How to Add Custom Clothes to a FiveM Server (Add-On Packs, YMT, and Shop Metadata)

To add custom clothes to a FiveM server, install the clothing pack as a resource: create a folder under resources, place a correctly named fxmanifest.lua at its root, put the streamed .ydd, .ytd, and usually .ymt files in stream/, register the shop metadata if the pack includes a .meta file, and add ensure resource_name to server.cfg. Restart the server, then use the console and a clothing menu to verify that the collection loads.

The file names are not cosmetic. The freemode ped, collection prefix, component, drawable number, texture suffix, and variation data must agree. A mismatch usually produces invisible clothing, missing textures, or a pack that never appears in a menu.

What a FiveM clothing pack actually contains

Custom clothing is streamed through FiveM’s resource system. It is not enough to copy image files into a random directory or place an archive beside the server executable. A resource is a self-contained folder that tells FiveM which game assets and scripts belong to it. Cfx.re’s documentation states: “Every resource is required to contain a resource manifest by the name of fxmanifest.lua defining what files/scripts are used as a resource.”

Most freemode clothing packs use several file types:

Not every pack has every file. A simple replacement may contain only streamed drawables and textures, while an add-on collection generally needs variation data and, when it is meant to show in a shop, a shop metadata file.

Add-on clothing

An add-on collection receives its own collection-prefixed names and extends the clothing available to the relevant freemode ped. It is the safer choice when you want independent items that should coexist with the base game and other collections. The pack’s names, indexes, and metadata must be designed together; renaming one file independently can break the collection.

Replacement clothing

A replacement reuses a base-game drawable name. The new model takes the place of an existing item, so no new collection registration is needed in the same way. This can be useful when you intentionally want to reskin a particular slot, but it can overwrite an original item and conflict with another replacement using the same name. Do not treat a replacement as an add-on by merely placing it in a different folder.

Check the pack before copying anything

Installation is straightforward only when the files were prepared for FiveM. Confirm the following before creating the resource:

• Asset type: The download should explicitly target FiveM or provide FiveM-ready files. Single-player or DLC archives may require extraction, conversion, or renaming before they can be streamed.
• License: Verify that your server is allowed to use, redistribute, and modify the pack. A technically valid file can still be unauthorized for a public server.
• Ped target: Identify whether the pack is for mp_m_freemode_01, mp_f_freemode_01, or both. A male collection will not automatically appear on a female freemode ped.
• Collection type: Determine whether the author supplied an add-on collection or a replacement. The naming and metadata workflow differs.
• Complete contents: Look for matching .ydd/.ytd pairs, a .ymt, and a shop .meta when the description promises store or menu integration.

Keep an untouched copy of the original download. If you later need to restore a file, compare against that copy rather than guessing which names were changed.

Create the resource in the correct location

FiveM scans resources beneath the server’s resources directory. A practical layout is:

resources/[clothes]/my_clothes/

The bracketed category folder is optional and only helps organization. my_clothes is the resource name used by the ensure command. Inside it, create the manifest at the top level and a stream directory for streamed assets:

Use the exact spelling fxmanifest.lua, including the extension. It must be directly inside my_clothes, not inside stream, a second nested folder, or the original archive directory. A manifest placed one level too deep makes the entire resource appear not to start.

Use a simple resource name

Choose a name with no spaces, such as my_clothes or mp_m_mypack. The name is referenced in server.cfg, so changing the folder name later requires changing the startup line as well. Avoid creating two resources with the same name in different category folders; that makes it unclear which copy the server is loading.

Put the drawable and texture files in stream/

FiveM streams files placed in a resource’s stream/ folder automatically. You do not normally list each .ydd or .ytd in the manifest. Copy them without changing their case, punctuation, or suffixes.

• The freemode ped and collection prefix identify the intended ped and collection.
• The component token, such as jbib, identifies the clothing slot.
• The drawable number, such as 000, identifies the model index within that component.
• The texture suffix identifies a particular texture variant, such as a_uni.

