To manually replay a MySQL binary log, inspect the exact file-and-position range, then pipe mysqlbinlog output into the mysql client:
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
mysqlbinlog binlog.000123 | mysql -u root -p
For a replica that already has replication configured, stop or isolate its normal receiver and applier threads first. Begin at the source coordinates that match the replica’s consistent snapshot, use a deliberately bounded range when possible, and validate replication and application data afterward. The commands below target MySQL 8.4 syntax documented as of October 15, 2026; check privilege names and replication syntax against the exact version running in production.

What manual binary-log replay does
A MySQL binary log records changes made on a source server. mysqlbinlog reads those events and writes a stream containing SQL statements and, when needed, generated BINLOG statements. The mysql client executes that stream on the target server. This is an execution procedure, not a file copy: every insert, update, delete, DDL operation, and other logged event is run again against the target.
The method is useful when you need exact control over a file and position range, the source is temporarily unavailable to normal replication, or you are recovering to a point in time. It is also a high-risk operation. A snapshot that does not match the selected starting coordinate, a wrong stop position, filtering differences, or a second applier writing at the same time can leave the replica divergent from the source.

For row-based events, this inspection command makes row changes readable:
mysqlbinlog --base64-output=DECODE-ROWS --verbose
--start-position=START_POS --stop-position=STOP_POS binlog.000123 | less
The decoded output is for review. Replay must use the normal event representation produced by mysqlbinlog; decoding row events for display does not turn the review output into a substitute replay stream.

Prepare the replica and preserve a recovery trail
Start with a consistent snapshot
Manual replay must continue from a known-good snapshot or dump on the replica. Record the source binary-log file and position that correspond to that snapshot. The first event you apply must be after the changes already included in the snapshot; starting earlier can duplicate changes, while starting later can omit them.
- Use a consistent logical dump or another snapshot method that records source coordinates.
- Keep the snapshot identifier, source host, binary-log filename, and position together in the incident record.
- Do not treat the current replica position as the snapshot coordinate unless the snapshot process explicitly established that relationship.
Verify the topology
Binary logging must be enabled on the source. Every server in the topology must have a unique, nonzero server_id. Duplicate or zero IDs can prevent correct replication behavior and make event provenance difficult to establish.
Stop competing appliers
If the target is a configured replica, stop or isolate its normal receiver and applier threads before replaying events manually. Two appliers changing the same tables concurrently can interleave transactions, produce duplicate-key or missing-row errors, and make the final coordinates ambiguous. Schedule a maintenance window or use a disposable recovery instance when the data is important.
Check execution privileges
The account executing generated binary-log statements needs BINLOG_ADMIN in current MySQL versions, or the deprecated SUPER privilege where that is still accepted. An account with REPLICATION_APPLIER also needs the privileges required by every event it will execute, such as permissions for the affected databases, tables, routines, and DDL. A login that can connect but lacks an event-specific privilege will stop partway through the stream.

Keep evidence before changing state
Preserve the original binary-log files, the exact commands used, command output, replica status, and relevant error logs. Do this before resetting replication metadata or discarding files. Those records are needed to prove which events were applied and to recover if the chosen range was wrong.
Choose safe binary-log coordinates
File and position mode
A file-position replica identifies the next source event with two values: a binary-log filename and a byte position. The snapshot’s recorded pair is the starting point. In a binary-log file, position 4 denotes the start of the events. It is therefore a valid low-level coordinate, but it is not automatically the correct position for your snapshot; use the snapshot’s recorded coordinate whenever one exists.
| Coordinate | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Binary-log filename | The source log containing the next event | Example: binlog.000123 |
| Byte position | Where event processing begins in that file | The snapshot’s recorded position; 4 is the start of events in a file |
| Stop position | The upper boundary of an inspection or replay range | Use only after reviewing the event and transaction boundaries |
Respect transaction boundaries
Do not choose a stop position in the middle of a transaction merely because it is a convenient byte offset. Identify the complete event group or transaction you intend to apply. A range that ends partway through a transaction can leave statements unapplied or create a target state that never existed on the source.
GTID mode
If both source and replica use GTIDs, prefer automatic positioning rather than manually maintaining file and position values. Configure SOURCE_AUTO_POSITION = 1 and do not combine it with SOURCE_LOG_FILE or SOURCE_LOG_POS. Mixing the two positioning methods makes the intended restart point unclear and is rejected by the configuration syntax.

