Use the instructions for your Outlook edition. In new Outlook for Windows, open Calendar, choose New event, and switch on Teams meeting. In classic Outlook for Windows, create a meeting and choose Teams Meeting from the Microsoft Teams Meeting add-in. New Outlook requires the same work or school account in Outlook and Teams, plus the new Teams client. Classic Outlook requires a supported Microsoft 365 Business Exchange setup, the Teams desktop app, and the COM add-in. Personal Outlook accounts and POP/IMAP mailboxes such as Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud are not supported for scheduling Teams meetings from Outlook.

Which Outlook edition are you using?

The menu you need depends on whether Windows is running new Outlook or classic Outlook. The two applications use different Teams integrations, so installing or enabling a COM add-in will not create a Teams toggle in new Outlook.

New Outlook uses the current event form and can also be opened through the Outlook web experience. Classic Outlook is the traditional Windows desktop program with the File, Home, and Meeting tabs described below. If you are unsure, open Calendar and look at the command for creating an appointment: New event indicates the newer event form, while the classic program uses a meeting window opened from the New Email dropdown.

What to check New Outlook for Windows Classic Outlook for Windows
How Teams is integrated Built-in Teams meeting toggle in the event form; no separate COM add-in for this control Microsoft Teams Meeting Add-in for Microsoft Office (a COM add-in)

If the control is missing Restart Teams and Outlook, then verify the account and Teams client Enable, re-enable, or reinstall the COM add-in

What do you need before adding Teams to Outlook?

Check the prerequisites before changing settings. A missing license, unsupported mailbox, or mismatched sign-in cannot be fixed by turning on an Outlook button. The requirements differ slightly by Outlook edition, but both workflows depend on a supported organizational identity.

  • New Outlook: sign in to Outlook and the new Teams client with the same work or school identity. The integration associates the calendar and Teams service through that shared account.
  • Classic Outlook: use a Microsoft 365 subscription that includes Teams, an assigned Teams license, a supported classic Outlook version on Windows, and the Teams desktop client installed on the same PC.
  • Classic account type: Outlook scheduling is supported with Microsoft 365 Business Exchange accounts. POP/IMAP accounts, including Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud mailboxes, are not supported for this Teams scheduling scenario.
  • Current components: keep Teams and Office properly installed and updated. The classic add-in runtime also depends on .NET Framework 4.8 and WebView2.
  • Commercial identity: Microsoft’s scheduling guidance says the Outlook add-in does not support creating meetings with a personal account.

Installing the Teams desktop app alone does not overcome an unsupported mailbox or missing license. Likewise, switching between new and classic Outlook does not convert a personal or POP/IMAP account into a supported Exchange account. If your organization manages Office centrally, an administrator may need to provide the subscription, Teams license, or supported Office installation before the meeting command can work.

How do I add Teams to one meeting in new Outlook?

New Outlook has Teams scheduling built into the event window. You do not install or manage the classic COM add-in for this workflow. The toggle belongs to the event itself, so you can choose Teams for one invitation without changing the default for every meeting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Outlook for desktop or the Outlook web experience.
  2. Select Calendar.
  3. Select New event.
  4. Next to the event title, turn on the Teams meeting toggle.
  5. Enter the subject, date, time, attendees, and any other details.
  6. Select Send. Teams join information is inserted when the invitation is sent; saving the event only as a draft does not add the join details.

After you send the invitation, recipients receive the Teams meeting information in the calendar invitation. The meeting remains an Outlook calendar event, while the Teams portion supplies the online join details. If you turn the toggle off before sending, the event is sent without Teams information.

What if the Teams meeting toggle is missing in new Outlook?

First confirm that Outlook and Teams are using the same work or school account and that you are running the new Teams client. Then re-establish the session in the order Microsoft recommends:

  1. Close Outlook completely.
  2. Use the Teams toolbar or system-tray icon to quit Teams.
  3. Start Teams and sign in with the account used in Outlook.
  4. After Teams finishes loading, start Outlook again and create a new event.