The .ydd supplies the model and the corresponding .ytd supplies its textures. If the model is named ...^jbib_000_u.ydd, its texture dictionary must use the matching collection, component, drawable, and texture naming convention. A texture dictionary with a different drawable number is not a valid pairing merely because it is in the same folder.

Keep texture variants together

A drawable can have multiple texture choices. The variation data and shop metadata must expose the same count that the texture files actually provide. If an item has three texture variants but the metadata describes one, a menu may show only one option or select an invalid texture. Conversely, a menu can offer an index for which no texture exists, resulting in a missing or purple appearance.

Add the variation and shop metadata

An add-on pack normally needs a ped-variation .ymt. Place that file in stream/ alongside the drawables and textures. Its collection and ped names must match the streamed files, and its drawable and texture entries must describe the same indexes present on disk.

If the pack includes a shop metadata file, put it where the manifest can register it, commonly at the resource root. Unlike streamed binary assets, the shop metadata is explicitly declared with a data-file entry. A minimal add-on manifest looks like this:

The files entry makes the metadata available to the resource, while data_file 'SHOP_PED_APPAREL_META_FILE' tells FiveM what kind of game data it is. Replace the example filename with the exact .meta filename supplied by the pack. A typo in either line prevents shop registration even when the .ydd and .ytd files stream correctly.

When a shop meta is necessary

Use the shop metadata when the clothing must appear in a clothing store, wardrobe, or menu that reads shop apparel collections. Some custom scripts can apply component and texture indexes directly and may not require a shop entry for basic testing. That does not make the .meta optional when the pack author supplied it as the mechanism for menu visibility. If the collection is absent from a menu but the resource starts, check this registration first.

Start the resource from server.cfg

Creating the folder does not start it. Add the resource name to the server configuration:

ensure my_clothes

ensure starts the resource during server startup and also starts it if it is stopped when the configuration is reloaded. The traditional start my_clothes command can also start a resource, but use one startup method consistently for this pack so that you do not create confusing duplicate state.

1. Save the resource folder under the server’s resources directory.
2. Confirm that fxmanifest.lua is at the resource root and that the resource name matches the folder name.
3. Add ensure my_clothes to server.cfg.
4. Restart the server, or reload the configuration using your normal administration method.
5. Watch the server console for a successful resource start and for manifest, file, or data-file errors.
6. Connect with the intended freemode ped and test the item through the clothing menu or the server’s direct component-selection command.

A resource that starts without errors has passed only the manifest stage. You still need to verify that the correct ped, collection, component, drawable, and texture indexes are usable in game.

Add-on versus replacement: choose before installation

Do not combine replacement packs that reuse the same base-game names unless you deliberately want the last-loaded resource to determine which model appears. For independent clothing, use a prepared add-on collection with its own prefix.

Make the pack work with a clothing menu

Streaming makes assets available to the game; it does not automatically add a button, category, or item label to every clothing script. Menu behavior depends on the server’s clothing framework. A shop-aware menu needs the collection’s shop metadata registered with SHOP_PED_APPAREL_META_FILE. A menu that applies raw component and texture indexes may need a separate configuration entry containing those indexes.

When a pack author supplies installation notes for a specific framework, follow those notes after the resource itself is working. Keep framework configuration separate from the asset resource where possible. That makes it easier to update the menu script without changing the binary clothing files and makes it clear whether a failure is in streaming or in menu integration.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The resource does not start

• Check that the file is named exactly fxmanifest.lua, not fxmanifest.lua.txt or __resource.lua.
• Move the manifest to the resource root. It cannot be only inside stream/ or an extra nested folder.
• Confirm that server.cfg uses the folder’s exact resource name: ensure my_clothes.
• Read the first console error after the resource start attempt. A syntax error in Lua or an incorrect data-file declaration must be fixed before client testing.

