Yes. You can launch Xbox Cloud Gaming from Steam Deck Gaming Mode by installing the Microsoft Edge Flatpak in Desktop Mode, adding Edge to Steam as a non-Steam shortcut, and configuring that shortcut to open https://www.xbox.com/play in kiosk mode. Steam then exposes the shortcut in Gaming Mode with a Deck controller layout.
This is a browser-based workaround, not a native Xbox app installation. Microsoft says the Edge Flatpak is community maintained and that Edge on SteamOS is not officially supported, so use the method if you are comfortable with a small amount of desktop-mode configuration.

The official method turns Microsoft Edge into a Steam library shortcut. You install the browser in Desktop Mode, give its Flatpak permission to read the controller device path, set launch arguments that open Xbox Cloud Gaming at https://www.xbox.com/play, and assign a Steam gamepad layout. After that, you can start the shortcut from Gaming Mode’s Non-Steam section instead of opening Desktop Mode each time.
Microsoft’s instructions do not install an Xbox application on SteamOS. They use the Edge browser package and a Steam shortcut, and Xbox Wire describes Steam Deck access as beta. Microsoft also states that it does not actively maintain the Edge Flatpak package or provide official support for Edge on SteamOS. Read the current Microsoft Steam Deck setup article if package behavior changes.

The distinction matters when choosing this route: the Deck is opening a web service through a browser, not running a local Xbox game or installing a native Xbox app. The cloud-playable catalog, account eligibility, and stream itself are controlled by Xbox service terms and your connection. Steam’s role is to provide a convenient launcher and a controller configuration.
What should I prepare before starting?
Have your Microsoft account, a reliable network connection, and a way to operate Desktop Mode ready. A mouse and keyboard make the setup faster, but they are optional because Steam Deck supports the touchscreen, trackpads, and the STEAM+X touch keyboard shortcut.
It is useful to distinguish setup input from play input. A keyboard can make text entry or navigating desktop menus more comfortable, but it is not a requirement for later Gaming Mode sessions. Xbox’s general cloud-gaming setup guidance calls for a compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB; on the Deck, Microsoft’s procedure uses the built-in controls through the Steam layout configured below. A particular game may still handle inputs differently, so check its supported controls if the default layout does not behave as expected.
| Requirement | What to know |
|---|---|
| Steam Deck access | You must switch to Desktop Mode to install Edge and edit the Steam shortcut, then return to Gaming Mode for normal launching. |
| Microsoft account or subscription | Xbox lists Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate as cloud-gaming subscription options. Select free-to-play games can be available with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Eligibility, catalog access, and cloud-play time depend on the current plan, title, and region; check Xbox’s live cloud-gaming page. |
| Controller | Xbox’s general setup guidance calls for a compatible controller over Bluetooth or USB. The Deck’s built-in controls are made usable through the Steam controller layout in the steps below, although individual games can differ in input behavior. |
| Internet | Xbox lists 10 Mbps as a minimum in its FAQ, while Xbox Wire recommends at least 20 Mbps and, where possible, wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Treat 20 Mbps as a recommendation, not a guarantee of image quality or latency. |
| Regional and device availability | Cloud Gaming is limited to supported regions, eligible browsers and devices, and games enabled for cloud play. The catalog and features change over time. |
For the network, a stable connection matters in addition to the headline speed. Xbox’s FAQ lists a 10 Mbps minimum and notes that some devices may need 20 Mbps; Xbox Wire’s Steam Deck-oriented guidance recommends at least 20 Mbps. If your Deck is on Wi-Fi, Xbox recommends 5 GHz. Wired Ethernet is an option where practical. These figures are service guidance, not a promise of a particular resolution, frame rate, or input response: interference, congestion, and the quality of the connection can still affect the stream.
Availability is another preflight check. Xbox Cloud Gaming is available only in supported regions and on eligible devices and browsers, and not every game in a subscription catalog is cloud-enabled. A game can also have different availability depending on the plan. Check the current regional service page and the individual game’s cloud-play listing rather than assuming that any title associated with Xbox can be streamed on the Deck.
How do I install Microsoft Edge on Steam Deck?
Install the browser from Discover while you are in Desktop Mode. The package used in Microsoft’s instructions is a Flatpak, and the application may be labeled as community maintained rather than as a SteamOS system component.
Recommended Free Tools
- Press the Steam button, choose Power, and select Switch to Desktop. Wait for the KDE desktop to load.
- Open Discover Software Center.
- Browse to Applications > Internet > Web Browsers.
- Find Microsoft Edge and select Install. Let Discover finish before proceeding.
If you cannot use a physical keyboard, tap a text field and press STEAM+X to open the on-screen keyboard. The touchscreen and trackpads can operate Discover and the desktop menus.
Microsoft recommends a mouse and keyboard during configuration, but describes them as conveniences rather than prerequisites. If you have them, they can simplify pointing and typing in Desktop Mode. If you do not, the Deck’s touch controls and trackpads can navigate the software center and Steam properties, while STEAM+X brings up the touch keyboard for text fields.

