To add text effects to WordArt, select the WordArt letters, open the contextual Shape Format tab (called Drawing Tools Format in some older editions), and use Text Fill, Text Outline, or Text Effects. The Text Effects menu contains Shadow, Reflection, Glow, Bevel, 3-D Rotation, and Transform commands for curved or warped text. WordArt is created from Insert > WordArt in desktop Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; Microsoft 365 for the web can display existing WordArt but requires the desktop app to create new WordArt.

This guide explains the exact workflow, what each control changes, how to curve or rotate lettering, how to remove effects, and how to fix the most common selection and formatting problems.

How do I insert WordArt before adding effects?

Start in the desktop version of Word, PowerPoint, or Excel. WordArt is an object with its own text-formatting controls, so you must insert or select that object before the effect commands become available. The browser version can show WordArt that is already in a document, but it does not provide the documented command for creating a new WordArt object.

Word and PowerPoint

  1. Place the cursor where the WordArt should appear, or click an existing text selection in Word if you want to convert that text.
  2. Choose Insert > WordArt.
  3. Select a gallery style. Office inserts a WordArt object with the placeholder text Your text here highlighted.
  4. Type the replacement wording. If you converted selected text in Word, the selected wording becomes the WordArt content.

You can begin with a gallery style even if you intend to redesign it. The gallery choice gives you a WordArt object; the later fill, outline, effect, and Transform controls determine the final appearance.

Excel

Excel’s documented workflow starts with a text box. Choose Insert > Text Box, draw or place the box, type the text, and then follow the WordArt formatting steps. Select the text or object before opening the formatting controls. This extra text-box step is the main difference in the documented Excel sequence.

Which Office versions support this workflow?

Microsoft’s support instructions cover Microsoft 365, Office 2024, Office 2021, and earlier desktop editions on Windows and macOS. Button names can vary slightly by edition; for example, older layouts may show Drawing Tools Format instead of Shape Format. The commands may be arranged differently, but the functions remain grouped around WordArt Styles and Text Effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check before formatting?

Confirm that you are working in a desktop application and that the object is actually WordArt or a text box carrying the WordArt formatting controls. A normal paragraph, a regular shape, and a picture do not expose the same controls. If the document is open in a browser, use the command to open or edit it in the desktop application before trying to insert another object.

Decide whether you want to style the characters, alter the text path, or turn the whole object. This prevents a common mistake: applying a shape preset when the desired change concerns the letters. Character styling uses Text Fill, Text Outline, and Text Effects; movement and flipping use the object-level Arrange > Rotate commands.

How do I show the controls for WordArt text effects?

Select the letters or click inside the WordArt text. Office then displays the contextual Shape Format tab. If you only see the regular Home, Insert, or other tabs, double-click the WordArt or select it once and then click into its text.

Selection state matters:

  • A solid border around the object means the entire WordArt object is selected. This is the state used for moving, resizing, rotating, and deleting the object.
  • A dashed border indicates text editing. This lets you place the insertion point, select individual letters, and apply font changes and WordArt styling to the text.

With the contextual tab visible, find the WordArt Styles group. It contains Text Fill, Text Outline, and Text Effects. If the tab disappears after clicking elsewhere, select the text again; these controls are contextual rather than permanently displayed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do Text Fill, Text Outline, and Text Effects differ?

Use Text Fill for the inside of each character, Text Outline for its border, and Text Effects for depth, lighting, and transformations. Shape styles are separate: they affect the surrounding box or background, not the letter treatment.

Control What it changes Available choices
Text Fill The interior area of every letter Solid color, gradient, picture, or texture
Text Outline The border around each character Color, weight (thickness), and dash style
Text Effects Depth, emphasis, lighting, and the text path Shadow, Reflection, Glow, Bevel, 3-D Rotation, and Transform
Shape Styles The surrounding shape or text box Style presets for the object background and container

Use the table as a diagnostic guide. If letters remain unchanged after a shape-style click, that is expected: the shape preset belongs to the container. Reselect the characters and use the WordArt Styles group instead.

Change the letter color or texture

  1. Select the WordArt letters or enter text-editing mode.
  2. On Shape Format, open Text Fill.
  3. Choose a solid color, or choose a gradient, picture, or texture fill.
  4. Click outside the object to see the finished appearance without the editing selection.

