How to Back Up a Minecraft Server (Java, Bedrock, Realms, and Hosted Servers)

Stop the server, flush its world data, copy the complete directory, keep dated off-site versions, and test a restore. This guide explains the differences between Java, Bedrock, Realms, and hosted Minecraft servers.

The safest Minecraft server backup is a clean copy of the complete server directory, made after the server has flushed its world data and stopped. Announce maintenance, run save-all, run stop, wait for the process to exit, copy the directory to a dated location on another disk or host, and test restoring that copy in a separate directory. save-all only writes current changes to disk; it is not a second backup.

This guide covers Java Edition (Vanilla, Paper, Spigot, Fabric, and Forge), Bedrock Dedicated Server, Realms, and third-party hosting. It also gives a retention policy, Windows and Linux examples, an automated workflow, and a restoration procedure that does not destroy your newest data.

What a Minecraft server backup must contain

There are two sensible scopes. A world-only backup is smaller and may be enough when you only need the playable map. A disaster-recovery backup should preserve everything needed to recreate the running server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Scope Include What it cannot reliably recover
World-only The directory named by level-name in server.properties; commonly world. On Java, include all dimensions as stored by your server software. Bedrock worlds normally sit under the server’s worlds directory. Plugins, mods, permissions, bans, startup settings, and configuration stored outside the world.
Complete server The entire installation directory, including worlds, server.properties, allowlist/whitelist, operators, bans, relevant caches, plugins or mods, their configuration, datapacks, resource-pack files, loader settings, startup scripts, and retention scripts. Anything stored outside that directory, such as an external database or a host-managed panel setting, unless separately exported.

Minecraft Wiki recommends copying the whole server directory after a clean shutdown. Paper’s update guidance likewise calls out world folders, server configuration, plugin configuration, and plugin JARs, and recommends rolling backups from multiple points in time (Minecraft Wiki server maintenance; Paper updating documentation).

Java world folders and dimensions

The exact layout depends on the server software and version. Vanilla commonly keeps the Nether and End in the world directory. Paper installations often use separate directories such as world_nether and world_the_end. Back up every directory associated with the active level, not just the folder that looks like the Overworld.

Modded servers

Fabric and Forge servers should retain mods/, config/, loader files, scripts, and any mod-specific directories in addition to the worlds. Preserve exact mod versions where possible. A world can open while missing a mod’s blocks, entities, claims, economy data, or configuration.

Secrets and external data

RCON passwords, database credentials, webhook URLs, and private keys may be inside configuration files. Keep the backup private and encrypt off-site copies. If a plugin or management tool stores data outside the server directory, export that data separately and record its location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest manual backup method

  1. Announce maintenance. Ask players to stop building, trading, redstone activity, and other changes. Confirm that the destination has enough free space and that you are not about to overwrite your only prior backup.
  2. Flush world changes. From the server console, enter save-all without a leading slash. An authorized operator in game uses /save-all.
  3. Stop the server. Enter stop in the console, or /stop in authorized in-game chat. Wait until the process exits and is no longer writing files.
  4. Copy the complete directory. Copy the live installation, preserving its internal structure. A useful naming pattern is survival-2026-08-18-22-00 or minecraft-2026-08-18_22-00-00-1.21.x-paper.
  5. Put a copy somewhere independent. Use another physical disk, another machine, or encrypted cloud storage. A second folder on the same disk does not protect against disk failure.
  6. Verify it. Open the archive, check that the world and configuration files are present, and record the Minecraft version, server software, loader version, Java version, and startup arguments.
  7. Restart the original installation. Start the live directory, not the backup copy. Confirm that the world loads, the allowlist works, plugins or mods initialize, and the log reports no new save or region errors.

A compressed archive is convenient, but an archive that was created successfully is not automatically restorable. Open it and perform a test restore on a schedule.