How do I add Edge as a Steam non-Steam game?
Adding the browser from the desktop application menu creates the library entry that Gaming Mode can launch.
- Open the desktop Application Launcher.
- Choose Internet, locate Microsoft Edge, and right-click it.
- Select Add to Steam. Steam opens its Add a Game window.
- Select the Edge entry and click Add Selected Programs (or the equivalent add button shown by your Steam client).
At this point the shortcut may have a generic browser name and icon. That is expected; the Xbox-specific name, launch arguments, and controller mapping come next.

Adding Edge to Steam does not change the browser into an Xbox app; it creates a library entry that Steam can launch and configure. The shortcut is listed with other non-Steam items, so you do not need to search the installed Steam-games list when you return to the console interface.
How do I give Edge controller access?
Microsoft documents a Flatpak permission override so Edge can access the Linux udev device path used for controller input. Run it from Konsole exactly as shown:
- Open Konsole from the desktop application menu.
- Enter
flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.Edgeand press Enter. - When the command completes, type
exitand press Enter, or close Konsole.
The --user option applies the override to your user account, and :ro requests read-only access to that path. Do not remove the path or change the application identifier: the command is tied to the Edge Flatpak package used by the procedure.
This permission command is a specific part of Microsoft’s Edge setup, not a general instruction to grant broad filesystem access to other apps. Enter it as written, including the :ro suffix and the com.microsoft.Edge identifier. If controller input later fails, re-running the documented command and confirming the correct shortcut’s layout are the first checks.
What launch options should the Steam shortcut use?
Configure the shortcut’s name and launch arguments in Steam’s library properties. The options set a 1024-by-640 browser window, scaling values suitable for the Deck display, and kiosk mode so the browser opens directly to Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- Open Steam while still in Desktop Mode and go to your Library.
- Select the Edge shortcut, open its Properties, and rename it Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta).
- Find the Launch Options field. Steam may already show
@@u @@text there. - Append this text after the existing
@@u @@text, leaving a space before the first option:--window-size=1024,640 --force-device-scale-factor=1.25 --device-scale-factor=1.25 --kiosk "https://www.xbox.com/play" - Close the Properties window or let Steam save the field automatically.
Do not replace the existing @@u @@ portion if it is present; append the Xbox-specific arguments after it. The quoted URL matters because kiosk mode needs to open the full address as one argument.

