To adjust PS5 3D audio for headphones, connect a compatible headset, then open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones). Choose Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile, identify where each test sound appears, and then turn on Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile. You can instead use one of the five preset profiles. The separate Enable 3D Audio for Headphones switch changes headphone output between 3D audio and stereo.
PlayStation does not specify a special chair position or distance for creating the headphone profile. Its advice to sit in your normal place and remeasure after moving the TV, seat, or room applies to TV-speaker calibration, not the headphone exercise.

What does PS5 3D Audio for Headphones actually change?
PS5 3D audio processes headphone sound so game effects can appear to come from different directions instead of being limited to left and right stereo channels. The console uses either a personalized profile created through an on-screen listening exercise or one of five preset profiles.
There are two controls that are easy to confuse:
- Enable 3D Audio for Headphones turns headphone 3D processing on or off. On uses 3D audio; off returns the headphone output to stereo.
- Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile decides which profile is used while 3D audio is enabled. On uses the profile you created; off uses a preset profile.
Creating a profile does not force you to use it permanently. You can compare it with a preset, or disable headphone 3D audio and listen in stereo without deleting the profile.

What do I need before calibrating PS5 headphone audio?
You need a headphone device that works with the PS5 and is recognized by the console. PlayStation notes that not every audio device is compatible and that available options can change with the device and connection configuration.
Check the physical connection
- For a wired headset, connect it to the controller or another supported PS5 audio connection.
- For a wireless headset, complete its normal PS5 pairing or transmitter setup before opening the 3D-audio menu.
- If the PS5 does not detect the device, resolve that connection problem first; calibration controls may be unavailable until an audio output is recognized.
Use a quiet, repeatable listening condition
The profile is made by identifying test sounds. Background noise, a loose cable, or a headset that is not sitting consistently on your ears can make those judgments harder. Keep the headset positioned normally and avoid changing its fit during the prompts. This is a practical consistency measure, not a PlayStation requirement for a particular seat or room.

Do you need a particular headset model?
No specific headset purchase is required by the setup instructions. PlayStation discusses products such as PULSE Explore, PULSE 3D, and PULSE Elite in connection with PS5 audio settings, but they are examples rather than a stated requirement. Compatibility and the controls shown can vary by device.
How do I create a personalized PS5 3D audio profile?
Use the following menu path and complete every listening prompt before leaving the settings screen.
- Connect your headphones. Confirm that the PS5 is sending sound to them. If necessary, check the console’s output-device selection before starting.
- Open the audio settings. From the PS5 home screen, go to Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones).
- Start the profile exercise. Select Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile.
- Listen to each test sound. The prompts play sounds at different positions and angles. Identify where each sound appears and answer the on-screen questions about its position and direction.
- Finish the prompts. The console saves the resulting personal profile when the exercise is completed. If a prompt is unclear, concentrate on the apparent direction rather than guessing from volume alone.
- Apply the profile. Turn on Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile. If this option is off, the PS5 uses a preset instead of the profile you just created.
- Confirm that 3D processing is enabled. Make sure Enable 3D Audio for Headphones is on. A personalized profile cannot affect output when headphone 3D audio itself is disabled.
The exercise is a listening identification task, not a microphone measurement. You are not asked to enter ear dimensions, measure the room, or type in a seating distance.
Should I use a personalized profile or a preset?
Choose the personalized profile if you are willing to complete the listening exercise and want the console to use the result you created. Choose a preset if you prefer a quicker setup or do not find the test sounds easy to judge. PlayStation documents five presets but does not provide their individual names or describe which one suits a particular game, hearing profile, or seat.

