To change Xbox privacy or online-safety permissions, open the guide with the Xbox button and go to Profile & system > Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety. Choose Xbox privacy, select View details & customize, and edit the permission category you need. Child accounts normally require a family organizer to make these changes.
Open the privacy controls on an Xbox console
The current console route begins in the Xbox guide. The wording can move slightly after a dashboard update, so look for the nearest current Privacy & online safety entry if a label is not in exactly the same place.

- Press the Xbox button on the controller to open the guide.
- Open Profile & system.
- Select Settings.
- Open Account, then choose Privacy & online safety.
- Select Xbox privacy.
- Choose View details & customize.
- Open the category that matches the activity you want to control, change the permission, and use the page’s save or submit command when one is shown.
These controls are account permissions, not a single master switch. You may need to edit more than one category when a game involves voice chat, multiplayer, cross-network play, and social features at the same time.

Xbox presents settings by activity and audience. The exact grouping and labels can vary by account and dashboard version, but the following map shows where to start.

Do not assume that changing one row changes every related feature. For example, permitting multiplayer does not necessarily change who can contact the account, and allowing communication does not by itself grant permission to join online games. Review each relevant row before leaving the page.
Everyone, Friends, and Block
Use Everyone when the account should interact with any permitted Xbox or cross-network audience for that activity. Choose Friends when interaction should be limited to accounts already connected as friends. Choose Block when the activity should be disabled for that permission. Not every account or activity exposes all three choices; use only the options shown on the screen.
Enable online multiplayer
If a game reports that the account cannot play online multiplayer, inspect the online-safety permissions for the platform associated with the account. The relevant section is labeled Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One/Windows 10 Online Safety in Microsoft’s documented troubleshooting flow.
- Open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety.
- Enter Xbox privacy > View details & customize.
- Open the Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One/Windows 10 Online Safety controls.
- Find You can join multiplayer games.
- Set that permission to the audience level you intend to allow, then save or submit if the page presents that action.
If the account belongs to a family group, the account holder may not be able to edit this permission. A family organizer must change it through the family-management workflow described below. After editing, return to the game and test the specific multiplayer mode that was blocked; different modes can use different permissions.

Change settings for a child or other family member
Family-member controls are managed by an organizer rather than by the child account itself. On the console, the organizer starts in family settings and then opens the selected member’s Xbox privacy details.
- Open the console’s Family settings.
- Select Manage family members.
- Choose the family member whose permissions need to change.
- Open Privacy & online safety.
- Select Xbox Live privacy, then View details & customize.
- Edit the communication, multiplayer, cross-network-play, social, or content-sharing permission required for that member.
- Use the available save or submit command before leaving the page.
If a child says a setting is unavailable or cannot be changed, first confirm that the organizer is signed in and has selected the correct family member. Editing the organizer’s own profile will not change the child’s permissions.
Set a permission without opening unrelated controls
For a narrowly defined change, alter only the row connected to the problem. For example, if the goal is to allow participation in online matches while keeping social-following controls unchanged, edit You can join multiplayer games and leave Friends, followers & clubs alone. This keeps the account’s existing audience choices intact.

Adjust settings from Xbox.com
Microsoft supports changing Xbox privacy settings on either a console or Xbox.com. The web route is useful when the controller is unavailable or when a family organizer needs to manage an account from another device.

- Sign in to the Microsoft/Xbox privacy surface with the account that should be managed.
- Select the Xbox privacy controls.
- Open the permission category related to the activity: communication, multiplayer, cross-network play, social connections, or content sharing.
- Choose the available audience or permission value.
- Use the page’s Save, Submit, or equivalent confirmation control.
For a family member, sign in as the organizer and select the member whose settings are being managed. The web interface may use different grouping or wording from the console, so match the activity rather than relying only on the position of a menu item.
Turn voice or text communication on or off
Communication permissions are handled in the privacy and online-safety details page. Open Communication & multiplayer and review the voice- and text-communication rows. Select the desired audience, or choose Block when communication should be disabled for that permission.
Communication and multiplayer are separate decisions. An account can be allowed to join a multiplayer game while communication with other players is restricted, or communication can be permitted while multiplayer participation remains blocked. Edit both areas when the intended result involves both playing and talking.