Each part serves a practical purpose: the window-size and scale-factor arguments tailor the browser display for the Deck, while --kiosk opens the Xbox page directly rather than presenting a normal browser window. The address should be the complete https://www.xbox.com/play URL. If Edge opens to a generic start page or another site, check the launch field for a missing argument, a lost space, or an altered URL before reinstalling the browser.
How do I set the Steam Deck controller layout?
Apply Steam’s Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad template to the shortcut. This supplies gamepad input while preserving pointer control for browser menus and sign-in screens.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- With the shortcut selected in Steam’s Library, choose Manage, then Controller layout.
- Open the layout browser or configuration list.
- Browse the templates and select Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad.
- Apply the template and exit the layout editor.
Xbox’s service can still behave differently from game to game. If a particular title does not recognize an input, return to this layout screen and inspect the assigned buttons or trackpad behavior before changing the browser settings.
The mouse-trackpad part of the template is useful beyond gameplay: it gives you pointer control for the cloud-gaming page and account sign-in. The gamepad mapping is intended to make the Deck’s built-in controls available to the browser session. It does not guarantee that every title accepts every input in the same way, so distinguish a page-navigation issue from a game-specific control issue when troubleshooting.
How do I launch Xbox Cloud Gaming from Gaming Mode?
Return to the console interface, find the new shortcut in Library > Non-Steam, and launch it like any other library item.
- On the Desktop, select the Return to Gaming Mode icon.
- In Gaming Mode, open Library and select the Non-Steam section.
- Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta).
- Press Play. Edge opens directly to Xbox Cloud Gaming in kiosk mode.
- Sign in at Xbox.com if prompted, then select a game marked as available for cloud play.
The first launch may require account authentication in the browser window. Once signed in, future launches normally use the same shortcut until the session expires or you sign out.
If the shortcut is not immediately obvious, confirm that its renamed entry is in the Non-Steam library section. It is the same Edge shortcut you added on the desktop, not a separately installed Xbox title. You only need to return to Desktop Mode to change the installation, permission, launch options, controller configuration, or artwork; ordinary launches begin from Gaming Mode.
Should I add Xbox artwork to the shortcut?
Artwork is optional polish. The shortcut works without it, but Microsoft provides official Xbox Cloud Gaming icon, banner, and capsule images that you can apply through Steam’s library artwork controls.
To add it, open the shortcut’s library properties or artwork context menus in Desktop Mode or Gaming Mode, choose the relevant icon, hero/banner, or capsule slot, and select the supplied image file. Artwork does not change controller access, browser permissions, subscription eligibility, or streaming performance, so skip it if you only want a working launcher.
In other words, do not delay testing the shortcut while trying to perfect its library appearance. First confirm that Edge opens the play page, that account sign-in works, and that a cloud-enabled game launches. You can apply the official icon, banner, and capsule artwork later if you want the non-Steam entry to be easier to recognize among library items.
What should I check if the shortcut does not work?
Most failures come from one of four places: the Edge package, the Flatpak override, the launch-options field, or cloud-service eligibility. Check the specific symptom instead of reinstalling everything.

| Symptom | Checks and recovery |

| Shortcut is missing in Gaming Mode | Return to Desktop Mode and confirm Edge was added through the Application Launcher’s Add to Steam command. In Gaming Mode, look under Library > Non-Steam, not the installed Steam-games list. |
| Edge opens, but not Xbox Cloud Gaming | Reopen the shortcut’s Properties and verify that the launch field still contains the existing @@u @@ text followed by the complete kiosk command and quoted https://www.xbox.com/play URL. |
| Deck controls do nothing | Run the documented Konsole command again, then confirm that Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad is applied to this shortcut rather than to a different Steam entry. |
| Menus are difficult to operate | Use the trackpad or touchscreen for pointer movement. Press STEAM+X when a text field needs the on-screen keyboard. The 1.25 scaling arguments are intended to make the browser interface usable on the Deck display. |
| A game is unavailable | Check whether the title is cloud-enabled, whether your plan or free-to-play account qualifies, and whether Xbox Cloud Gaming is available in your region. The service catalog and plan features can change. |
| Video stutters or feels delayed | Check the connection before changing the shortcut. Xbox Wire recommends at least 20 Mbps and wired Ethernet where possible; otherwise use a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection and reduce competing network traffic. |
For an account or catalog issue, verify the service conditions before treating it as a Deck configuration failure. Cloud gaming is limited by region, plan eligibility, the specific title’s cloud status, and current service terms. An unavailable title will not become playable by changing the Steam shortcut. Likewise, stream quality is not set by the browser arguments: check Wi-Fi band, signal, and congestion before editing the launch options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the service and support limitations?
This setup gives the Deck a browser route to Xbox Cloud Gaming; it does not make every Xbox title playable and does not turn SteamOS into a supported Xbox application platform. Xbox Wire reported that Steam Deck support was in beta in its December 19, 2025 overview, and Microsoft says Edge on SteamOS is not officially supported.
Cloud access also depends on the account and the game. Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate are listed as subscription options, while selected free-to-play games can be available with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Monthly cloud-play limits, plan benefits, supported regions, and the game catalog are live-service details, so verify them on Xbox’s current cloud-gaming page instead of relying on an old price or game-count snapshot.

