Close the store page, wait at least overnight, then return only if you can name when you will play the game, it fills a genuine gap in your library, and the purchase still fits your remaining budget. Steam’s purchase history and refund policy are useful safeguards, but neither replaces a pause before spending.
Why Steam discounts make “just one more game” difficult
A sale changes the question from “Do I want this game enough to buy it?” to “How much money would I save by buying it now?” That framing can make a low price feel like a reason to purchase, even when the game will sit unplayed. The practical cost is not only the price. You also spend time evaluating the store page, downloading the game, installing updates, testing it, and deciding whether to keep or refund it.

A discount does not create additional free time. If your library already contains games that meet the same need—such as a short single-player campaign, a cooperative game for friends, or a strategy game for long sessions—the new purchase must compete with those games for the hours you actually have.
There is no reliable published statistic that quantifies impulse buying specifically during Steam seasonal sales. You therefore cannot use a supposed average or conversion rate to predict your own behavior. A personal process with a spending ceiling, a library check, and a delay is more useful than an unsupported percentage.

Set a hard sale budget before opening the store
Choose one amount for the whole sale before you browse. Treat it as a ceiling, not as a target you are expected to spend. Include games, downloadable content and bundles in the same total if you might buy them. Keep the amount separate from money needed for rent, bills, food, savings or purchases you have already planned.
Make the ceiling difficult to reinterpret
- Write the amount in a note or on paper before visiting the store.
- Record each completed purchase immediately and subtract it from the remaining balance.
- Do not increase the ceiling because a bundle appears to offer a larger percentage discount.
- When the remaining balance reaches zero, stop shopping for that sale.
The relevant comparison is money spent and games played, not the amount of discount displayed beside a price. Spending an additional amount to “save” more is still additional spending.
Use a simple running-total table

Define what qualifies before you see tempting deals
A per-game rule prevents the store page from changing your standards. Decide the kinds of games that are eligible for this sale, then apply the same test to every title.

Useful qualification rules
- Genre or mood: limit purchases to categories you genuinely expect to play, rather than buying an unfamiliar genre only because the discount is large.
- Player context: decide whether the game must support your preferred solo, local or online play. If a multiplayer purchase depends on friends being available, identify when that group will actually play.
- Session length: match the game to your available blocks of time. A long campaign is a poor fit if you currently have only short sessions.
- Specific use: require a concrete reason, such as a planned weekend, a trip, a co-op night or a missing entry in a series you are already playing.
- Price boundary: set a maximum amount per game if a whole-sale ceiling alone still lets several small purchases accumulate.
Write these rules in the same note as your budget. “It is cheap” is not a qualification; “I will play this cooperative game with my group on Saturday” is.
Use your existing library as the first gate
Before adding a new title, search your Steam library for an unplayed or unfinished game that supplies the same experience. Check installed games, uninstalled purchases and games you already marked for later. If one of them meets the current mood or genre need, play that first or explain why the new game is genuinely different.

A quick library check
- State what you want to play now: for example, a 30-minute solo session or a cooperative game for four people.
- Search your library for games that match that description.
- Identify whether you already own an unplayed match.
- If you do, put the sale title on your Wishlist instead of buying it. Return only if the sale title still has a specific advantage you can use soon.
This check addresses the opportunity cost directly. A new game cannot be played during hours already committed to a game you own.
Wishlist every candidate before checkout
Steam’s Wishlist is a reversible holding place. Steam’s Wishlist help instructions say to open a game’s storefront page and click Add to your Wishlist. Steam Support also describes the Wishlist as a way to receive a notification when a game you want goes on sale.
Steam’s Wishlist Notifications page says: “We’ll let you know by email or through our mobile app when the games on your Wishlist are on sale as a Daily Deal, Midweek Deal or Weekend Deal.” That page also says you can opt out of email notifications or turn off mobile notifications. Adding a game to the Wishlist therefore preserves a route back to it without turning curiosity into a purchase.
The Wishlist-and-close procedure
- Open the game’s storefront page.
- Check the title against your qualification rules and library gate.
- Click Add to your Wishlist.
- Close the store page and return to your running-total note.
- Do not add the game to your cart during this first pass.
Steamworks documentation says players use Wishlists to track games and are automatically notified when a game releases or goes on discount. It also notes that discount emails generally have a one- to two-week cooldown, which may be extended when notification traffic is high, such as during seasonal sales. That cooldown is a notification-system behavior, not a promise that a game will remain at a particular price.
Apply a cooling-off period
Wait at least overnight after wishlisting a tempting game. For an expensive bundle, a purchase outside your normal genres or anything that would consume most of the remaining budget, wait longer. This delay is a personal rule, not a Steam requirement; its purpose is to separate an initial reaction from a considered decision.