Inspection is the point at which you catch an incorrect file, an unexpected schema change, an unwanted database, or a transaction boundary problem. Review the range on a system where output can be retained:
mysqlbinlog --base64-output=DECODE-ROWS --verbose
--start-position=START_POS
--stop-position=STOP_POS
binlog.000123 | less
Confirm all of the following before applying:
- The filename is from the intended source and belongs to the snapshot’s timeline.
- The starting position is the first event not already represented in the snapshot.
- The range contains the expected databases, tables, and transaction groups.
- Row events shown in verbose output correspond to the changes you expect; remember that this display is diagnostic, not the replay input.
- The stop position does not cut through a transaction or event group you need to keep atomic.
When consecutive files are required, list them in chronological order. Retain the inspection output and the final command so another operator can reproduce the decision.

Apply local binary-log files
Replay one bounded range
After review, execute the same range without the row-decoding display options:
mysqlbinlog --start-position=START_POS --stop-position=STOP_POS
binlog.000123 | mysql --binary-mode=1 -u root -p
The password prompt keeps the credential out of the shell command. --binary-mode=1 tells the client to handle the stream as binary-safe input, which is important when mysqlbinlog emits generated BINLOG statements.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Replay several consecutive files
Supply files in source order when the required range crosses a rotation boundary:
mysqlbinlog --start-position=START_POS --stop-position=STOP_POS
binlog.000123 binlog.000124 binlog.000125
| mysql --binary-mode=1 -u root -p
Use a start position only for the first file unless your reviewed range requires additional boundaries. Keep the original files unchanged; do not rename or edit them to make the command shorter.
Capture the result
Redirect terminal output to a protected incident log if your operating procedure permits it, and record the exit status. A successful client connection does not prove that every event succeeded: inspect the output for SQL errors and verify the resulting replica state before declaring completion.
Replay logs that are remote or encrypted at rest
When the binary-log files are not present locally, stream them from the source with --read-from-remote-server (short form -R):

mysqlbinlog --read-from-remote-server
--host=source.example --port=3306
--user=binlog_reader --password
--ssl-mode=VERIFY_IDENTITY
binlog.000123 | mysql --binary-mode=1 -u root -p
The source account should be limited to the access needed to read binary logs, and the target account should be separate. Use protected transport. MySQL documents VERIFY_CA or VERIFY_IDENTITY in preference to REQUIRED when possible, because the stronger modes verify the server certificate rather than merely encrypting the connection.
Remote reading does not remove coordinate or snapshot requirements. You still need the source file and position that match the target snapshot, and you should inspect a bounded range before sending it to the target. For encrypted-at-rest logs, perform the read through the source’s supported remote interface rather than copying decrypted files into an unprotected location.
Return to normal replication
File-position configuration
After the manually applied range reaches the point at which normal replication should resume, configure the replica with the next source coordinate. A typical file-position configuration is:
CHANGE REPLICATION SOURCE TO
SOURCE_HOST='source_host',
SOURCE_USER='replication_user',
SOURCE_PASSWORD='password',
SOURCE_LOG_FILE='binlog.000123',
SOURCE_LOG_POS=START_POS;
START REPLICA;
Use the coordinate of the next event to be fetched, not the last byte you happened to inspect. Position 4 means the start of events in a binary-log file; it does not mean “resume at the snapshot” unless that is the coordinate your snapshot recorded.

