The quickest way to tune the Arctis Nova 3X is to use SteelSeries GG on a PC: open Sonar, then use Game for listening EQ and spatial audio, Microphone for a record-and-playback mic check, and Chat for voice-channel sound. On Xbox, put the wireless dongle in Xbox mode; on PC, PS5, or a docked Nintendo Switch, use PC mode. You can also pair the headset to a phone or tablet over Bluetooth. Make one processing change at a time, listen to the game or recording you actually use, and avoid stacking Sonar spatial audio with Windows spatial sound until you have compared the result.
What do I need before changing Nova 3X settings?
You need the headset, its wireless dongle, and the correct dongle mode for your platform. EQ, microphone processing, chat processing, and Sonar spatial-audio controls are adjusted on a Windows PC through SteelSeries GG. The headset can still be used on consoles, but the detailed Sonar workflow is a PC control surface.

| Docked Nintendo Switch | PC | Move the switch to PC, connect the dongle by USB, and power on the headset. | Console and game controls; Sonar adjustments are made on a PC. |
| Phone or tablet Bluetooth | Not applicable | With the headset already powered on, press the Power button once, then choose “Arctis Nova 3X Wireless” in the device’s Bluetooth menu. | Use the phone or tablet’s audio controls. |
The Nova 3X includes a detachable ClearCast microphone. If yours is missing or damaged, look for a compatible detachable replacement rather than treating the microphone as a permanently attached part of the headset.
How do I connect the Nova 3X on each platform?
Xbox
- Set the wireless dongle switch to Xbox.
- Connect the dongle to the Xbox.
- Power on the headset and wait for the wireless connection.
Using the PC position on Xbox is the most common setup mistake: the switch position is part of the connection procedure, not an EQ setting.

Bluetooth
- Turn on the headset.
- Press the Power button once while it is already powered on to start Bluetooth pairing.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the phone or tablet.
- Select Arctis Nova 3X Wireless.
Bluetooth pairing is separate from the USB-dongle setup. If you are troubleshooting wireless game audio, first confirm that the dongle and its switch position match the platform you are using.
How do I adjust the gaming EQ in SteelSeries GG?
On a Windows PC, the exact path is SteelSeries GG > Sonar > Game > Test Sound > Gaming audio. Sonar plays a sample while you edit, and SteelSeries says EQ changes are audible instantly.

- Select Sonar, then open the Game tab.
- Open Test Sound and choose Gaming audio.
- Press play so the sample continues while you work.
- Adjust the Equalizer while listening. Move one band at a time, then pause to hear what changed.
- For an exact value, double-click a frequency and type the desired value directly.
- Close the test and check the same change with the game, soundtrack, or video you actually care about.
The official instructions describe the editing workflow, not a single correct curve. A setting that exposes footsteps can make music thinner; a setting that makes explosions feel larger can mask quieter effects. Treat presets as preferences, and judge them with familiar content at a comfortable listening level rather than assuming a named preset is universally better.
How should I choose an EQ approach?
| Goal | Listening method | Adjustment principle |
|---|---|---|
| Hear positional game details | Use a familiar match or practice area, then replay the same section after each change. | Make small changes and confirm that detail is clearer without making voices or effects harsh. |
| Enjoy a cinematic game or soundtrack | Use a scene containing dialogue, music, and low-frequency effects. | Balance the whole scene instead of optimizing only for one sound. |
| Reduce an irritating tonal emphasis | Loop the section where the problem is obvious. | Cut the offending area gradually; large boosts and cuts can create a new problem elsewhere. |
| Compare two presets | Keep volume and test material the same, and switch only one setting at a time. | Choose the version that remains comfortable over a long session, not merely the one that sounds dramatic for a few seconds. |
Sonar’s test sample is useful for a repeatable starting point, but the final check should be made with your own games and media. If an EQ change appears to do nothing, verify that Sonar is the active playback path and that the game is not sending audio directly to a different output.
How do I make the Nova 3X microphone sound better?
Use Sonar’s microphone record-and-playback loop before changing filters. This lets you hear the result as a listener would, rather than judging the microphone only from your own sidetone.

