Add an already-installed game or application to Steam Deck from Desktop Mode, then configure its controls from the title’s library page in Gaming Mode. Adding it creates a shortcut in Steam; it does not install the program, provide updates, or establish ownership.

Before you begin

The game or application must already be installed on the Deck or otherwise available there. Steam’s add-to-library process selects an existing program; it does not install one. As Steam explains, “This will only add a shortcut to your game in the Steam client.” Steam Support: Add Non-Steam Games to a Library

Compatibility depends on the application. Adding a shortcut does not guarantee that a game, installer, or launcher will run properly in SteamOS.

Add the game from Desktop Mode

  1. Switch to Desktop Mode. Press the Steam button, open Power, and choose Switch to Desktop.
  2. Open the Steam client. In Desktop Mode, find Steam and launch it if it is not already running.
  3. Open the add-game menu. Select Add a Game in the Steam client’s lower-left corner, then choose Add a Non-Steam Game. Depending on the client version, the equivalent menu may appear under Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library.
  4. Select the installed program. Choose it from the application list and add the selected program. If it is not listed, use the browse option to locate the program on the Deck, then add it.
  5. Return to Gaming Mode. Use the desktop’s Return to Gaming Mode shortcut. The new entry should be available in the library’s non-Steam section.

Desktop navigation does not require a dock, keyboard, or mouse. The Deck’s right trackpad moves the pointer, and clicking it performs a primary click; clicking the left trackpad performs a secondary click. With Steam running, press Steam + X to open the on-screen keyboard. Steam describes the desktop-input support in its Steam Deck and Steam Machine Desktop FAQ.

Set up the title’s controls

  1. In Gaming Mode, open the library’s non-Steam section and select the game or application.
  2. Open its game details and select the gamepad icon or control settings.
  3. Inspect the current layout. Edit it for the game’s inputs, or browse community layouts from the layout screen and select one to try.

Choose a layout based on what the title needs. A gamepad-first layout may suit a game designed for a controller; mouse-and-keyboard emulation can be more practical for a launcher or game that expects a cursor. Community layouts are options to test, not a guarantee that a layout will fit every game or setup. Steam outlines layout editing and community layouts in its Steam Deck Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide.

Troubleshoot launch and input problems

Check whether the application works in SteamOS

Steam advises checking that non-Steam applications support Arch Linux. A title may launch but still require mouse or touchscreen input in its launcher, or need adjustments to its controller setup. Adding it to Steam does not remove those compatibility or input requirements. See Steam’s Steam Deck Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide.

Try a compatibility tool only if needed

For a specific library entry, Steam lets you force a compatibility tool such as Proton in that entry’s properties. Treat this as a troubleshooting option, not a universal fix: it may help with some applications, while others may remain incompatible or unstable.

Optional: use a dock or USB-C hub

A dock or USB-C hub can connect a display, keyboard, mouse, controller, Ethernet, and power for a desktop-style setup, but none is required to add a library shortcut or change a layout. Match the hub’s ports and power pass-through to your peripherals, and check that your display, refresh-rate needs, and cables are compatible. Steam notes that various docks and hubs work with the Deck, while setup-specific display or cable limitations can apply: Steam Support: Docking the Steam Deck.