A gradient is a progression between colors or shades rather than a single flat color. Picture and texture fills place those visual materials inside the letterforms. They do not replace the background of the text box. If the result appears unchanged, verify that the text itself is selected and that you opened Text Fill rather than Shape Fill or a shape-style preset.

Change the border around each character

  1. Select the WordArt text.
  2. Choose Shape Format > Text Outline.
  3. Pick the outline color.
  4. Use the outline options to set its weight and dash pattern.

These settings apply to the character border. They are independent of the line around the overall WordArt object, so changing an object outline is not a substitute for changing Text Outline. A heavier weight makes the edge more prominent; a dash style creates a patterned character border.

How do I add a shadow, glow, reflection, bevel, or 3-D effect?

Select the WordArt text, open Shape Format > Text Effects, and choose an effect family. Each family has preset variations and, where offered, options for adjusting the result. Apply one preset, click outside the text box to inspect it, and then add another family only if the extra emphasis is useful.

Shadow

Choose Text Effects > Shadow and select a preset. The shadow separates the letters from the page or slide by adding a displaced darker copy. It is useful when the fill and background have similar values, but an overly strong preset can make small lettering look heavy.

Reflection

Choose Text Effects > Reflection for a reflected image beneath or behind the lettering. Reflection presets differ in how far the reflection extends and how quickly it fades. The effect remains attached to the text, so it follows the WordArt when the object is moved or rotated.

Glow

Choose Text Effects > Glow and select a color and intensity preset. Glow adds a halo around the letters and is useful when the letters need emphasis against a dark or busy background. Compare the result with the editing boundary hidden; the boundary can make a subtle glow difficult to judge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bevel

Choose Text Effects > Bevel to make the edges appear raised or cut. Bevel changes the apparent shape of the letter edges rather than changing the fill color. It can be paired with a contrasting outline when the edge needs to read clearly.

3-D Rotation

Choose Text Effects > 3-D Rotation for perspective-style presets. The rotation changes how the letters face the viewer; it is different from simply turning the entire object with the rotation handle. The text can therefore appear to recede or face at an angle while its object remains in its original page position.

You can combine individual effect families. For example, a WordArt object can use a gradient fill, an outline, a shadow, and a bevel at the same time. Combining effects is independent: removing the glow does not automatically remove a shadow, and changing the fill does not clear a Transform. If a combination becomes confusing, remove one family at a time or use Clear WordArt to reset the complete WordArt styling.

How do I curve or make circular WordArt text?

Use the Transform submenu. It changes the path or warp of the letters rather than merely rotating the WordArt box.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select the WordArt text.
  2. Open Shape Format > Text Effects.
  3. Choose Transform. It appears at the bottom of the Text Effects menu.
  4. Select a curved path or another warp preset.
  5. Click outside the text box to inspect the curve without the editing boundary.

Curved and circular presets bend the text along a path, so individual characters follow the arc. This is different from turning a straight title on an angle. If you need an arch, circle, or other warped baseline, Transform is the relevant control; if you only need the whole title to lean, use object rotation.

If Transform is missing, the letters are probably not selected, or a different menu is open. Return to the text selection and open the full Text Effects menu again. Do not look under Shape Styles or Arrange for this command. Older editions may show the contextual tab as Drawing Tools Format, but Transform is still part of Text Effects.

How do I rotate or flip WordArt?

There are two distinct rotation methods: object rotation and 3-D text rotation.

Free rotation

Select the whole WordArt object and drag its circular rotation handle. This lets you set an arbitrary angle by eye. A solid border should surround the object; if you are editing letters with a dashed border, click the edge first so the handle appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Exact flips and quarter turns

With the object selected, use Shape Format > Arrange > Rotate. The commands include horizontal or vertical flips and 90-degree rotations. These commands turn or mirror the complete container and preserve the straight baseline of the lettering.

Perspective rotation

For a dimensional viewpoint rather than a flat turn, select the letters and use Text Effects > 3-D Rotation. This changes the apparent viewing angle of the characters while the object remains in place. It is an effect on the text, not the same operation as the Arrange rotation menu.

How do I remove one effect without clearing the others?

Remove an individual effect from its own submenu so that the other formatting remains intact.

