It does not merge ownership between stores: a Steam or Battle.net entry can be launched and organized from the Xbox app, while the original storefront still controls the purchase license and often the installation and updates.
Use the instructions below to add a game, find it in My Library, manage its files and add-ons, and troubleshoot titles that do not appear. Menu names and storefront support change as the Windows app is updated, so use the visible equivalent when your build labels a control differently.

What the Xbox PC app can manage
On Windows, the Xbox app is a digital game hub. It brings together discovery, installation, launching and management for Xbox and PC Game Pass games, while also presenting installed games from supported third-party PC storefronts. Microsoft has described the app as a central place for purchased games, Game Pass, friends and games already installed elsewhere.
The distinction between a game the Xbox app owns and a game it merely lists matters when you are deciding where to install, update or repair it:

Microsoft reported in 2024 that nearly 400 previously undiscoverable or unpurchasable titles had been added to the Xbox app catalog. Catalog growth does not mean every game is installable from the Xbox app or that every PC store is supported in every release.
Before you add a game
Complete these checks before troubleshooting an install button or a missing library entry:
- Windows PC: The Xbox PC app is a Windows application. Keep Windows and the Xbox app updated so the current library and storefront integrations are available.
- Correct Microsoft account: Sign in with the account that owns the Xbox or Microsoft Store purchase, or the account that has the PC Game Pass entitlement. A different account can make a correctly purchased game look unavailable.
- Subscription status: A Game Pass title requires the relevant PC access on the signed-in account and remains subject to the title’s availability and requirements.
- Storage: Have enough free space on an available drive. The app may ask you to choose an install location before it begins downloading.
- Storefront client: For a game bought elsewhere, install and sign in to that storefront’s Windows client. The Xbox app can surface a supported installation, but it cannot transfer the license to Microsoft or replace the original client.
- App version and region: Layout, supported storefronts and management commands can differ by Windows build, Xbox app version, account type and region.
Install an Xbox or PC Game Pass title
These steps cover a game that the Xbox app can install directly. The same process applies whether you start from the catalog or from your subscription library.
- Open or update the Xbox app. Start the app from Windows and let it finish any available update. If it asks you to sign in, use the Microsoft account that owns the game or the PC Game Pass subscription.
- Choose a discovery route. Use Home for recommendations, Store for a purchased title, Game Pass for subscription games, or Library to check games already associated with your account.
- Open the game page. Select the title rather than its search suggestion alone. The page shows the entitlement and the actions available for your Windows version and account.
- Select Install. If the button is available, choose it to start the Windows installation. A title can show a different action when it is already installed, unavailable to your account, or requires another launcher.
- Choose the drive or folder when prompted. Select an available install location with sufficient free space. The exact picker and default location depend on your Windows and Xbox app configuration.
- Watch the queue. Keep the app open long enough to confirm that the download has started. The installation entry should move from queued or downloading to installed; a failed or paused item can expose a retry or resume action.
- Launch from the library. Open My Library or the installed-games view and select Play or the equivalent launch control.
If the title page offers Install but the operation fails immediately, check the account, available drive and Windows updates before trying again. If the page instead directs you to another launcher, follow that launcher’s installation flow; the Xbox app cannot override a title’s distribution requirements.

Find games in My Library
My Library is the practical starting point after installation. Open the library from the app navigation and look for the installed-games view, owned games or Game Pass filter available in your build. A game can be present in the library without being installed; use the title page to distinguish Install from Play.
Use Most Recent for quick access
The aggregated library can place a newly detected game in Most Recent. This is useful for a title installed through another client, but it is not proof that the Xbox app owns or updates that game. If the entry launches the original storefront, that behavior is expected.
Open the title’s game hub
Selecting a game can open its game hub rather than launching it immediately. Microsoft announced game hubs for all PC players in April 2024. Depending on the title and app release, a hub can expose progress, content and add-ons, friends, captures and developer news. These panels are contextual: a third-party entry may have a simpler launch card than a game installed directly through Xbox services.
Manage an installed game
From My Library or the installed-games view, open the game’s context menu, details page or management command. The exact wording varies by title and app version, but available actions can include the following:

- View details: Open the game hub, product page or installation information.
- Manage content and add-ons: Review downloadable content and optional components offered for that title.
- Check for updates: Start an update when the app exposes a title-specific update command. For a third-party game, the original storefront may still be the authority for updates.
- Repair: Use a repair command when the app offers one and the installation is damaged or will not launch. Repair can validate or restore files without removing the whole title, but the exact behavior is title-specific.
- Move: Change the installation drive or location when the title and Windows permissions support it. The command may be absent for some games.
- Uninstall: Remove an Xbox-managed installation from Windows. Confirm that you have the account access and download capacity needed before deleting a large title.
Do not assume that a command shown for one game is available for every game. Distribution technology, add-ons, permissions and the originating storefront determine the management menu.
Move a game to another drive
- Open My Library and locate the installed title.
- Open its context menu or management page.
- Choose Move if that command is offered.
- Select an available destination drive or folder and confirm.
- Wait for the move to finish before launching the game or disconnecting either drive.
If Move is not shown, use the title’s supported reinstall or storage-management route instead of manually dragging protected game folders. Manually moving files can break permissions or leave the Xbox app pointing to the old location.
Remove a game without losing the entitlement
Uninstalling an Xbox, Microsoft Store or Game Pass game removes its local files; it does not normally erase the purchase or subscription right tied to your Microsoft account. You can return to the title page and install it again while the entitlement remains valid. Save data and cloud behavior are title-dependent, so check the game’s own settings before deleting a game when local saves are important.