Check the account identity in both applications rather than assuming that the Windows sign-in is enough. A person can have several organizational accounts available in Teams; the calendar owner and the active Teams account must be the same work or school identity for the new-Outlook integration.

Because the control is integrated into new Outlook, looking for Microsoft Teams Meeting Add-in for Microsoft Office in the COM add-ins list will not restore a missing new-Outlook toggle. Resolve the account or client mismatch instead. The browser event form follows the same integrated model, so reinstalling a Windows COM package is not the appropriate fix there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I add Teams to one meeting in classic Outlook?

Classic Outlook uses the Teams Meeting add-in. When the supported Teams and Office components are installed together, Microsoft says the add-in should be installed automatically. You still need to choose the Teams command for each meeting unless you configure an online-meeting default.

  1. Open the classic Outlook desktop app.
  2. On the Home tab, open the dropdown next to New Email.
  3. Select Meeting.
  4. On the Meeting tab, open the dropdown beside Teams Meeting and choose Schedule meeting. In some Outlook views the command is labeled New Teams Meeting.
  5. Add the subject, time, attendees, and any notes. Teams join information appears in the invitation.
  6. Select Send to distribute the meeting invitation.

If the command is present, use it from the meeting window rather than creating a regular appointment and pasting a Teams link manually. The add-in inserts the meeting information in the invitation and keeps the event associated with the supported Teams account.

How do I enable a disabled Teams add-in?

Use Outlook’s add-in management screens to determine whether the component is active, disabled, or absent. An active entry confirms that Outlook has loaded the add-in; a disabled entry means Outlook knows about it but is preventing it from loading.

  1. In Outlook, select File > Options > Add-ins.
  2. Look for Microsoft Teams Meeting Add-in for Microsoft Office under Active Application Add-ins.
  3. If it appears under Disabled Application Add-ins, use the Manage menu at the bottom, choose COM Add-ins, and select Go.
  4. Select the Teams add-in checkbox, choose OK, and restart Outlook.

After restarting, open a new meeting and check the Meeting tab again. If the entry is not listed in either active or disabled add-ins, the package may not be installed correctly; use the reinstall procedure below instead of repeatedly changing the checkbox.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if Outlook disabled the add-in for performance?

Outlook can disable a COM add-in after performance monitoring. Open File > Manage COM Add-ins and choose Always enable this add-in when that option is offered. If it is not shown, use File > Options > Add-ins, set Manage to Disabled Items, select Go, enable Teams, and restart Outlook.

Do not confuse an Outlook performance disablement with an unsupported account. Re-enabling the component can restore the command only when the Office, Teams, license, and mailbox prerequisites are already satisfied.

How do I fix the Teams Meeting button after a Teams update?

A new Teams update can leave the classic add-in in a broken state. Microsoft’s documented recovery is to remove the add-in package and let new Teams install it again. This is different from merely checking the COM add-in box in Outlook.

  1. Right-click Start and open Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.
  2. Search for Teams Meeting Add-in and uninstall it.
  3. Close Outlook.
  4. Quit Teams from the system tray.
  5. Restart New Teams.
  6. Wait until Teams Meeting Add-in appears again in Installed Apps.
  7. Restart Outlook and check the Meeting tab.

Quit both applications before restarting Teams so Outlook is not holding the old add-in instance. Wait for the package to return to Installed Apps before reopening classic Outlook; opening Outlook too early can make it appear that the repair failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the package does not return, verify that Teams is installed for the same Windows user and that Office and Teams are current. Also check that .NET Framework 4.8 and WebView2 are present, since Microsoft identifies both as requirements for the classic add-in experience. If those components are controlled by your organization, contact the administrator rather than installing unrelated utilities.

How do I make every Outlook meeting a Teams meeting?

Both Outlook editions can add an online Teams meeting by default, but the setting is stored in different menus and must be applied to the correct account. This setting affects meetings you create; it does not retroactively add Teams details to invitations that were already sent.

New Outlook

  1. Open Calendar settings.
  2. Select Events and invitations.
  3. Under Events you create, enable Add online meeting to all meetings.
  4. Choose Microsoft Teams as the online-meeting provider.
  5. Save the setting.