  1. Select the WordArt text.
  2. Open Shape Format > Text Effects.
  3. Open the family you want to undo: Shadow, Reflection, Glow, Bevel, 3-D Rotation, or Transform.
  4. Choose the corresponding No command, such as No Shadow, No Reflection, No Glow, No Bevel, No Rotation, or No Transform.

Repeat the process for each family you want to remove. For example, choose No Glow to retain a shadow, then choose No Transform separately if the curve should also be removed. Clearing one family does not clear the fill or outline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To reset all WordArt styling in one operation, open the WordArt gallery and choose Clear WordArt. This is different from deleting the object: the text object remains, but its WordArt styling is cleared.

Delete the object entirely

Select the entire WordArt object so the border is solid, then press Delete. If the border is dashed, you are editing characters instead; click the edge of the object first to select the container. Deleting while editing text can remove selected characters rather than the complete object, so confirm the border state before pressing Delete.

Why did changing the shape style not change my letters?

Shape styles format the surrounding box or background. They do not replace the fill, outline, or effects applied to the characters.

To change the letters themselves, select the text and use the WordArt Styles controls:

  • Text Outline changes the character border.
  • Text Effects changes shadow, reflection, glow, bevel, 3-D rotation, and Transform.

If you want only a typeface, size, bold, italic, or underline change, use the Home tab’s Font group. Those are font attributes, not WordArt effects. You can change the font and then return to Shape Format for the fill, outline, or effect; one set of controls does not replace the other.

What should I do when a WordArt command is missing?

Most missing-command problems are caused by selecting the wrong part of the object or using the web app instead of desktop Office. Work through the following checklist before assuming that an effect is unavailable.

The Shape Format tab does not appear

  • Double-click the WordArt, or click it once and then select the text.
  • Check that the object is not hidden behind another shape. Select its visible edge if necessary.
  • Look for the older label Drawing Tools Format if you are using an earlier Office layout.
  • Make sure you selected a WordArt object or the text in a text box, not an unrelated page element.

Transform is not listed

  • Select the letters rather than a different shape on the page.
  • Open Text Effects, not just Shape Styles or Arrange.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the Text Effects menu, where Transform is listed.
  • If the menu closed after another command, reopen it while the text remains selected.

The browser version will not insert new WordArt

Microsoft 365 for the web can display WordArt already present in a document, but creating additional WordArt requires opening the file in the desktop version. Use the desktop Word, PowerPoint, or Excel application for the Insert > WordArt command. The desktop requirement applies to creation; it does not mean existing WordArt disappears from a browser view.

The wrong item is being deleted

Use the border as a quick check. A solid border means object-level selection and is appropriate for moving, resizing, rotating, flipping, or deleting the container. A dashed border means text editing and is appropriate for selecting letters and changing their font or WordArt styling. Switching to the correct state usually restores the expected command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which workflow should I use for common WordArt goals?

Choose the control that matches the visual change you want; using a shape preset for a letter effect is the most common source of confusion.

Goal Selection and menu path Result
Flat letter color Select letters > Shape Format > Text Fill Changes the inside of each character
Picture or texture letters Select letters > Text Fill > picture or texture Places the material inside the character shapes
Thicker or dashed character border Select letters > Text Outline Changes border color, weight, or dash style
Curved or circular lettering Select letters > Text Effects > Transform Bends or warps the text path
Raised-looking letters Select letters > Text Effects > Bevel Adds a beveled edge
Soft emphasis around letters Select letters > Text Effects > Glow Adds a glowing halo
Depth behind letters Select letters > Text Effects > Shadow Adds a displaced darker copy
Faded duplicate below letters Select letters > Text Effects > Reflection Adds a reflected image with a preset fade
Turn the whole title Select object > drag rotation handle or Arrange > Rotate Rotates or flips the WordArt container
Perspective lettering Select letters > Text Effects > 3-D Rotation Changes the apparent viewing angle of characters
Remove only one effect Select letters > relevant Text Effects family > matching No command Leaves unrelated effects in place
Reset every WordArt style WordArt gallery > Clear WordArt Clears the WordArt styling in one step

What are the practical limits of WordArt on desktop and web Office?