Network conditions affect the stream independently of the Deck shortcut. Xbox’s FAQ gives 10 Mbps as a minimum, notes that some devices may need 20 Mbps, and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Xbox Wire’s Deck-oriented guidance recommends at least 20 Mbps and wired Ethernet when possible. Those figures describe connection guidance, not a guaranteed frame rate, resolution, or latency.
Microsoft’s support article says it does not actively maintain the Edge Flatpak and does not provide official support for Edge on SteamOS. That is separate from the status of Xbox Cloud Gaming itself: the Deck method uses Edge as a community-maintained browser package, and the setup is for enthusiasts comfortable with Desktop Mode configuration. If an Edge package or SteamOS change affects the procedure, Microsoft’s current setup instructions are the place to check for revised steps.
Xbox Wire reported on December 19, 2025, that overall Xbox Cloud Gaming hours were up 45% year over year. That figure is service-wide context, not a Deck-specific performance measure and not a promise that a particular connection or game will work well. For setup decisions, the practical factors remain regional support, account and title eligibility, controller behavior, and a stable network.
Is this the best way to use Xbox Cloud Gaming on a Steam Deck?
For Gaming Mode access, the Edge shortcut is the documented route: it requires one Desktop Mode setup and then behaves like a library item. It is a practical choice when you want the Deck’s built-in controls and Steam’s controller profiles without maintaining a separate desktop browser workflow.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Compare it with access on a device that has native app support: the Deck method takes more initial work because you install Edge, add it to Steam, grant the documented permission, and configure launch and controller settings. Its advantage is that you can launch the browser route from Steam’s Gaming Mode library. It does not remove Xbox’s browser, controller, region, subscription, or network requirements, and it is not equivalent to a native Xbox app.

Choose it with realistic expectations. The method has more setup work than opening a cloud-gaming app on a device with native support, Edge on SteamOS is community maintained and unsupported by Microsoft, and service availability varies by region, plan, title, and network. If those conditions are acceptable, the shortcut provides the quickest repeatable path from the Deck’s Gaming Mode interface to Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Why does Xbox Cloud Gaming on Steam Deck require Desktop Mode?
Desktop Mode is where Discover installs the Edge Flatpak, the desktop application menu exposes Add to Steam, Konsole accepts the udev permission command, and Steam’s shortcut properties can be edited. After those one-time changes, normal launches happen from Gaming Mode.
Xbox Wire characterizes Steam Deck setup as more involved because it requires this desktop installation and configuration process. The extra steps are a consequence of using browser access rather than a native SteamOS Xbox application.
The setup is therefore a one-time configuration rather than a requirement to play from the desktop each time. Once the shortcut is present in the Non-Steam library, Gaming Mode is the normal launch point. Return to Desktop Mode only if you need to edit the shortcut or revisit the browser configuration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play every Game Pass game through the Deck shortcut?
No. Only games enabled for cloud play appear as playable through the service, and availability can differ by plan and region. Xbox changes its catalog and features over time, so check the current listing before assuming a specific title will launch.
Do I need a physical mouse and keyboard after setup?
No. Microsoft recommends them for convenience during Desktop Mode configuration, but the Deck touchscreen, trackpads, and STEAM+X touch keyboard can handle the setup. For game sessions, the Steam controller profile is intended to provide the needed controls.
What connection should I use for the most reliable stream?
Use wired Ethernet when practical or a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection. Xbox lists 10 Mbps as a minimum in its FAQ, while its Deck guidance recommends at least 20 Mbps; neither figure guarantees low latency because local interference and network congestion also matter.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I use Xbox Cloud Gaming without paying for Game Pass?
Some free-to-play games can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Other cloud games require an eligible Game Pass plan, and the available titles and terms can change, so confirm the current requirement for the game you want.
Is this a native Xbox app for Steam Deck?
No. The documented setup installs the Edge Flatpak and adds it to Steam as a non-Steam shortcut that opens xbox.com/play. The method provides browser access from Gaming Mode, not a native Xbox application.
Is Microsoft Edge on SteamOS officially supported?
No. Microsoft says the Edge Flatpak is community maintained, is not actively maintained by Microsoft, and is not officially supported on SteamOS. Xbox Wire described Steam Deck cloud-gaming support as beta in its December 19, 2025 overview.
Do I have to add the Xbox artwork for the shortcut to work?
No. Microsoft’s icon, banner, and capsule images are optional library polish. The shortcut can launch without artwork, and artwork does not affect browser permissions, controller access, or service eligibility.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Bottom Line
Install Edge in Desktop Mode, add it to Steam, run Microsoft’s documented Flatpak permission command, and set the shortcut to open https://www.xbox.com/play with the Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad layout. Then launch it from Library > Non-Steam in Gaming Mode. This is browser access rather than a native Xbox app, and play depends on supported regions, eligible games and plans, and a stable connection.
