To add someone in League of Legends, open the game client’s social area, choose Add Friends, and search for their complete Riot ID, including the part after the #. A Riot ID looks like GameName#tagline; it is not the private username used to sign in.
What you need before sending a friend request
Ask the player for their complete Riot ID in the format GameName#tagline. Riot describes this as the public identifier friends use to find a player; the sign-in username is separate and private. See Riot’s Managing Your Riot Account and Riot ID FAQ.
Add the player in the League client
- Open League of Legends and go to the social or friends area of the client.
- Select Add Friends.
- Enter the other player’s full Riot ID, including the tagline after
#, then send the request using the client’s add-friend flow. - The other player may need to accept the request before they appear as your friend.
Riot’s support documentation confirms the Add Friends entry point, but does not establish the exact labels in the ordinary request dialog. Those labels may differ from the wording above.
If you can’t find the player
- Check the spelling of the Game Name and tagline, including the characters after
#. - Confirm you are using the player’s Riot ID, not their private sign-in username.
Optional: add mutual Discord friends
Riot also describes a Discord-linking option that can surface mutual Discord friends as Riot friends through the game client. It is a convenience, not a requirement for sending a normal friend request. Riot says linking is available through the Discord app on PC and Mac, and that League support depends on both Riot and Discord being supported in the relevant locale. The integrated list requires an existing Riot ID, a formal Discord friend connection, and linked Riot and Discord accounts. Details are in Riot’s Riot and Discord account-linking guide.

In that Discord integration discussion, Riot states a maximum capacity of 375 for the integrated friends list. That figure applies to the integration context and should not be taken as a universal limit for every League friends list.