If you have more than one account in Outlook, confirm that the account selected in Calendar settings is the one you use for invitations. Otherwise, the default can appear not to work even though it was saved for a different calendar.

Classic Outlook

  1. Select File > Options > Calendar.
  2. Enable Add online meeting to all meetings.
  3. Select Meeting Providers….
  4. Choose Microsoft Teams as the default provider.
  5. Select OK to save.

After saving, create a new meeting to test the setting. Existing meetings are not automatically rewritten, and a meeting created under an unsupported account still cannot use Outlook’s Teams scheduling integration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is the Teams Meeting button still missing?

Use the symptom that matches your Outlook edition rather than mixing the two recovery paths. New Outlook has an integrated control; classic Outlook has a separately managed COM add-in.

  • New Outlook shows no toggle: sign out of Teams, quit it, sign back in with the same work or school account as Outlook, and restart Outlook. Confirm you are using the new Teams client.
  • Classic Outlook shows no command at all: check the add-in list, enable it under COM Add-ins or Disabled Items, then restart Outlook.
  • The add-in vanished after an update: uninstall Teams Meeting Add-in from Installed Apps, quit both applications, restart new Teams, wait for reinstallation, and reopen Outlook.
  • The add-in is active but meetings still lack Teams details: verify that you selected the Teams command when creating the meeting and that the invitation was sent rather than left as a draft.
  • You are using a personal, POP, or IMAP mailbox: Outlook scheduling support does not cover that account type. A supported Microsoft 365 Business Exchange account is required for this workflow.
  • The add-in repeatedly disables itself: use File > Manage COM Add-ins to choose Always enable this add-in, then check the .NET Framework 4.8 and WebView2 prerequisites.
  • The add-in is not listed anywhere: close Outlook, quit Teams, restart new Teams, and check Installed Apps for the Teams Meeting Add-in. Its absence indicates an installation problem rather than a simple Outlook toggle.
  • You changed the default provider but nothing changed: make sure the setting was saved under the account that owns the calendar and test with a newly created meeting.

What is the practical difference between the two Outlook methods?

The result is the same—a calendar invitation containing Teams join details—but the integration and recovery steps are different. Choosing the right path saves time: a COM-add-in repair cannot create a missing new-Outlook toggle, while restarting Teams alone may not restore a disabled classic add-in.

Decision point New Outlook Classic Outlook
Setup Use the built-in toggle; no separate Teams COM add-in Use the installed Teams Meeting COM add-in
Identity requirement Same work or school account in Outlook and Teams Supported Microsoft 365 Business Exchange mailbox with a commercial Teams license
Primary recovery Quit and restart Teams, sign in again, then restart Outlook Enable the add-in, reverse an Outlook disablement, or reinstall the add-in
Default-meeting setting Calendar settings > Events and invitations File > Options > Calendar > Meeting Providers…
Personal or POP/IMAP mailbox Not supported for Outlook Teams scheduling Not supported for Outlook Teams scheduling

For a single event, the new-Outlook toggle is the shortest route. For classic Outlook, the Teams command depends on the add-in being installed, enabled, and compatible with the Office and Teams components on that computer. For recurring use, either edition can apply Teams automatically, but the default setting must be configured separately in each edition.

Can I schedule a Teams meeting from a personal Outlook account?

Not through Outlook’s Teams meeting integration. Microsoft explicitly states that the Outlook add-in does not support creating meetings with a personal account, and POP/IMAP mailboxes are also outside the supported scheduling scenario.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing the default online-meeting provider or reinstalling the add-in will not change that account limitation. Use a supported Microsoft 365 Business Exchange identity for Outlook-based scheduling. If your organization provides several accounts, select the supported business calendar when creating and sending the invitation.

Does Outlook on the web use the same Teams add-in?

No. The new Outlook event form, including the web experience, uses the integrated Teams meeting control rather than the classic Windows COM add-in. Therefore, COM-add-in repair steps apply to classic Outlook desktop, not to a missing toggle in the web event form.