The creation workflow is desktop-only according to Microsoft’s current support guidance for the covered Office editions. Existing WordArt remains viewable in Microsoft 365 for the web, but the browser editor does not provide the command for adding a new WordArt object. If you are collaborating in a browser, create the object in desktop Word, PowerPoint, or Excel first, then return to the web document for viewing or other supported edits.

Menu labels can differ between current and older desktop releases. The underlying separation remains the same: Text Fill and Text Outline style the characters, Text Effects adds dimensional or path effects, and Shape Styles format the surrounding object. If a label differs, look for those functions on the contextual format tab after selecting the text.

These steps use commands built into the supported desktop applications. There is no separate effect plug-in or physical accessory involved in the operation. The relevant requirement is access to a desktop edition that exposes WordArt, rather than a particular display, stylus, or add-on.

How can I check the result before finishing?

After choosing a fill, outline, effect, or Transform preset, click outside the text box. This removes the active editing boundary and makes it easier to judge the appearance against the page or slide. A selection outline can obscure a thin outline, subtle glow, reflection fade, or the exact curve of the letters.

Review the result in stages: first check the fill, then the outline, then any dimensional effect, and finally the path or rotation. If the result is wrong, reselect the letters and change the specific control rather than applying a new shape style to the container. For a clean reset, use the matching No command for one effect or Clear WordArt for all WordArt styling.

A quick decision guide

Ask what should visibly move or change. If only the inside of the characters should change, use Text Fill. If the edge of every character should become thicker, colored, or dashed, use Text Outline. If letters need depth or lighting, use Shadow, Reflection, Glow, Bevel, or 3-D Rotation under Text Effects. If the baseline should arc or warp, use Transform. If the entire title should turn like a card, select the object and use its rotation handle or Arrange commands. Keeping those targets separate makes the workflow predictable across Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a picture or texture inside WordArt letters?

Yes. Select the letters, open Shape Format > Text Fill, and choose a picture or texture option instead of a solid color. The image or texture fills the character interiors; it does not become the background of the surrounding text box.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between a curved path and rotating WordArt?

Transform bends each character along a path, which is how you make arched or circular lettering. The rotation handle and Arrange > Rotate turn the entire WordArt object without changing the baseline of individual letters.

How do I keep a shadow but remove a glow?

Select the WordArt letters and open Text Effects > Glow, then choose No Glow. The shadow remains because each effect family has its own removal command.

Why can I edit existing WordArt in a browser but not add another one?

Microsoft 365 for the web supports viewing existing WordArt, while Microsoft’s documented creation command is available in the desktop applications. Open the document in desktop Word, PowerPoint, or Excel to insert a new object.

Which control changes only the font, not the WordArt styling?

Use the Home tab’s Font group for typeface, size, bold, italics, or underline. Use the contextual WordArt controls when you need a fill, outline, shadow, curve, glow, bevel, reflection, or 3-D treatment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is the Shape Format tab missing after I click the page?

The tab is contextual. Select the WordArt object or click into its text again; older editions may call the tab Drawing Tools Format. A regular page selection will not expose WordArt Styles.

Can I remove just a curve while keeping the fill and outline?

Yes. Select the letters, open Text Effects > Transform, and choose No Transform. The Text Fill, Text Outline, and other effect families remain unless you remove them separately.

How do I delete WordArt without deleting only a few characters?

Click the object edge until the border is solid, then press Delete. A dashed border means text editing, where Delete can remove selected characters instead of the entire WordArt object.

Does a shape style recolor the WordArt letters?

Not necessarily. Shape styles apply to the surrounding box or background. For the characters, select the text and use Text Fill, Text Outline, or Text Effects in the WordArt Styles group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which desktop apps can create WordArt?

The documented creation path is Insert > WordArt in desktop Word and PowerPoint. In Excel, start with Insert > Text Box, type the text, and then apply the WordArt formatting steps. Microsoft 365 for the web can display existing WordArt but requires a desktop app to add new WordArt.

The Bottom Line

For reliable WordArt formatting, select the letters first, then use Shape Format > Text Fill, Text Outline, or Text Effects. Use Transform for curves and warps, object rotation for turning the whole title, and the matching No command when removing a single effect. New WordArt must be created in desktop Office; the web apps can display existing WordArt.
