Choose the route that fits your access
All four routes ultimately assign the built-in admin role. The difference is where you enter the command and whether the change is immediate or tied to a restart.

If you have console access, use that first. It avoids editing a configuration file and is the simplest way to recover access on a new server.

What you should confirm before promoting anyone
Use the player’s actual account name
Replace PlayerName with the name Vintage Story uses for the account. Do not include angle brackets, quotation marks, or explanatory text. If the player has not joined yet, confirm the spelling from your server’s player or whitelist tools rather than guessing.
Check whether a whitelist is enabled
On a dedicated server that uses a whitelist, add the player to that whitelist before attempting to promote them. Some hosting guides describe the normal sequence as “whitelist first, then run /op from the console,” but the exact commands and panel controls vary. If the player is not allowed to connect, an administrator assignment may not be useful until the whitelist entry is present.
Check your game version’s command help
Command names and configuration layouts can change between Vintage Story versions. In the console or chat, run /help and look for the player-role command. Running /serverconfig with no arguments can also display the available server-configuration commands on builds that support it. Treat those outputs as authoritative for your installation.
Method 1: Add an admin from the server console
This is the preferred method when you are setting up a new server or have lost in-game administrative access.
- Open the dedicated-server console. A hosting panel may label this control Console, while a self-hosted installation may expose the server’s terminal window.
- Enter the shortcut
/op PlayerName, replacingPlayerNamewith the exact account name, and submit it. - If the server reports that
/opis unknown or invalid, run/helpand use the full role command:/player PlayerName role admin. - Read the console response. A success message should identify the player or the role change. An error means the command was not accepted; do not assume the promotion happened.
- Have the player reconnect if the server or client does not immediately refresh the available commands. Then test one administrator-only action with the player.
Hosting references describe /op PlayerName as a shortcut for /player PlayerName role admin. The official wiki material confirms the /player role route but does not establish that /op is present in every build, which is why checking /help matters.

When the player is not currently online
Whether an offline account can be assigned a role depends on how the server identifies stored players in your version. Start with the console’s help output and the exact name shown by your player-management or whitelist tools. If the command cannot resolve an offline name, have the player join once and repeat the role assignment from the console.
Method 2: Promote a player from in-game chat
This route requires an administrator who already has permission to manage roles. It cannot be used by a newly joined survival player, because the starting suplayer role cannot grant privileges.
- Join the server with an account that is already an administrator.
- Open the normal in-game chat input.
- Enter
/player PlayerName role admin, using the target player’s exact account name. - Submit the command and check the response for confirmation or an error.
- Ask the promoted player to run an administrator-only command, or have them reconnect if their command list has not refreshed.
If your build documents an /op alias in /help, /op PlayerName may work in chat as well. The full /player form is the safer fallback when the alias is unavailable.
Method 3: Set an administrator in serverconfig.json
Editing the configuration is useful when nobody can access the console or when you want a command to run automatically during startup. It requires more care than a one-time console command.
Stop the server and make a backup
- Shut down the server cleanly. Do not edit a live file while the server is writing its configuration.
- Make a copy of
serverconfig.jsonbefore changing it. Keep the backup outside the active configuration folder so it cannot be mistaken for the live file. - Open the file in a text editor that preserves plain text and JSON punctuation.
Find the StartupCommands setting
Locate the existing StartupCommands entry. The precise JSON type and surrounding layout can differ by game version, so preserve the format already used in your file. Do not replace an array with a string, or a string with an array, merely because an example from another release looks different.

Insert the administrator command in the form your file expects. A single startup command is commonly represented with the equivalent of /op PlayerName. One hosting guide describes multiple commands as being separated by the two-character newline escape n, with no spaces around that separator. Follow the syntax shown by your host or by the existing file rather than copying a format blindly.
Validate and save the JSON
- Keep quotation marks, commas, brackets, and braces balanced.
- Do not add comments inside the JSON file.
- Do not leave a trailing comma where the JSON format does not allow one.
- Keep the player name and command on the value side of the setting, not outside the JSON structure.
A malformed line can stop the server from booting. If the server fails to start after the edit, restore the backup, start the server, and then reapply a smaller change while comparing every punctuation mark.
Restart before testing
Save the file, close the editor, and launch the server again. Changes to serverconfig.json do not take effect until the server is relaunched. Watch the startup console for JSON or command errors. Once the server is running, connect with the target account and test the new privileges.
Because a startup command is evaluated at launch, leave it in the file only if you intentionally want it to run on later launches. For a one-time bootstrap promotion, remove the command after confirming the role and restart again, taking care not to disturb the rest of the configuration.