| Option | What you do | What PS5 uses | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personalized profile | Listen to sounds at different positions and angles, then answer the direction questions. | Your saved profile, but only when Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile is on. | You want to complete the console’s guided adjustment and compare the result with stereo or presets. |
| Preset profile | Select one of the five available presets instead of creating a personal profile. | The selected preset when the personalized-profile option is off. | You want to skip the measurement-style listening flow or find the prompts difficult to interpret. |
| Stereo headphones | Turn off Enable 3D Audio for Headphones. | Conventional stereo output rather than PS5 headphone 3D processing. | You prefer the unprocessed presentation or want a direct comparison with 3D audio. |
Because the available documentation does not name or compare the five presets, it is not possible to identify an officially “best” preset for a specific genre, game, hearing condition, or seating position. Treat the choice as personal listening preference rather than a documented performance ranking.
Does my listening position matter when I use headphones?
PlayStation’s headphone instructions do not require a particular chair, distance from the console, or fixed listening position. You can create the profile wherever you normally wear the headset; the instructions focus on identifying the apparent position and direction of the test sounds.
What consistency is still useful?
Although no seat is prescribed, keep the headset fit consistent while answering. If you normally wear glasses, a hat, or a particular headband position, wear the headset in that normal way during calibration. Moving the ear cups between prompts can change what you hear, so restarting the exercise after a major fit change is a reasonable troubleshooting step.
What if I move to another seat later?
Moving your body around the room does not create the same room-acoustic change as moving TV speakers. With headphones, the drivers remain close to your ears, so the important repeatability factor is the headset’s fit and orientation. PlayStation does not say that you must recalibrate after changing seats, and its headphone page does not prescribe a seat-specific recalibration routine.
Why is the PS5 advice about sitting in your usual place different for TV speakers?
PS5 has a separate 3D-audio setup for TV speakers. That process uses the TV speakers and the controller microphone to measure room acoustics, so your position in the room matters. PlayStation advises sitting where you normally use the console and measuring again after changing the TV position, seating, or room environment.
Do not transfer that room-calibration instruction to headphone profile creation. Headphone calibration is the sound-identification exercise under 3D Audio (Headphones); TV-speaker measurement is a different setup with different inputs and assumptions.

| Setup | What is measured or judged | Does seat position appear in the official instruction? |
|---|---|---|
| Headphones | You listen to sounds at different apparent positions and directions and answer the prompts. | No required seat or listening distance is specified. |
| TV speakers | The controller microphone measures the room and speaker environment. | Yes. Use the normal seating position and remeasure after relevant room changes. |
How do I switch between personalized 3D audio, a preset, and stereo?
Use the controls in Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones) rather than recreating the profile each time.
- For your saved profile, leave Enable 3D Audio for Headphones on and turn on Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile.
- For a preset, leave headphone 3D audio enabled and turn off Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile. The PS5 then uses a preset profile.
- For stereo, turn off Enable 3D Audio for Headphones. This bypasses the headphone 3D mode.
These switches let you make a controlled comparison: keep the same game scene and volume, then change only one option. If you change the headset fit, game audio mix, and profile at the same time, it becomes difficult to tell which change caused the difference.

3D-audio profile selection is only one part of the console’s output path. PlayStation’s audio-output guidance includes controls for the output device, automatic device switching, headphone output selection, and headphone volume. The labels and available options can vary with the connected hardware and configuration.
Output device
Confirm that the PS5 is sending sound to the headset you are adjusting. If the console has switched to a TV, monitor, or another connected device, changing the headphone profile will not alter what you are currently hearing.
Automatic device switching
If output changes whenever a headset is connected or disconnected, check the automatic switching behavior. A profile may appear ineffective simply because the console moved audio to a different output.
Headphone output and volume
Use the headphone-output selection and volume controls to verify that the intended channels are active and that the level is comfortable. A very low level can make directional cues hard to judge, while an unexpectedly high level can make the test or game uncomfortable.

