The most reliable way to light a LEGO Venice-style neighborhood is to divide it into zones: warm-white LEDs for rooms and shops, a smaller number of directional accents for façades, bridges, canals and signs, and a separate branch for streetlamps. Use a low-voltage 5V system with the power supply specified for that system, hide thin wires in brick channels and beneath plates, and build and test one finished building before repeating the pattern across the row.
Plan the display as lighting zones
A waterfront neighborhood looks more convincing when every light is not equally bright. Treat each building and landmark as a small electrical zone that can be tested, disconnected and serviced without dismantling the entire display. A practical layout separates the following functions.

| Zone | Purpose | Typical placement | Why keep it separate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interior rooms and shops | Provides the main warm glow | Behind windows, counters, stairwells and upper rooms | Interior brightness can be reduced without losing the street scene |
| Streetlamps | Defines the pedestrian route | Along quays, bridges, alleys and entrances | A separate branch makes it possible to turn the street scene on independently |
| Façade accents | Draws attention to architecture and signs | Under awnings, around lettering, at balconies and doorways | Directional light works best at a lower count than room lighting |
| Canal and landmark accents | Creates reflections and a focal point | Canal edges, bridge arches, boats and a prominent sign | Selective highlights prevent the waterway from becoming an over-bright strip |
Bring the branches to a common, accessible connection point at the rear of the display. A removable rear panel is useful: it conceals connectors during normal viewing but lets you unplug a building or replace a light without lifting the whole neighborhood.
Choose a lighting system that matches the project
There are three practical approaches in the supplied documentation. The right choice depends less on the number of bricks than on whether the neighborhood is already built and whether you expect it to expand.

| Brickstuff EasyLight | Parts are organized as power, light, connecting, adapter, expansion and specialty packs. Each Power Pack or Mini Power Pack includes the cables or adapter boards needed to connect up to four lights initially. The Smart Button guide describes independent brightness, on/off and random modes for groups. | A custom MOC that will grow or needs separate control of streets, building groups and houses |
| LEGO Powered Up Light 88005 | Two LED lights, a connecting wire and a connection point for LEGO Powered Up components | A display that already has a Powered Up hub and only needs a small number of compatible lights |
A complete kit reduces decisions about connectors and routing. A modular system is more adaptable when you expect to add another building, extend the canal or divide the scene into more independently controlled groups. The official LEGO module is convenient inside an existing Powered Up setup, while a standalone 5V hobby system generally gives a large custom neighborhood more wiring flexibility.
Use the correct power supply
Light My Bricks states that its lighting products run on 5 volts. Its documented power options include an AA battery pack, a USB-to-AA pack, a USB power bank and a universal wall adapter. Select the supply named for the particular kit rather than choosing by connector shape alone.
For the Italian Riviera 2.0 kit, the support guidance specifies a matched 5V/2.4A adapter or power bank. That figure applies to that kit’s guidance; it should not be treated as a universal rating for every lighting arrangement. A larger-voltage or uncertified supply can cause overheating, melting, smoking or fire, so do not substitute one because it is physically convenient.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm the required voltage and current on the kit documentation before connecting any branch.
- Keep the power entry reachable behind the display instead of sealing it inside a building.
- Use a certified supply and inspect plugs and wires for crushing before switching on.
- Disconnect power before changing a connector, moving a building or opening a rear panel.
- Do not force a connector into a socket that does not match its system.
Battery operation is useful for a temporary table display, while USB power or a wall adapter is more practical for a permanent neighborhood. Whichever source you use, plan a strain-relieved route so the cable cannot pull a building out of alignment.
Install lights in a completed neighborhood
You do not have to rebuild a Venice-style street from the foundation up. Light My Bricks documents a “Light After Build” method that uses minimal disassembly, removing only a few bricks at a time. The same style of installation works with any system whose wires are thin enough to pass through the available gaps.