The Xbox app’s aggregated-library design can show games installed through Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net and other leading PC storefronts. In a supported integration, installing a game through the original client can make it appear automatically in My Library and Most Recent.

Use the original storefront first
- Install the storefront’s current Windows client and sign in to the account that owns the game.
- Install the game through that client, using its own drive and library controls.
- Open or refresh the Xbox app and check My Library and Most Recent.
- Select the detected entry to launch it. If the Xbox app hands control to the original client, leave that client installed and signed in.
This workflow creates a convenient launcher entry; it does not import the purchase into your Microsoft account, convert the game into a Game Pass title, or guarantee that Xbox-specific management commands will appear.
Enable a storefront under Library & Extensions
When a supported installation is missing, open the Xbox app’s profile or settings area and look for Library & Extensions. Use the storefront visibility control shown there to enable the relevant integration, then return to My Library and refresh or restart the app. Microsoft has described these controls as part of a continuing rollout, so the setting name, location and supported storefront list can differ by release.
Understand the limits of an aggregated entry
- Ownership: The original storefront remains the source of the license and purchase history.
- Installation: The Xbox app may launch the existing install, but the original client commonly performs the actual download, verification or patch.
- Updates: Check the original storefront when an Xbox library entry reports an outdated build or fails to update.
- Features: A third-party entry may provide only a launch tile, while a directly managed Xbox title can expose richer progress, add-on and management controls.
- Detection: Automatic appearance depends on supported integration, the app version and whether the installation is visible to the original client.
Use My Apps when it is available
Xbox Insiders have received a My Apps tab for locating, viewing and downloading third-party applications and commonly used storefronts. Treat this as preview functionality: it can appear in an Insider build before it reaches the general Xbox app, and the tab may be absent from your account or region. If you see it, use the storefront link to install the client, then manage the game from that client and let the Xbox app detect the installation when supported.
Why a game is missing from My Library
The game was purchased with another account
Sign out and sign back in with the Microsoft account used for the Xbox or Microsoft Store purchase. For PC Game Pass, confirm that the subscription is attached to the account currently signed in. A family member’s purchase or a different Windows account will not necessarily grant the same library view.

The game is installed through another storefront but not detected
- Open the original storefront and verify that the game is installed and launches there.
- In the Xbox app, open the profile or settings area and check Library & Extensions.
- Enable the storefront integration if it is listed, then restart or refresh the Xbox app.
- Update the Xbox app and the original storefront client.
- If the storefront is not listed, the integration may not be available in your build, region or account. Continue launching and updating the game through its original client.
The title appears but will not launch
First determine whether the entry is an Xbox-managed install or an aggregated shortcut. For the latter, open the originating storefront directly, verify that you are signed in, and try launching there. For an Xbox-managed title, use the available repair command, confirm the install drive is connected and check for an app or Windows update. The management options exposed by the Xbox app vary by title, so the absence of Repair, Move or Update is not itself an error.
The install button is unavailable
Check the entitlement shown on the title page, the Microsoft account, Game Pass status, Windows compatibility and available storage. Some catalog entries are discoverable without being purchasable or installable in every region or on every device. A title that requires another launcher will not necessarily expose a direct Xbox installation.
The library shows an old or duplicate entry
Open the game’s details to see whether one entry is the Xbox-managed version and another is a detected third-party installation. Keep the entry associated with the client that owns the game. If the app has a refresh or rescan control, use it after closing the original storefront; otherwise restart the Xbox app after the storefront has finished installing.

Keeping the app reliable as it changes
The Xbox PC app is updated frequently, and Microsoft’s storefront aggregation and game-hub features have rolled out over time. After a major Windows or Xbox app update, expect small changes to navigation and settings. Look for the same functional areas—Home, Store, Game Pass, My Library, profile or settings, and Library & Extensions—rather than relying on a fixed screen position.
For the most predictable setup, keep the Xbox app, Windows gaming components and every original storefront you use current; sign in to the account that owns each game; install directly from the client responsible for that game; and use the Xbox app as the unified library and launcher when the integration supports it. That division of responsibility prevents a library tile from being mistaken for a transferred license or a third-party game from being managed by the wrong client.