The clothing is invisible or the character shows a default item

• Verify that the player is using the freemode ped named by the pack. Clothing made for mp_m_freemode_01 will not display on a different ped model.
• Compare the collection prefix in the .ydd, .ytd, and .ymt. One character of difference creates a different collection.
• Check the component token and drawable number. A jacket placed under the wrong component or index will not be selected by the intended menu entry.
• Open the .ymt and confirm that it lists the same drawables and texture counts that are present in the stream folder.
• Remove or stop competing replacement resources while testing. Another resource may be overwriting the same base-game name.

The model appears but is purple, blank, or has missing textures

• Ensure every drawable has the matching texture dictionary. The model and texture names must agree on collection, component, drawable, and texture suffix.
• Check that the expected texture variant exists in the .ytd; a menu index with no corresponding texture cannot display correctly.
• Preserve the supplied file extensions and capitalization. Renaming a file to make it look tidier can break the asset relationship.
• Test one known-good drawable and texture pair first. If that pair works, add the remaining variants in small groups to identify a bad file.

The pack is absent from a clothing menu

• Confirm that the shop .meta is present and that its exact filename appears in both files {} and the SHOP_PED_APPAREL_META_FILE declaration.
• Check that the menu is designed to read shop apparel metadata. A raw component menu may require manual configuration instead.
• Verify the menu is showing the correct male or female freemode collection; collections are not interchangeable between ped genders.
• Restart the resource or server after changing metadata. A client that connected before the corrected collection loaded may still show the old state.

Two packs interfere with each other

• Look for replacement files that reuse the same base-game drawable names.
• Stop one pack at a time and reconnect to identify which resource owns the conflicting name.
• Prefer add-on collections with unique prefixes for new items.
• Do not merge files from unrelated collections into one .ymt unless the pack author has documented that structure.

Validate an installation before opening it to players

Use a controlled test rather than relying on a single successful server start:

1. Start with only the clothing resource and the menu or test command needed to apply an item.
2. Test the intended male and female freemode peds separately when the pack claims to support both.
3. For each component, select every supplied drawable and texture variant, not just the first item.
4. Check the character from several distances and after changing outfits; a bad drawable can fail only when the game rebuilds the ped variation.
5. Restart the server and repeat one selection to confirm that the result was not a stale client cache or a temporary menu state.
6. Review the console after the test and keep a note of any warnings tied to a particular filename or index.

If only some variants fail, the resource structure is probably correct and the problem is localized to naming, texture counts, or variation metadata. If every variant fails, return to the manifest location, startup line, ped target, and collection prefix before editing individual files.

Maintenance and safe updates

Keep each clothing collection in its own resource unless the author supplied a combined pack. Separate resources make it possible to stop one collection, identify conflicts, and roll back an update without affecting unrelated clothing.

When updating a pack, replace the complete set of files rather than copying only the new .ydd. A new model can depend on a changed .ytd, .ymt, or shop metadata file. Leaving old files in stream/ can expose stale drawables that the updated variation data does not describe.

Retain a text record of the resource name, the supported ped gender, whether it is add-on or replacement, and any menu indexes supplied by the author. This avoids rebuilding the mapping after a server migration. If you move the server, copy the entire resource folder and the matching ensure line, then test the collection before deleting the old copy.

Practical installation reference

For a standard add-on collection, the complete sequence is:

1. Obtain a FiveM-ready pack and confirm its license and ped target.
2. Create resources/[clothes]/my_clothes/.
3. Place fxmanifest.lua directly in my_clothes/.
4. Create stream/ and copy the supplied .ydd, .ytd, and .ymt files into it without renaming them.
5. Place the supplied shop .meta in the resource and register it with files {} plus SHOP_PED_APPAREL_META_FILE when menu visibility is required.
6. Add ensure my_clothes to server.cfg.
7. Restart, inspect console output, and test every intended drawable and texture variant on the correct freemode ped.

The essential distinction is between a streamed asset and the data that describes it. The .ydd and .ytd provide the visible model and textures, the .ymt tells the ped system how to vary them, and the shop metadata makes an add-on collection discoverable to menus that use apparel-shop data. When those layers use matching names and indexes and the resource is started with ensure, custom clothing can coexist cleanly with the rest of the server’s wardrobe.