Why do Teams details appear only after I send the invitation?

New Outlook adds the join information when the invitation is sent. An event saved only as a draft will not contain the Teams join details, so recipients cannot join until the meeting is sent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When testing, create a new event, turn on the Teams meeting option, add at least the intended attendees, and send it. Checking an unsent draft is not a reliable test of whether the integration is working.

What should I check if Outlook and Teams use different work accounts?

New Outlook expects the same work or school account in both applications. Sign out of Teams, start it again with the account that owns the Outlook calendar, and then reopen Outlook before testing a new event.

In classic Outlook, also confirm that the mailbox is the supported Microsoft 365 Business Exchange account and that Teams is signed in with a commercial account associated with the organization. Having Teams installed for another Windows user or being signed in to a different tenant can leave the add-in unavailable even when Outlook itself opens normally.

Can I add Teams to only selected meetings?

Yes. In new Outlook, leave the global default off and turn on Teams meeting only in events that need it. In classic Outlook, use the Teams Meeting command when creating the individual meeting. The all-meetings setting is optional and can be enabled later if most of your invitations are online.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the safest order for troubleshooting?

Start with identity and account support, then restart the relevant applications, and only afterward change add-in settings. For new Outlook, confirm the same work or school sign-in, quit and restart Teams, and reopen Outlook. For classic Outlook, confirm the supported Exchange mailbox and license, check whether the COM add-in is active or disabled, re-enable it if necessary, and reinstall the Teams Meeting Add-in after an update if the package is missing. This order avoids spending time repairing a component that cannot work with an unsupported account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I schedule a Teams meeting from a personal Outlook account?

No. Microsoft’s Outlook scheduling guidance excludes personal accounts, and POP/IMAP mailboxes are not supported for this integration. Reinstalling the add-in or changing the online-meeting provider does not remove that account restriction.

Does Outlook on the web need the Teams COM add-in?

No. The new Outlook web event form uses its integrated Teams meeting control. COM-add-in troubleshooting applies to classic Outlook for Windows, not to the browser-based event form.

Why are Teams join details missing from an Outlook draft?

New Outlook inserts the join information when you send the invitation. A draft can remain without Teams details until it is sent to attendees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if Outlook and Teams are signed in to different work accounts?

The new-Outlook Teams toggle may not appear because the integration expects the same work or school identity in both apps. Sign out of Teams, use the calendar owner’s account, and restart Outlook before creating the event.

How do I enable the Teams add-in in classic Outlook?

Open File > Options > Add-ins, locate Microsoft Teams Meeting Add-in for Microsoft Office, and use Manage > COM Add-ins > Go to select it. Choose OK and restart Outlook. If Outlook disabled it for performance, use File > Manage COM Add-ins or the Disabled Items manager to choose Always enable or enable Teams.

Why did the Teams Meeting button disappear after an update?

Uninstall Teams Meeting Add-in from Settings > Apps > Installed Apps, close Outlook, quit Teams, restart new Teams, wait for the add-in to be installed again, and then restart Outlook. Check .NET Framework 4.8 and WebView2 if the package does not return.

How can I make all new Outlook meetings use Teams?

In new Outlook, open Calendar settings > Events and invitations, enable Add online meeting to all meetings, choose Microsoft Teams, and save. In classic Outlook, use File > Options > Calendar, enable the same option, open Meeting Providers, select Microsoft Teams, and choose OK.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud mailboxes supported for Outlook Teams scheduling?

No. POP/IMAP mailboxes such as Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud are outside the supported Outlook scheduling scenario. A supported Microsoft 365 Business Exchange account is required.

The Bottom Line

In short: use the built-in Teams meeting toggle in new Outlook with the same work or school account signed in to Teams, or use the Teams Meeting COM add-in in classic Outlook with a supported Microsoft 365 Business Exchange account. If the control is missing, follow the recovery path for that edition—restart and reauthenticate for new Outlook; enable or reinstall the add-in for classic Outlook.