- Stop the test and play the recording back.
- Adjust the Microphone Equalizer while listening to the recording.
- Record another sample after each meaningful change so you can compare like with like.
Where should I place the detachable microphone?
Keep the ClearCast microphone close to the corner of your mouth, with its front surface facing you. This placement gives the capsule a consistent voice signal and helps you avoid compensating for a poor angle with excessive software processing. Recheck the position after moving the headset or folding the boom away.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How do I remove keyboard and room noise?
If the recording contains room or keyboard noise, enable Noise Reduction in the Microphone tab and test again. SteelSeries specifically recommends Impact Noise Reduction for loud keyboard impact noise. Compare the processed recording with the unprocessed one: if consonants become less natural, reduce the processing rather than continuing to add more filters.
A clean recording also depends on the physical setup. Move the microphone closer to your mouth before raising gain, keep a noisy keyboard as far from the microphone as practical, and record at the same desk position you use for chat. Software can reduce unwanted sound, but it cannot make a badly aimed or distant microphone behave like a close one.
How do I tune chat and voice-channel audio?
Chat has its own Sonar path, separate from the Game mix. Open Sonar > Chat > Test Sound, choose Communication, and press play while adjusting the chat equalizer.
- Open SteelSeries GG and select Sonar.
- Choose the Chat tab.
- Open Test Sound and select Communication.
- Press play and adjust the chat equalizer while listening.
- Use the available Noise Reduction, Noise Gate, and Smart Voice controls only after you have a sensible microphone position and level.
- Join a private party or voice test and confirm that both your voice and other players’ voices remain intelligible during game audio.
Chat processing is for the communication path; changing the Game equalizer will not replace a chat check. If teammates report clipped words, back off aggressive gating or noise processing and repeat the test with normal speech, pauses, and a few louder phrases.

How do I turn on spatial audio for the Nova 3X?
You can test spatial processing in Sonar or use a Windows-level spatial option. Start with one layer, listen to a familiar game, and only then compare another layer. Running multiple spatial processors at the same time can produce an unfamiliar or hollow result, and the official instructions do not prescribe one combination for every game.
Sonar spatial audio
- Open SteelSeries GG > Sonar > Game.
- Open Test Sound.
- Choose Spatial audio.
- Press play.
- Adjust the Spatial Audio controls while listening in real time.
- Test the result in the game itself, especially in a scene where you know the direction of important sounds.
Sonar’s Game tab is the PC control surface for both gaming EQ and its spatial-audio test. Spatial processing is a listening choice, not a guarantee of better positioning; use the setting that leaves directional cues easiest for you to identify without making dialogue or music distracting.
Windows Sonic for Headphones
Windows provides a separate system-level option called Windows Sonic for Headphones. To enable it, follow this path:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Select the Nova 3X playback device.
- Open Device Properties.
- Choose Spatial sound.
- Select Windows Sonic for Headphones.
- Click Apply.
Microsoft also lists Dolby Access and DTS Sound Unbound as downloadable Windows alternatives. Compare them one at a time with Sonar disabled or enabled deliberately, so you know which layer is active. A game may also have its own headphone or 3D-audio mode; check its instructions before enabling every available option simultaneously.
What is the difference between Sonar and Windows spatial sound?
| Configuration | Processing layer | Best use | Important check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sonar Game spatial audio | SteelSeries GG on a Windows PC | One place to test gaming EQ and spatial controls. | Confirm the game is routed through Sonar and use the Test Sound sample before judging the result. |
| Windows Sonic for Headphones | Windows system sound | A system-level spatial option that can affect compatible applications. | Follow the Sound-device path and apply the setting to the Nova 3X playback device. |
| Dolby Access or DTS Sound Unbound | Downloadable Windows spatial alternatives | Another system-level option to compare with Windows Sonic. | Do not run several spatial processors together without an intentional A/B comparison. |
| Game-specific 3D audio | The individual game | Games that expose their own headphone or positional-audio mode. | Read the game’s audio description and test it separately from Sonar and Windows processing. |
Can I use these controls on Xbox, PS5, or Nintendo Switch?
The documented EQ, microphone-test, chat, and spatial-audio workflows are in SteelSeries GG on a Windows PC. For console use, the critical setup action is selecting the correct dongle mode: Xbox for Xbox, and PC for PS5 or a docked Switch. Console menus and individual games may offer their own audio controls, but the official setup material does not provide a universal console EQ curve or a single console spatial-audio recipe.