- Photograph and label the scene. Take a rear and top photograph of every building before opening it. Mark each intended branch as interior, street, façade or landmark, and label both ends of every wire.
- Choose one test building. Pick a representative modular building with rooms, windows and a roof that can be removed. Do not start with the most complicated bridge or canal assembly.
- Mark the light positions. Place warm-white LEDs where a room would naturally glow. Add directional units only where a façade, sign or arch needs emphasis. Keep each light clear of moving doors, removable roof sections and transparent window elements.
- Open only the necessary layers. Remove a few bricks or a plate at a time, install the wire, then replace that layer before moving upward. This preserves alignment and prevents a long row of loose bricks from becoming a second problem.
- Seat the LED. Hold the light behind the window or under the ceiling so the diode faces the room rather than the viewer’s eyes. If a bright point is visible through a window, move it deeper into the room or diffuse it with the surrounding interior.
- Route toward the rear corner. Use an unused shaft, stairwell void or rear corner to take the wire vertically. Avoid routing across a façade where it could be visible through a window.
- Cross the base between buildings. Run the wire beneath plates or through existing gaps along the rear edge. Leave a small service loop at each building so the connector can be pulled out without stressing the LED.
- Connect the test branch. Attach the building to its intended power branch, switch on briefly and check every room before replacing the roof. Correcting a misplaced light now is easier than reopening a sealed model.
- Record the successful pattern. Note the number of lights, the route and the connector position. Repeat this wiring pattern on the next building, adapting only where the architecture requires it.
- Close and test again. Replace the final plates and roof, view the building from normal display distance, and confirm that no wire is pinched. Then move to the next zone.
Installation during construction follows the same sequence, except the channels and shafts are accessible as you build. If the neighborhood is already complete, the after-build method avoids the unnecessary disassembly that can damage decorative façades.
Hide wires without trapping them
Thin lighting wires can disappear into the geometry of a modular street if you plan their route before placing the LEDs. Light My Bricks says its wires are thin enough to tuck into LEGO brick channels. Use that property as a routing tool rather than trying to bury a bundle in a single tight gap.
Vertical routes inside buildings
Rear corners are usually less visible than front window bays. An unused chimney, service shaft or stairwell void can carry a wire from the roof to the base. Keep the wire flat against a wall and avoid pressing a sharp bend directly against the LED lead.
Horizontal routes beneath plates
At ground level, pass wires beneath plates between adjacent buildings. Route them along the rear edge where the street-facing side cannot reveal a shadow. Leave enough slack to lift one building for maintenance, but do not create a loop so large that it pushes plates upward.
Removable rear access
Reserve one rear panel or a removable row of plates for connectors. A hidden access panel is more useful than a perfectly sealed back because it lets you isolate a faulty building, replace a power pack or change the scene without dismantling the canal frontage.

Prevent visible hotspots
A diode placed directly against a transparent pane can look like a sharp white dot instead of a lit room. Recess it, aim it toward a wall or ceiling, and let the interior surfaces reflect the light. Test from the normal viewing distance, not only with your face close to the model.

Brickstuff’s modular-building guide gives a starting point of about three light strips, or six LEDs, per floor. Treat that as a baseline rather than a fixed specification. A narrow shop with one large window may need fewer lights, while a deep floor divided into several rooms may need more carefully placed sources.
- Start near the six-LED-per-floor baseline for a typical modular floor.
- Use fewer or dimmer sources in upper windows so the skyline does not become uniformly bright.
- Vary interior brightness from room to room; a dark stairwell beside a warm shop feels more natural than identical windows.
- Use directional accents sparingly on façades, bridge arches, canal edges and signs.
- Check the result with roofs and façades installed before committing to the final route.
Venice-style scenes benefit from contrast. Warm interiors can carry the visual weight, while a small number of lower-intensity accents suggest water, stone and signage. If every canal edge receives a light, the waterway loses its role as a dark separator between buildings.
Build independent branches and controls
Connect the interior, street and landmark branches separately whenever the system allows it. Independent branches let you create a daytime display with only interiors, a night scene with streetlamps, or a focal mode that highlights a bridge and canal without flooding the entire row.
Brickstuff’s Smart Button guide describes control of 100 lights or more in multiple modes. Its documented use divides a display into streetlamps, building groups and houses, with independent brightness, on/off and random modes. A small Venice neighborhood does not need that many lights to benefit from the same logic: assign one control group to the street, one to building interiors and one to special accents.