GTID automatic positioning
For a GTID topology, configure SOURCE_AUTO_POSITION = 1 and omit file-and-position options. The replica uses its executed GTID set to request transactions it has not applied. Do not combine automatic positioning with SOURCE_LOG_FILE or SOURCE_LOG_POS.
Restart deliberately after manual replay
Start the replica only after checking that the manual replay completed, the target is no longer being modified by another process, and the restart coordinates represent the next unapplied source event. Starting too early can cause the normal applier to overlap the manual stream; starting with an old coordinate can execute the same transaction twice.

Validate data and replication state
Run SHOW REPLICA STATUS after replay and again after restarting replication. Review the source and replica coordinates, receiver and applier errors, executed GTID sets where applicable, and the timestamps or lag indicators exposed by the status output.
Validation should include both replication metadata and application data:
- Compare the source file and position with the replica’s fetched and executed coordinates.
- For GTID replication, compare executed GTID sets and confirm the expected transactions are present.
- Check application-level row counts for tables affected by the replay.
- Use checksums or another approved consistency check for critical tables when row counts alone cannot detect changed values.
- Review the server error log and the captured
mysqloutput for warnings, skipped statements, or privilege failures.
Applying a binary log reexecutes data modifications. A mismatched snapshot, filtering rule, wrong coordinate, or concurrent applier can therefore create divergence even when the command itself exits without an obvious shell error. If validation finds a mismatch, stop replication and preserve the source and replica logs and status output before attempting a reset.
Handle failures without guessing
Privilege or syntax error
Stop the replay, record the first failing statement and error number, and correct the account or version-specific syntax before rerunning. Do not blindly restart from the beginning: events before the failure may already have committed. Determine the last successfully applied transaction boundary and resume from the next valid event group.
Duplicate-key or already-applied error
This commonly indicates that the snapshot coordinate was wrong, a portion of the range was replayed previously, or the normal applier was still running. Stop both replication threads, compare the recorded snapshot coordinate with the target’s executed state, and identify whether the transaction committed before the error. Rerunning the entire range can create additional duplicates.
Missing-row or schema error
A missing-row error can indicate divergence before the selected range; a schema error can indicate that required DDL was omitted or that the target schema differs from the source. Preserve the failing event, inspect preceding transaction groups, and compare the affected table definition and filters. Repairing the underlying mismatch may require rebuilding the replica rather than skipping the event.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Skipping a failed transaction
Skipping is a controlled data-integrity decision, not a routine workaround. Stop the receiver and applier, identify the next valid event-group or transaction boundary, and set restart coordinates deliberately. A wrong coordinate can skip part of a transaction or replay an event twice. Before resetting replication state, preserve the binary logs, status output, and error logs so the skipped transaction can be audited and, if necessary, repaired at the application level.
Manual replay or restart replication?
| Decision factor | Manual replay | Restarting configured replication |
|---|---|---|
| Range control | Exact file and position range can be inspected and executed | Applier follows the configured file-position or GTID stream |
| Source reachability | Can use local files; remote reading is also available | Requires a functioning replication connection to the source |
| Topology model | Works with a reviewed file-position range and generated event stream | Uses file-position coordinates or GTID automatic positioning already configured |
| Privileges | Target account needs BINLOG_ADMIN or deprecated SUPER, or REPLICATION_APPLIER plus privileges required by each event |
Uses the privileges configured for the replication applier and source connection |
| Transaction risk | Operator chooses boundaries; an incorrect boundary can split or duplicate a transaction | Replication machinery tracks event order and transaction application |
| Auditability | Commands, reviewed output, and preserved files provide a precise replay record | Status history and server logs document the automated path |
| Rollback options | There is no automatic undo; recovery may require restoring a snapshot | There is no automatic undo for committed source events either, but the configured stream avoids ad hoc coordinate changes |
| Replica consistency | Safe only when the snapshot, filters, and selected range match | Best when the existing replica state and source metadata are already consistent |
Choose manual replay when precise range control or local evidence is the requirement and you can verify coordinates. Prefer normal replication when the source is reachable, the replica’s state is trustworthy, and GTID or file-position metadata can resume without intervention.