What should I do if the personalized profile does not seem to work?
Work through the symptom that matches what you see. The goal is to separate a profile-selection issue from a device or output issue.
The profile option is missing or unavailable
- Check that a compatible headphone device is connected and recognized.
- Review the output-device selection; the PS5 may currently be using another output.
- Disconnect and reconnect the headset, then reopen Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones).
- Remember that settings can vary by device and configuration, so an option shown for one headset may not appear for another.
I created a profile but hear no difference
- Verify that Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile is on.
- Verify that Enable 3D Audio for Headphones is also on; the personal profile has no effect in stereo mode.
- Make sure the PS5 is actually outputting to the calibrated headphones.
- Compare the same game scene with the profile enabled, a preset selected, and 3D audio disabled. Keep volume and headset fit unchanged during the comparison.
The direction prompts were hard to answer
- Repeat the exercise in a quieter room.
- Wear the headset in its normal position and keep the ear cups aligned throughout.
- Listen for apparent direction and position, not merely which side sounds louder.
- If the result remains unhelpful, use a preset instead; the five presets are an officially supported alternative.
The sound is too loud or uncomfortable
Lower headphone volume before repeating the prompts. Do not try to compensate for a difficult listening test by raising the level excessively.
Is Audio Focus part of 3D-audio calibration?
No. Audio Focus is a separate headphone feature intended to emphasize quiet sounds in certain frequency ranges. It is not a required step for creating or applying a 3D-audio profile.
PlayStation says headphones are required for Audio Focus, recommends checking the volume because sounds may be loud, and requires current system software. Configure it independently after your 3D-audio choice is working, so you can identify which feature changes the sound.
How can I compare settings without fooling myself?
A short, controlled comparison is more useful than repeatedly rebuilding the profile.
- Choose a game scene with steady environmental or positional sounds.
- Set a comfortable volume and keep the headset fit unchanged.
- Listen with your personalized profile applied.
- Switch to a preset by turning off Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile, then listen to the same scene.
- Turn off Enable 3D Audio for Headphones for a stereo comparison.
- Write down which presentation you prefer for that game and switch back to the desired setting.
This process does not establish that one mode is objectively superior. It simply prevents unrelated changes from being mistaken for an improvement.

When should I recreate the profile?
There is no documented requirement to recreate a headphone profile after moving to another seat. Consider repeating the exercise when the headset itself, its fit, or the listening conditions change enough that the original direction judgments no longer seem reliable. If the headset is replaced, treat the new device as a fresh setup because compatibility and available controls can differ.
For TV speakers, follow the separate room-measurement logic: use the usual seating position and measure again after changing the TV position, seating, or room environment. That rule belongs to the TV-speaker setup, not the headphone profile.
What are the practical limits of PS5 headphone 3D audio?
- It is device-dependent. Not all audio devices work with PS5, and the settings shown can vary with the device and configuration.
- It is not a room correction system. The headphone exercise does not ask you to measure your room or enter a seat distance.
- Preset details are limited. Five presets are documented, but their names and intended differences are not provided in the cited setup instructions.
- It is not a hearing test. The prompts ask where sounds appear, not whether your hearing meets a clinical standard.
- Game support can affect what you notice. The console setting controls headphone processing, but a particular game may provide its own audio mix or positional cues.
These limits explain why a careful setup can still produce a result you do not prefer. The available choices are profile, preset, or stereo, and the best choice is the one that remains comfortable and intelligible with your own headset and games.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use PS5 3D audio with any headset?
No. PlayStation says not all audio devices work with the console, and available audio settings vary by device and configuration. Connect the headset first and confirm that the PS5 recognizes it before expecting the 3D-audio controls to appear.
Does PS5 3D audio change the game’s master volume?
The 3D-audio profile controls how headphone sound is spatially presented; headphone loudness is handled separately through the console’s volume controls and the headset itself. If a test tone is uncomfortable, reduce the volume rather than trying to correct the profile.
Can two people share one personalized PS5 headphone profile?
A profile is created from one listener’s answers to the direction prompts, so another person may prefer a different result. The console also provides presets, which can be useful when different listeners use the same headset.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why does a headset sound different when connected to the controller versus another connection?
The PS5 can expose different options depending on the connected device and configuration. Confirm the active output device and review the headphone-output settings whenever you change how the headset is connected.
Do I need to recalibrate after changing the game’s audio settings?
Changing a game’s mix or audio mode does not, by itself, change the saved PS5 profile. Recheck the profile only if the headset fit, device, or your ability to judge the prompts has changed; compare game settings separately.