A practical branch layout
- Feed the main power connection to a rear distribution point.
- Connect the streetlamp branch first and verify that every lamp responds together.
- Add one building group at a time, keeping each group’s connector labeled.
- Put canal, bridge and sign accents on the final branch so they can be adjusted without reopening rooms.
- Secure excess cable behind the removable panel and leave a service loop at every building.
Brickstuff documentation says each Power Pack or Mini Power Pack can initially connect up to four lights with the included cables or adapter boards. Treat that as the starting capacity for that pack, then use the documented expansion parts when the display grows. Do not assume that adding more splitters automatically increases the safe load of a power source.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the scene before sealing roofs and façades
Testing is most effective in short cycles. Power one branch, inspect it from the front, turn it off, then move to the next branch. This isolates a wiring error before several buildings share the same symptom.
Expected results
- Every LED in the selected branch illuminates without flicker.
- Connectors remain cool and no wire is pinched beneath a plate.
- Windows show a soft interior glow rather than a single exposed diode.
- Streetlamps remain independent if they were assigned their own branch.
- The power entry and rear connectors remain reachable after the building is closed.
If one light is dark
Switch off the power, reseat the connector and inspect the route for a crushed wire. Test the dark light on the same known-good connection used by another LED. If the fault follows the light, the light or its lead is the likely problem; if the fault remains with the building position, inspect that branch and its connector.
If an entire building group is dark
Check the group’s connection at the rear distribution point, then test the branch with one building disconnected. A single damaged connector can interrupt a chain, while a disconnected branch leaves every downstream building unpowered.

If the scene is too bright
Reduce the affected branch or move the LED deeper into the room before adding more diffusion. Upper floors and canal accents usually need less intensity than ground-floor shops. Keep the streetlamp branch separate so lowering interior brightness does not erase the path through the neighborhood.

If a connector or cable becomes hot
Turn off the supply immediately. Check that the voltage matches the kit documentation and that no uncertified or higher-voltage adapter has been substituted. Inspect for a short, crushed wire or forced connector before powering the display again.
Expand the neighborhood without rewiring it
Design the first building as a repeatable module. Keep its rear connector in the same relative position as the next building, reserve a consistent path beneath the base plates and label the branch before adding the façade. This makes a new shop or apartment a plug-in task instead of a full street rebuild.
For a growing custom MOC, leave spare physical space at the rear distribution point and plan separate groups for future buildings. A modular power system is useful here because power, light, connecting, adapter, expansion and specialty parts can be added as the scene changes. The important limitation is electrical, not architectural: expand only within the documented capacity of the power pack and matched supply.

Final setup checklist
- Lighting is divided into interiors, streetlamps, façade accents and landmark accents.
- The selected system matches the display’s expansion and control needs.
- The power supply uses the exact voltage and rating specified for the chosen kit.
- Every building has been tested before its roof and façade were permanently closed.
- Wires run through rear corners, unused shafts or beneath plates rather than across visible façades.
- A removable rear panel provides access to connectors and the power entry.
- Interior brightness varies by room and floor, with upper windows generally more restrained.
- Streetlamps and special accents can be controlled independently where the system supports it.
- Service loops and labels make it possible to remove one building without disturbing the row.
- The completed scene has been viewed from its normal display distance in the intended lighting conditions.
The result should read as a neighborhood at night rather than a collection of illuminated bricks: warm rooms establish life inside the buildings, a restrained street branch traces the waterfront, and a few carefully aimed accents give the canal and architecture a focal rhythm.
