Spiders provide string and spider eyes. A player or tamed wolf must make the kill for the listed drops, and Looting improves spider-eye output, although published percentages disagree. Cave-spider spawners in abandoned mineshafts are the usual starting point for a spider-eye farm; test the exact light and Looting behavior in your edition because the available community references are not version-tagged consistently.

- Temperament: neutral until the local light is low enough, then aggressive.
- Trigger: light level, not sunrise or sunset. A spider in a dark cave can remain hostile during the daytime.
- Attack: it jumps toward the player and bites rather than following a simple ground path.
- Movement: it climbs vertical surfaces, including walls and fences.
- Drops: string and spider eyes are the relevant drops from ordinary spiders; cave spiders provide string and a chance at an eye.
- Farm choice: cave-spider spawners in mineshafts are generally the practical option when spider eyes are the priority.
Why a spider may not attack during the day
Daylight outside does not automatically make every spider passive. The game checks the light around the mob. A spider in a shaded cave, enclosed room, tunnel or farm can still be in its hostile state even when the surface is bright. Conversely, a spider that has wandered into a sufficiently bright area may ignore you until it returns to darkness.
Light is the important variable
Community references do not agree on one universal threshold. One guide lists spiders as neutral at light level 12 or higher and hostile at 11 or lower. A separate cave-spider reference lists neutrality in daylight or at light level 9 or higher. These figures may reflect different editions, versions or interpretations, so treat them as test targets rather than permanent rules.

| Reference claim | Neutral condition | Hostile condition | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| ExitLag spider guide | Light level 12 or higher | Light level 11 or lower | Useful as a starting hypothesis for ordinary spiders. |
| Fandom cave-spider page | Daylight or light level 9 or higher | Below that condition | Useful as a cave-spider comparison, not a guarantee for every edition. |
If behavior matters for a build, place or remove light sources in controlled steps and observe the mob in the edition and version you actually play. Do not design a farm around a single number until it works in that world.
Common reasons a daytime spider is passive
- It has moved into an area that is bright enough for neutrality.
- It is outside the dark section of your cave or farm.
- Your edition applies a threshold different from the one used by the guide you followed.
- You are observing a cave spider under conditions described for ordinary spiders, or vice versa.
Common reasons a daytime spider is still hostile
- The spider is under a roof, in a tunnel or behind terrain that keeps the local light low.
- The farm chamber is intentionally dark to allow spawning.
- Light from the sky is blocked even though it is daytime outside.
Spider versus cave spider
Both mobs are useful for string and spider-eye production, but their farming sources differ. The most important practical distinction is that cave spiders are associated with controllable mineshaft spawners, while ordinary spider farms commonly rely on dungeon or other prepared dark spawning spaces.

What spiders drop
String and spider eyes
Community guides consistently list string and spider eyes for spiders. The practical interpretation is a loot pool, not a guaranteed bundle from every kill. A kill can produce one resource, the other, both, or neither depending on the mob and the game’s drop rules.
For cave spiders, the commonly cited table gives 0 to 2 string and a spider-eye chance when the mob is killed by a player or a tamed wolf. That wording matters: an environmental death, a fall or another non-qualifying cause should not be treated as equivalent to a player kill when you are calculating farm output.

Who must make the kill?
Use a player attack or a tamed wolf if you want the listed spider-eye and string behavior. If a farm uses a damage mechanism that kills the mob without credit going to the player or a tamed wolf, verify the result in your edition before investing in a large collection system. Community guides specifically qualify the cave-spider drops by the killer, and the same caution applies when interpreting ordinary-spider tests.
Does Looting increase spider-eye drops?
Yes, the available references agree on the direction: Looting is intended to improve spider-eye output. They do not agree on one percentage for each level, especially Looting III. You should therefore use a current, edition-specific in-game test or current technical reference before promising a precise rate.
| Claim | Reported result | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ExitLag guide | 33.33% chance without Looting; up to 88.89% with Looting III | Year and game version are not stated. |
| Minecraft Wiki video/page summary | Looting III raises the chance to about 66% | Conflicts with the 88.89% figure. |
| Beebom guide | Looting III gives about 66.67% | Also conflicts with the higher figure. |
| Fandom spider-eye formula | No-eye chance = 2 ÷ (Looting level + 3) | At Looting III this implies a one-third no-eye chance, or about 66.67% for an eye. |
| Minecraft Wiki drop-table summary | No-eye chances of 1/3, 1/6 and 1/9 for Looting I, II and III | The Looting III line implies about 88.89%; it has not been independently reconciled with the other figures. |
Because these claims cannot all describe the same rule, avoid advertising a farm as producing a fixed percentage of eyes per kill. Compare rates only after testing the exact edition, version and sword enchantment you use.
How to get spider eyes without a full farm
- Find a spider in a dark area. A cave, enclosed room or other low-light location is more likely to produce the hostile behavior needed for a controlled kill.
- Let the player deliver the final hit. This preserves the player-kill condition cited for the drop table.
- Use a Looting weapon when available. Looting should raise eye output, but do not rely on a disputed percentage.
- Collect every drop over several kills. One kill is not a meaningful rate test because the loot pool is probabilistic.
- Switch to a spawner farm when demand grows. A naturally encountered spider is adequate for occasional brewing or crafting needs; sustained supply justifies a controlled chamber.
Why cave-spider farms are usually preferred for eyes
Cave spiders spawn from spawners found in abandoned mineshafts. That gives you a fixed source that can be secured, enclosed and routed to one kill point. Community farming guides commonly recommend this approach specifically for spider eyes because the spawner’s location can be controlled once discovered.