Java Edition: Windows and Linux details

Windows manual backup

  1. Stop the server cleanly using the procedure above.
  2. In File Explorer, right-click the server directory and choose Compress to ZIP file on supported Windows versions, or use a trusted archive utility.
  3. Rename the ZIP with the server name, date, time, and software version.
  4. Copy it to another drive or a protected cloud-synchronized destination.
  5. Open the ZIP and check for the active world folders, server.properties, plugin or mod directories, and configuration files.

For scheduled jobs, PowerShell can create a dated archive after the server has already stopped:

$Server = 'C:MinecraftSurvival'
$BackupRoot = 'D:Minecraft-Backups'
$Stamp = Get-Date -Format 'yyyy-MM-dd_HH-mm-ss'
$Archive = Join-Path $BackupRoot "minecraft-$Stamp.zip"

New-Item -ItemType Directory -Force -Path $BackupRoot | Out-Null
Compress-Archive -Path $Server -DestinationPath $Archive

Change both paths. This example does not stop the server, verify the archive, prune old files, or upload off-site; those are production requirements rather than automatic features of Compress-Archive.

Linux manual and systemd patterns

A generic archive pattern is:

#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -euo pipefail

SERVER_DIR="/srv/minecraft"
BACKUP_DIR="/srv/minecraft-backups"
STAMP="$(date +%Y-%m-%d_%H-%M-%S)"

mkdir -p "$BACKUP_DIR"

# The server must be cleanly stopped before this point.
tar -czf "$BACKUP_DIR/minecraft-$STAMP.tar.gz"
  -C "$(dirname "$SERVER_DIR")"
  "$(basename "$SERVER_DIR")"

The paths are examples and must be changed. The script assumes a clean shutdown; it does not send save-all or stop, apply retention, test extraction, or alert on failure.

With a systemd service, the operational shape is:

sudo systemctl stop minecraft
# create and verify the backup here
sudo systemctl start minecraft

minecraft is an installation-specific service name. A production job should check the stop result, write the archive to another filesystem or host, verify its contents, and refuse to delete the previous good backup until the new one passes those checks.

Before updating Paper or changing server software

Make a complete backup before updating Minecraft, Paper, plugins, mods, or major datapacks. Keep the previous server JAR and configuration. Paper’s documentation says to stop the server before replacing its JAR and to back up first (Paper updating documentation). Paper also warns that migration between implementations has limits: Paper and Vanilla have similar structures, but Fabric or Forge mods that add blocks, items, or other data are not supported by Paper (Paper migration documentation). Do not open the only copy of a world in a newer version if you may need to roll back; a world upgraded by a newer version may not safely return to an older one.

Bedrock Dedicated Server backups

Bedrock Dedicated Server is not a Java server with different folder names. Do not assume Java commands, dimension paths, or plugin directories apply. The exact layout varies with the Bedrock package and management environment.

  1. Warn players and stop the Bedrock server through its console, service manager, or hosting panel.
  2. Wait for a clean exit so the active world is no longer being written.
  3. Copy the complete Bedrock server directory. At minimum, preserve the active world under worlds and the server’s configuration files.
  4. Give each copy a timestamp and store it outside the live directory and, ideally, outside the live machine.
  5. Restore only while the server is stopped, then test privately before reconnecting players.

If you prefer a management interface, Bedrock Server Manager documents separate world, full, and configuration backups, plus options such as backup-on-start and backup-before-update. Its documentation warns that restoring overwrites current files and cannot be undone unless you first make a fresh backup (Bedrock Server Manager documentation PDF). A local manager backup still needs an independent disk or off-site destination to survive host failure.

Build an automated backup policy

Automation is useful only when it produces independent, recoverable copies. For an active community server, an example policy is:

  • PERFECT GIFT IDEA: The ideal birthday or holiday present for Minecraft lovers of all ages, offering hours of strategic fun and creative play
Schedule Example retention Purpose
Every hour 24 copies Recover a recent mistake or griefing incident.
Daily 14 copies Cover roughly two weeks of history.
Weekly 8 copies Retain longer-term rollback points.
Monthly 6 copies Keep historical milestones and pre-season states.