Ask three questions when the delay ends
- When will I play it? Name a realistic date or session, not a vague intention to play someday.
- Would I want it without the discount? You do not have to pay the regular price, but the question reveals whether the game itself is attractive or the percentage-off label is doing all the work.
- Does it fit the remaining budget? Recalculate after essentials and already-planned purchases. A game that fit yesterday may not fit after another purchase today.
If you cannot answer one of the questions, leave the title on the Wishlist. Nothing is lost by waiting for another notification or another sale.

Notifications are useful when they remind you about a game you deliberately chose. They are counterproductive when every alert makes you open the store without a plan. Steam explicitly allows Wishlist email notifications to be opted out of and mobile notifications to be turned off in its notification settings.
Choose the least tempting notification setup
- Keep notifications on if they help you monitor a small, intentional Wishlist.
- Disable email alerts if sale messages lead you to browse categories rather than check a specific game.
- Turn off mobile notifications if phone alerts prompt reflexive store visits.
- Review and prune the Wishlist so it represents games you might actually play, not every interesting page you have opened.
Blocking a trigger does not replace a budget. It simply reduces the number of unplanned decisions you have to make.
Audit your purchases and spending in Steam
Use Steam’s own records instead of relying on memory. Steam Support places purchase history at Account Details > View purchase history. Open that page before or during a sale to see what you have already bought and to maintain an accurate running total.
What the audit can reveal
- A game you forgot you owned, making a new purchase unnecessary.
- A previous edition, season pass or bundle that overlaps with the title you are considering.
- Several small purchases whose combined total is larger than any one decision felt at the time.
- A purchase made earlier in the sale that leaves less budget than you assumed.
Checking history takes only a few minutes, but it exposes duplication and makes the hard ceiling visible. Perform the check before checkout, not only after you regret a purchase.

Choose the control that fits your failure mode
Different safeguards solve different problems. Use the comparison below to decide where to add friction.

Most people benefit from combining a whole-sale ceiling with Wishlist-and-delay. Add notification blocking when alerts themselves are the trigger, and use the library audit when your main problem is buying games you already effectively own.
Evaluate bundles without letting the discount decide
A bundle can make several individual games appear inexpensive, but the bundle still consumes the full amount charged and your limited play time. Apply your normal rules to the contents.
Bundle questions
- Which specific item will you play first, and when?
- How many included games do you already own or have on your Wishlist?
- Would you buy the bundle if only the first game were included?
- Does the total fit the remaining sale ceiling after accounting for planned purchases?
If you cannot identify a near-term use for most of the bundle, the unplayed items are not free value. Wishlist the individual game that interests you, if available, and leave the bundle alone.
Use refunds as a backstop, not as a shopping method
Steam’s refund page says eligible games and software are generally covered when the request is made within 14 days of purchase and total playtime is under two hours, subject to the policy’s conditions. “Generally” matters: eligibility can depend on the product and circumstances, so check the current policy before relying on it.

Steam also states: “We do not consider it abuse to request a refund on a title that was purchased just before a sale and then immediately rebuying that title for the sale price.” This addresses a price change after a legitimate purchase; it is not permission to buy every tempting game and decide later.
Why a refund does not erase an impulse purchase
- You still spend time choosing, downloading and testing the game.
- You must notice the problem and submit the request promptly.
- Refund eligibility is conditional, not automatic.
- A refund may return money but cannot return the hours spent or eliminate the browsing habit that caused the purchase.
If a purchase genuinely fails your test, stop playing it, review the current Steam refund policy and act within the stated window. Do not deliberately use refunds as a trial library.
Examples of the decision process
A cheap game that duplicates your backlog
You see a large discount on a game in a genre you enjoy. Your library already contains two unplayed games with the same type of campaign. Add the sale title to your Wishlist, note the overlap, and keep the budget available. Reconsider only when you can name a session for it and explain what the existing games cannot provide.

The bundle would consume most of your remaining ceiling and includes several games you would not normally choose. Leave the store page, wait longer than overnight, and apply the three questions. If there is no scheduled play time and no reason you would want the games without the discount, do not buy it.
A title bought just before the sale
If a game you purchased recently goes on sale, consult Steam’s current refund conditions. Steam says that requesting a refund and immediately rebuying at the sale price is not considered abuse when the title otherwise qualifies. Make the decision promptly rather than waiting until the eligibility window is nearly over.
What to do after you reach the cap
Once the running total reaches your ceiling, stop opening sale pages for that event. Keep interesting titles on the Wishlist and let its notifications provide a future decision point. Do not reinterpret the cap as “the amount I should spend”; an unspent budget is a successful outcome.
If you discover that you have already exceeded the ceiling, stop browsing, record the actual total in your purchase note and identify any purchase that genuinely fails the game, time and budget tests. For an eligible title, consult Steam’s refund policy promptly. For the rest, remove sale notifications temporarily and return to your library rather than trying to justify the overspend with another purchase.
