You can restore access to a WordPress site you own or are authorized to manage by adding a row to its users table and assigning that account the administrator capability in the matching usermeta table. Back up the database first, use the site’s actual table prefix, and treat the password step cautiously: tutorials commonly recommend the MD5 function in phpMyAdmin, but the reviewed material does not establish how that method behaves on current WordPress releases.

Before you start: confirm this is the right recovery method
Use this procedure only if you are authorized to administer the site and cannot create or recover an administrator through the usual WordPress login and account-recovery routes. Database editing bypasses WordPress’s normal user-creation checks. A typo in a table name, user ID, or serialized value can leave the account unable to log in or grant privileges to the wrong account.

- Back up the database before changing any rows. If your hosting control panel offers a database export, save a fresh export somewhere you can access if the change needs to be reversed.
- Make sure you have access to the correct database and site. A hosting account may contain several databases or WordPress installations.
- Have a temporary username, email address, and password ready. Do not reuse credentials from another account.
This guide covers a standard WordPress site. A multisite network has a separate super-admin mechanism; adding an administrator through wp_usermeta does not, by itself, make that account a network super admin.
Find the correct WordPress tables and prefix
Open the site’s database in phpMyAdmin and identify its WordPress tables. The default table prefix is wp_, but the actual prefix is configured in the site’s wp-config.php file as $table_prefix. For example, if the prefix is site7_, the relevant tables are site7_users and site7_usermeta, and the capabilities metadata key is site7_capabilities.

Use the same prefix consistently. Do not assume that seeing a table named wp_users in another installation means it is the right table for this site. The role definitions are stored in the prefixed options table under the serialized user_roles option; individual users’ capabilities are stored in the prefixed usermeta table.
Add the account to the users table
In phpMyAdmin, open the correct prefixed users table and choose Insert. Fill in the account fields below. The precise presentation of fields and function selectors can vary by phpMyAdmin version and hosting setup.

Save the row and note the exact ID assigned to the account. You will need that number in the next step. If phpMyAdmin or the table assigns IDs automatically, confirm the saved row’s actual ID rather than guessing it.
Password handling needs care
The tutorials reviewed for this procedure recommend entering the password and selecting MD5 in phpMyAdmin’s function selector. However, the available material does not verify that this works as expected with current WordPress releases or establish whether WordPress will accept the resulting value without requiring a reset. Treat the MD5 instruction as a tutorial convention, not a current-version guarantee. Use a temporary password, attempt sign-in only after completing the usermeta step, and replace it promptly through WordPress if you regain access. If login fails, do not keep making speculative database edits; use an authorized password-reset or recovery route.

Give the account the administrator capability
Open the same site’s prefixed usermeta table and choose Insert. Create a row with these values:

Some tutorials use s:1:"1" in place of b:1 for the final value. The sources reviewed disagree on that detail, and recommend the boolean form shown above. If you are repairing an existing installation with an unusual configuration, compare the value with a known-good administrator row from that same site before changing anything.
Optional legacy user level
Some guides also add a second usermeta row with meta_key set to the prefixed user_level key (for example, wp_user_level) and meta_value set to 10. This key is described as deprecated since WordPress 3.0, so it is optional rather than a substitute for the capabilities row. The sources do not establish that current WordPress versions or plugins require it.

Sign in and verify the account
- Go to the site’s normal WordPress login page and sign in with the new
user_loginand temporary password. - In the dashboard, open Users and confirm the account appears with the Administrator role.
- Check the dashboard areas you need to manage, including Tools, to confirm the account has the expected access.
- Change the temporary password through WordPress as soon as you can. Review the user list, remove accounts you do not recognize, and update any credentials that may have been exposed during the lockout.
WordPress roles and capabilities determine what an account can do. For plugin and theme code, the capability check current_user_can() is the appropriate way to test access; code should not rely only on comparing a user’s role name.
If this is a multisite network
Do not treat a site-level Administrator role as equivalent to a network super admin. In multisite, super-admin status is handled separately through the site_admins option in the network’s sitemeta table, not solely through the user’s capabilities row. The procedure here does not grant network super-admin status. Use the network’s authorized recovery process if that is the access you need.
