Pokémon warns that counterfeit booster packs can be hard to spot, so a low price or convincing packaging is not proof of authenticity. If a card looks suspicious, a specialist trading-card shop can help assess it.
Choose the kind of Pokémon cards you want first
Individual cards and sealed products call for different checks. For a single card, scrutinize its condition, listing photos, description, seller history, and the route for disputing an item that is missing or not as described. For a sealed booster pack, pay particular attention to the packaging and price: Pokémon says fake packs can be difficult to distinguish from genuine ones.

Where to buy Pokémon cards online
Official retail channels
Pokémon Center Support identifies Pokémon Center, its automated retail vending machines, and limited-time deals with major retailers such as Target and GameStop as channels for its licensed items. It also says Pokémon TCG cards are distributed through existing mass-market retail partnerships. This is channel guidance, not a guarantee that every marketplace listing—or every seller on a marketplace—is authorized. Check who is actually selling and fulfilling the order. Pokémon Center Support

A marketplace can offer individual cards and a published process for handling problems, but protections depend on its current terms and the transaction. For example, TCGplayer’s Safeguard policy covers eligible orders that do not arrive or are not as described, including orders from Direct and marketplace sellers. For suspected counterfeits, it provides a separate claim process. That policy describes TCGplayer’s process; it does not establish that one marketplace is universally safest or that another lacks protection. TCGplayer Safeguard

Check the seller, listing, and price before paying
- Seller: Review the seller identity, transaction history, and feedback. Confirm whether the seller or the platform fulfills the order.
- Listing: Read the full description, including condition, set, language, shipping terms, and stated return or dispute options. Compare the photos with the item being offered rather than relying on a generic product image.
- Price: Treat a price far below a plausible retail reference as a reason to investigate. Pokémon specifically warns that a booster pack priced dramatically below suggested retail price is a serious warning sign; a discount alone does not prove a product is fake.
- Payment and communication: Prefer a payment method with a documented dispute process. Keep messages and payment on the marketplace when possible; taking them off-platform may remove protections tied to the original transaction.
ScamShield Singapore advises secure payment options and cautions against advance payments or direct bank transfers in its account of Pokémon-card pre-order scams. That warning is specific to the Singapore cases it describes, but it illustrates why a buyer should be cautious about paying a seller directly before receiving an order. ScamShield Singapore
How to assess a card or sealed pack
Individual cards
Pokémon says counterfeit cards are often see-through when held up to a bright light. Treat that as a clue, not a complete authentication test: the guidance does not establish that every counterfeit will show the same way or that passing the check proves a card is genuine. If a card seems suspect, Pokémon recommends asking a shop that specializes in trading cards to evaluate it. Pokémon Support: suspected counterfeit cards

Sealed products
Compare the packaging with official product images and check text, artwork, and logos. TCGplayer’s counterfeit guide also points to spelling or grammar errors, mismatched set references, and anime images as red flags; these are warning signs, not a standalone authentication guarantee. Pokémon cautions that fake booster packs can be very difficult to discern, so neither an intact wrapper nor a convincing image settles the question. TCGplayer: How to Spot Fake Pokémon Cards
What to do if an order is missing or looks wrong
- Save the evidence. Keep the listing, order number, payment record, seller messages, delivery details, and clear photos of the item and packaging.
- Contact the seller through the order page. Describe the problem and follow the marketplace’s official dispute route. Avoid resolving the issue through a separate payment or off-platform arrangement.
- Use the platform’s specific counterfeit process if applicable. TCGplayer instructs buyers with suspected counterfeit cards to submit a counterfeit claim and send the card for review. It says confirmed counterfeits receive a full refund.
- Watch the deadline. TCGplayer’s policy says eligible missing-item and not-as-described claims should be raised within 30 calendar days after the estimated delivery date, and recommends contacting support within 48 hours of identifying a problem. These are TCGplayer policy details, not universal marketplace deadlines; check the current policy and act promptly.
- Decline extra off-transaction charges. TCGplayer says sellers may not request additional payment after a completed transaction because the market price changed. Use the platform’s support process instead.
How common are Pokémon-card scams?
ScamShield Singapore reported in a January 2, 2026 bulletin that at least S$958,000 had been lost since October 2025 to e-commerce scams involving Pokémon trading-card sales in Singapore. That figure is geographically and temporally specific; it is not a global estimate. The reviewed official guidance does not establish a broad prevalence rate for counterfeit Pokémon cards.