The admin role
Vintage Story stores named roles in the Roles array in serverconfig.json. The built-in admin role has privilege level 99999 and includes every privilege, including the ability to grant administrator access to other players. Assigning this role is therefore a complete server-control decision, not merely a chat or moderation permission.

The starting suplayer role
Players do not become administrators automatically. A new server has no first-player-owner rule. New players start with the suplayer role, which cannot manage privileges, so the first promotion must come from the server console, a configuration edit, or another account that has already been made administrator.
Individual privileges versus a role
The /player command can grant one additional privilege without changing a player’s role. Individual player privileges stack on top of the permissions supplied by the role. Use that narrower mechanism when someone needs one capability but should not receive the all-privilege admin role. Your build’s /help output should show the exact grant syntax and available privilege names.
Verify that the promotion worked
A command being accepted by the console is not enough if the wrong account name was entered. Use a short verification sequence:

- Check the console response immediately after the role command.
- Have the target player reconnect if their client still behaves like a normal player.
- Ask them to run a command that requires administrator access, using a low-impact test appropriate for your server.
- If the test fails, run
/helpfrom the same context and confirm that the command syntax belongs to your version. - Check that you edited the active server’s console or configuration file, especially when several worlds or instances are hosted on the same machine.
A successful role assignment should not require changing the player’s character, inventory, world, or save data.

“Unknown command” for /op
The /op shortcut is documented by several hosting guides but is not confirmed for every Vintage Story build. Run /help and use /player PlayerName role admin if the full command is listed. Do not keep retrying an alias that your server does not recognize.

“No permission” when an existing admin tries to promote someone
The account issuing the command may not actually have the admin role, or it may have a custom role without privilege-management rights. Use the server console to perform the promotion, then inspect the role setup in serverconfig.json if the problem affects multiple administrators.
The player cannot be found
Recheck capitalization and spelling, remove any angle brackets from the example syntax, and confirm that you are targeting the account name rather than a character nickname. If the player has never joined, let them connect once or use the server’s documented player-management command to identify the stored name.
The configuration edit prevents startup
Stop trying additional edits on the broken file. Restore the backup, start the server to confirm recovery, and then re-edit only the StartupCommands value. Check quotation marks, commas, escaped newlines, and the setting’s original data type. A syntax error anywhere in the JSON can block startup even when the role command itself is correct.
The change disappears after a restart
A console assignment and a configuration assignment are different operations. If the player loses the role, verify that you edited the configuration for the correct server instance and that the file was saved before launch. If the startup command was removed after a one-time bootstrap, that is expected only if the role itself was persisted; otherwise repeat the assignment through the console and inspect the active role configuration.
The player can connect but still cannot use administrator commands
Confirm that the command named the intended account and that the server was restarted after a file-based change. Then check /help for the privilege required by the test command. A custom role or a single extra privilege is not equivalent to the all-privilege admin role.
Safer administration practices
Grant the full role sparingly
Because admin includes every privilege, assign it only to people who should be able to change server settings, manage players, and grant privileges themselves. For moderators or builders who need a limited capability, use an appropriate custom role or an individual privilege instead of full administrator access.

Protect the console and configuration file
Anyone who can execute commands in the server console or write to serverconfig.json can potentially make themselves or another account an administrator. Restrict panel logins, terminal access, and file-manager permissions to trusted operators. Keep a known-good configuration backup before making role changes.
Document who received access
Record the account name, date, route used, and reason for the promotion in your server’s private administration notes. This is especially helpful when several people share console access or when a startup command was added temporarily.