If you tune Sonar on a PC and then move the dongle to a console, do not assume every PC processing choice is active in the same way. Check the console’s selected output, game audio mode, and chat balance separately. The safe comparison is to listen on the target console and make changes in the controls that console actually exposes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do if the sound or microphone is wrong?
No wireless audio
- Check that the dongle switch matches the platform: Xbox for Xbox, PC for PC, PS5, and docked Switch.
- Reconnect the USB dongle, power-cycle the headset, and confirm that the correct playback device is selected.
- On a phone or tablet, use Bluetooth pairing instead of expecting the USB-dongle procedure to appear in the Bluetooth menu.
EQ changes are not audible
- Make sure you are editing Sonar > Game, not only a different chat or microphone tab.
- Keep Test Sound > Gaming audio playing while editing.
- Check that the game is using the Sonar playback route and that another system or game EQ is not masking the change.
- Double-click a frequency to enter an exact value if a drag adjustment is too small to evaluate.
The microphone is quiet, muffled, or noisy
- Place the detachable ClearCast microphone close to the corner of your mouth with its front facing you.
- Run a fresh 15-second Mic Test recording and listen back.
- Use the Microphone Equalizer for tonal changes and Impact Noise Reduction for loud keyboard impacts, testing after each adjustment.
- If the result becomes processed or words disappear, reduce Noise Reduction, Noise Gate, or Smart Voice rather than adding another filter.
Spatial audio sounds hollow or confusing
- Turn off all but one spatial layer and establish a baseline.
- Compare Sonar, Windows Sonic, or a game-specific mode with the same short game scene.
- Keep the option that makes direction and distance easiest for you to identify, even if it is less dramatic.
Chat is too loud or too quiet
- Use Sonar > Chat > Test Sound > Communication, not the Game test.
- Adjust the chat equalizer and then check the mix with a real party or voice test.
- Review Noise Reduction, Noise Gate, and Smart Voice if teammates hear clipped speech or background noise.
Which configuration should I start with?
These are starting approaches, not guaranteed performance presets. Build each one with the test procedure above and then verify it in your own game.
| Use case | Starting workflow | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Competitive game audio | Use Game > Gaming audio, make restrained EQ changes, then compare one spatial layer at a time. | Directional cues remain distinct without harsh voices or fatigue. |
| Single-player or cinematic games | Balance dialogue, music, and effects with a familiar scene before deciding on spatial processing. | No single frequency range dominates the entire scene. |
| Team chat | Run the Communication test, tune chat separately, and record a Mic Test sample. | Your voice stays clear while other players remain audible over the game. |
| Noisy mechanical keyboard | Place the mic correctly, then test Impact Noise Reduction and the chat noise controls. | Keystrokes are reduced without removing consonants from your speech. |
| Phone or tablet listening | Pair Bluetooth by pressing Power once on the powered headset, then select Arctis Nova 3X Wireless. | The mobile device is using the Bluetooth connection you intentionally selected. |
When do I need a replacement microphone?
The Nova 3X uses a detachable ClearCast microphone, so a missing or damaged boom can be replaced as a separate compatible part. Confirm that a listing specifically identifies compatibility with the Arctis Nova 3X before buying; a generic 3.5-mm microphone is not automatically the correct fit or wiring.
Recommended Free Tools
If the original microphone is present but sounds poor, complete the placement and Mic Test steps first. Replacement is appropriate for physical damage or loss, not as the first response to an EQ, noise, or positioning problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Nova 3X store my Sonar EQ for every device?
The official setup instructions explain how to edit EQ in Sonar on a Windows PC but do not state that every Sonar setting is stored on the headset or transferred to consoles. Treat the target device as a separate listening path and verify its output and processing when you switch platforms.

Can I use Bluetooth and the wireless dongle at the same time?
The documented Bluetooth procedure only explains how to pair the powered headset with a phone or tablet. It does not establish a simultaneous-use mode, so do not assume that a Bluetooth connection will mix with dongle audio without checking the headset’s current behavior.
Why does my microphone sound worse after noise reduction?
Noise processing can alter speech as well as background sound when it is set too aggressively. Re-record the 15-second Mic Test, compare it with processing reduced or disabled, and then add only the minimum Impact Noise Reduction or other control needed for your room.
Which spatial-audio option is best for every game?
There is no universal choice in the documented instructions. Compare one layer at a time—Sonar, Windows Sonic, a downloadable Windows alternative, or the game’s own mode—and keep the one that makes positional sounds easiest for you to identify.
What microphone replacement fits the Nova 3X?
The headset’s included boom is a detachable ClearCast microphone. Choose a replacement that explicitly lists Arctis Nova 3X compatibility and verify the connector and regional availability before ordering.
