a layer type that cannot provide the transparent shape the filter needs.

Why is the shadow clipped at the edge?

The shadow extends beyond the current layer or image boundary. Cancel or undo the effect, enlarge the layer or image boundary, and apply the filter again. The legacy filter’s optional resizing control can help on installations where that entry is available.

Why does the shadow look too hard?

Increase the blur radius and reduce opacity if necessary. A hard edge can also result from a very small grow radius combined with a strong, dark color; soften the blur before changing the offset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is the shadow on the wrong side?

Change the sign or value of X and Y. Negative X moves the shadow left, and negative Y moves it above the source. If the direction is right but the distance is excessive, bring the values closer to zero.

Why did I get a rectangle around the object?

The source or manual duplicate still contains opaque background pixels. Return to the transparent preparation steps, or on the manual duplicate use Layer → Transparency → Color to Alpha before applying Gaussian Blur.

Why does the shadow disappear behind the source?

Check the layer order. In the manual workflow, the shadow duplicate belongs below the original. If it is above, it can cover the source or produce an unexpected dark edge rather than a cast shadow.

How should you check the result before exporting?

Inspect the image at three scales: close enough to see letter and object edges, at the intended display size, and zoomed out to judge the overall balance. Look for clipped corners, a halo that is larger than the object, and a direction that conflicts with nearby lighting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Toggle the source or shadow layer visibility to compare the effect with the original.
  • Check all four canvas edges after large offsets or blur.
  • Verify that transparent areas remain transparent around the object.
  • Confirm that text remains legible at the size where it will be used.
  • Save the editable project with layers intact before creating a flattened copy.

If the final design needs a shadow that can be revised independently, keep the manual duplicate. If the effect is finished and the layer structure is not needed, the built-in filter provides the shorter path.

Quick checklist for adding a GIMP shadow

  1. Select the text, image, or selection that should cast the shadow.
  2. Confirm the active layer has an alpha channel and transparent space around the object.
  3. Open Filters → Light and Shadow → Drop Shadow.
  4. Set X and Y for direction and distance.
  5. Set blur radius for edge softness.
  6. Use grow settings to control the shadow footprint.
  7. Choose a color and adjust opacity.
  8. Apply the effect and inspect layer order and canvas boundaries.
  9. If the filter does not provide the required structure, duplicate the source and build the shadow manually beneath it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a shadow color other than black in GIMP?

Yes. The Drop Shadow color control accepts a chosen color and can sample from the image. A tinted shadow can harmonize with the scene while still separating the subject from its background.

What should I do if my pasted logo is treated as a floating selection?

Anchor the pasted content or turn it into its own layer before applying the effect. Then keep transparency around the logo so the shadow follows the logo’s outline rather than the paste area.

Is the manual duplicate method reversible?

Yes, as long as you keep the original layer and the duplicate separate in the project. You can hide, move, blur, recolor, or delete the shadow layer without altering the source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a large blur need extra canvas space?

Blur spreads pixels beyond the original object boundary. If the layer or image ends too close to the object, those expanded pixels are cut off, so enlarge the boundary before applying the effect.