Cross-network play is listed with communication and multiplayer permissions. If a game needs interaction with players outside the Xbox network, open the cross-network-play permission and choose the audience level shown for the account. If cross-network interaction should be prevented, select the blocking option offered for that row.

Because labels can vary by dashboard version and account, read the full row before changing it. Do not treat a general multiplayer permission as proof that cross-network play is also enabled; verify the cross-network entry separately.
Manage friend requests, followers, and clubs
Social-connection controls are under Friends, followers & clubs. Xbox documents this category as the place to manage who can send friend requests or follow the account directly from the console.
- Open Xbox privacy > View details & customize.
- Select Friends, followers & clubs.
- Review the friend-request and following permissions.
- Choose the audience that fits the account, then save or submit if prompted.
These settings address social connections. They do not replace the separate communication, multiplayer, or content-sharing permissions.

Privacy audience controls determine whether information or activity is shared with the public or with friends. Content-sharing controls address the account’s ability to share relevant game or profile content. Open each permission’s details and choose the narrowest audience that meets the account’s needs.

A practical setup for a private account
- Use Friends for social visibility when the account should not be broadly discoverable.
- Use Block for communication or content-sharing activities that should be unavailable.
- Leave multiplayer at the level required by the games the account actually plays.
- Review cross-network play separately instead of assuming it follows the multiplayer choice.
A practical setup for a child who plays with known friends
- Keep social-following and friend-request permissions limited to the audience the organizer considers appropriate.
- Allow multiplayer only if the organizer wants the child to join online games.
- Set communication independently, since playing with friends does not require unrestricted voice or text contact.
- Recheck content-sharing permissions if the child needs to share clips or other game content.
These are decision examples, not additional Xbox presets. Select the actual values displayed for the account.
Troubleshoot a setting that is missing or ineffective
The account cannot edit its own setting
Check whether the account is a child or other family-group member. Family members generally need the organizer to change safety permissions. Have the organizer open Family settings > Manage family members, select the account, and then enter its Xbox Live privacy details.
Multiplayer is still blocked
- Return to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One/Windows 10 Online Safety.
- Confirm the You can join multiplayer games permission, not only a general communication setting.
- If the account is in a family group, verify that the organizer edited the correct member.
- Check the game again after saving the permission.
Voice chat works differently from multiplayer
Review the communication rows separately from multiplayer. A multiplayer permission controls participation in online games; communication permissions govern voice or text interaction. Change the row that matches the behavior you want to correct.
A menu label does not match these instructions
Xbox dashboard labels and grouping can change. Start from Profile & system > Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety, then look for Xbox privacy, View details & customize, or the nearest equivalent. Once inside, identify the activity by name rather than by its position in the list.
The web page and console show different layouts
Use the same account and compare the activity being edited, not the visual layout. Both surfaces expose Xbox privacy controls, but the available choices and labels can vary by account and dashboard version. Save the change on the surface where you made it, then reopen the permission to verify the displayed value.

A complete change-and-check checklist
- Identify the exact behavior to change: joining multiplayer, voice or text communication, cross-network play, friend requests, following, or content sharing.
- Identify the account role: adult account, child account, or another family-group member.
- Open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety on the console, or use the Xbox.com privacy surface.
- For a family member, have the organizer select Family settings > Manage family members and choose the correct account.
- Enter Xbox privacy > View details & customize (or the equivalent family-member path).
- Change only the permission needed, using the audience choice shown for that row.
- Save or submit the change when prompted.
- Reopen the permission to confirm the selected value.
- Test the affected feature, such as joining a multiplayer session or sending a permitted message.
- If the feature remains blocked, return to the activity-specific permission and check whether a family organizer must make the edit.
What to remember
The reliable starting point is Profile & system > Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety. From there, Xbox privacy > View details & customize exposes the activity-level controls. Multiplayer access depends on the online-safety permission You can join multiplayer games; communication, cross-network play, social connections, and content sharing have their own controls. Child and family-member permissions are managed by an organizer, and the same Xbox privacy settings can be reached from Xbox.com.