Ordinary spider spawners in dungeons and cobweb-filled rooms can also support a farm. Choose the source you can reach safely and contain; a nearby, reliable spawner is more valuable than an ideal design that is far away or difficult to protect.
How to build a cave-spider farm
The following design is deliberately adaptable. Exact room sizes, light thresholds and collection rates vary by edition and version, so build a small test installation before expanding it.
1. Locate and secure the mineshaft spawner
- Explore an abandoned mineshaft and identify the cave-spider spawner room.
- Mark the route back to your base and light nearby tunnels so unrelated hostile mobs do not occupy the work area while you build.
- Keep the spawner chamber itself in the dark condition required by your observed version. Do not assume that a torch placement that works for one edition will work identically in another.
- Clear enough surrounding space to move, fight and place blocks without breaking the spawner or trapping yourself.
2. Enclose the climbing mob
Spiders can climb walls and fences, so an open pen is not sufficient. Build a complete enclosure around the chamber, close ceiling gaps and inspect corners where a climbing mob could reach a ledge or escape route. Use a temporary roof while working and replace it with a permanent seal before activating the farm.
Do not leave a single-block opening for collection unless you have verified that spiders cannot climb through or around it. Their wall-climbing behavior is the reason many otherwise functional designs spill mobs into the mine.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
3. Create a controlled meeting point
Route the spawned spiders toward a place where you can attack them safely. The route can use the terrain and blocks already available in the mineshaft, but it must keep the mobs from climbing back into the chamber or reaching the player from an unexpected side. A narrow, sealed approach is easier to test than a broad room.

4. Preserve player-kill credit
Stand at the kill point and make the final attacks yourself, preferably with Looting. If you plan to use a tamed wolf, confirm that the wolf remains yours and that the resulting drops match your edition’s behavior. Do not assume an automated damage loop will produce the same string and eye results.
5. Add collection only after the kill works
First prove that spiders arrive, remain contained and can be killed safely. Then add hoppers, chests or another collection method appropriate to your build. Separating the combat test from the storage build makes it easier to identify whether a problem is caused by spawning, escape, killing or item pickup.
6. Measure before expanding
Record the number of kills and the string and eye totals over a meaningful sample. Label the test with your edition, version, Looting level and killing method. This will tell you more about your world than a percentage copied from a guide that does not identify its version.

Building an ordinary spider farm
Use the same principles when working with a dungeon spawner or another prepared dark room: keep the spawning area at the light condition that works in your edition, seal all vertical surfaces, guide mobs to one safe attack position and make the player or a tamed wolf responsible for the final hit.
A dungeon or cobweb room may be easier to reach than a mineshaft spawner, but it can provide less convenient space for routing and containment. Inspect the whole room before committing to construction. Any connected tunnel, fence line or ceiling gap can become a climbing escape route.
Farm troubleshooting
No spiders are appearing
- Check that the spawner room is dark enough for your edition’s observed behavior.
- Remove light sources that accidentally brighten the spawning area, while keeping the surrounding work route safe.
- Confirm that the spawner has not been destroyed and that you are close enough for it to operate in your edition.
- Look for other mobs or obstructions occupying the chamber.
Spiders appear but escape
- Inspect every wall, fence, corner and ceiling edge for a climbable path.
- Close maintenance openings before testing production.
- Move the kill point farther from the chamber if mobs can climb back toward you.
The farm produces string but few eyes
- Increase the sample size before judging the farm; eyes are a chance-based drop.
- Verify that the player or a tamed wolf is making the qualifying kill.
- Use Looting if available, but record the actual rate rather than relying on a disputed published percentage.
- Check that you are farming cave spiders or spiders as intended; their source and drop descriptions are not identical.
The spider’s daytime behavior seems inconsistent
Measure the local light instead of the time shown by the sky. The references disagree on the threshold, and a shaded daytime chamber can remain hostile while a nearby exposed spider is neutral. Treat each edition and version as a separate test case.
Choosing the right approach
| Your goal | Recommended approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A few spider eyes for immediate use | Kill hostile spiders manually with Looting if possible. | Fastest setup and no construction overhead. |
| Regular eye supply | Secure a cave-spider mineshaft spawner. | The spawner provides a fixed source that can be routed and enclosed. |
| Mostly string | Use whichever spider or cave-spider source is safest and closest. | Both are useful string sources, and convenience matters more than the disputed eye percentages. |
| Automated collection | Build the enclosure and route first, then verify kill credit before adding storage. | Collection hardware cannot correct a spawning, containment or drop-credit problem. |
Version and edition cautions
The available behavior and drop references are community and wiki pages rather than a single version-tagged official table. The light thresholds and Looting percentages cited above are therefore provisional. Java and Bedrock players, and players on different releases, should verify the result in the world where the farm will run.
When documenting your own farm, note four details: edition, game version, spider type and killing method. Also record whether the chamber is exposed to sky light or enclosed. Those details explain many apparently contradictory reports without requiring you to assume that one guide is universally correct.

Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- Use local light, not the day-night cycle, to predict spider aggression.
- Expect wall and fence climbing, and seal the entire farm rather than relying on a simple pen.
- String and spider eyes are loot-pool results, not guaranteed drops from every kill.
- Player or tamed-wolf kills are the qualified method for the listed cave-spider drops.
- Looting improves spider-eye output, but published Looting III percentages conflict, so test your edition.
- Cave-spider spawners in abandoned mineshafts are the usual choice for a dedicated spider-eye farm.