These numbers are an example, not a Minecraft requirement. Adjust them for world size, change rate, available storage, and how much progress the community can afford to lose. A private server may need less; a heavily active server may need more frequent copies.

Rules for safe automation

  • Always create a backup before updating Minecraft, server software, plugins, mods, or datapacks.
  • Create another before major world-editing or configuration work.
  • Prefer a clean stop before copying when consistency matters more than uptime.
  • If using a live-backup method, use tooling designed for files that are changing and verify its consistency; a successful copy command alone is not proof.
  • Verify that the archive exists, can be opened, has a plausible size, and contains expected world and configuration paths.
  • Do not remove the previous good copy until the new copy is complete and verified.
  • Prevent backup jobs from filling the live server’s primary disk.
  • Encrypt off-site archives and keep credentials out of public scripts, logs, and synchronized folders.
  • Record the Minecraft version, server software, loader, Java version, and backup timestamp in the filename or a companion manifest.

Choosing a destination

Destination Benefit Failure to plan for
Second local drive Fast and inexpensive recovery. A fire, theft, power event, or host failure can affect both drives.
Another machine or NAS Separates storage from the game process. It may still share a building or network failure.
Cloud or object storage Protects against local hardware loss. Sync can propagate deletion; bandwidth, cost, and credentials need management.
Host control panel Convenient scheduling and one-click restoration. It may cover only the world, stay on the same infrastructure, be non-downloadable, or disappear after account cancellation.

How to restore a self-hosted backup safely

  1. Stop the live server. Do not extract files over a running process.
  2. Preserve the current state. Make one final backup of the possibly damaged or newer directory. Move it aside instead of deleting it, for example server-current-damaged.
  3. Extract to a new directory. Use a path such as server-restored so the original remains available.
  4. Check launch settings. Confirm the startup script, Java path, memory flags, server JAR, ports, and any external database paths.
  5. Start privately. Use a different port or firewall the test instance from players. Never let two instances write to the same world.
  6. Validate the important data. Check the Overworld, Nether, End, player inventories, permissions, allowlist, bans, claims, economy, plugins, mods, datapacks, and server logs.
  7. Switch only after testing. Point the normal service or launcher at the restored directory after it passes validation.

Restoration can roll the entire community back and destroy newer progress if you overwrite the live directory. Preserve the newer directory first. A world-only backup may restore terrain while leaving permissions, plugin data, mod settings, or startup configuration missing. If one player’s inventory is damaged, a full-world rollback affects everyone; inspect a restored copy before attempting version-sensitive player-data editing.

Realms backup and restoration

Realms uses Mojang’s in-game cloud controls rather than a server folder you copy from a machine. It is therefore different from self-hosting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bedrock Realms

  1. Launch Minecraft and select Play.
  2. Open the Realms tab and select the Realm.
  3. Open Settings or the Realm Hub, then choose Manage Realm or the relevant World tab.
  4. Open Saves or Manage saves.
  5. Choose Manual or Automatic, open the three-dot menu beside the desired save, and select Restore save.

Mojang’s instructions show both label variants because the interface differs by version and device (Bedrock Realm restore instructions). Restoring reverts the Realm to the selected point, including builds, items, and progress. Treat it as destructive to newer Realm activity.

Java Realms

Open Minecraft → Minecraft Realms → select the Realm → Configure. The Configure area contains world management and backup controls. Use those controls rather than treating the Realm as a downloadable self-hosted directory (Java Realm configuration instructions).

Downloading or moving a Bedrock Realm world

Mojang’s Bedrock transfer instructions describe uploading or replacing a world in a Realm slot and then selecting Download World on the destination device. Update both devices to the most recent compatible Minecraft version before transferring (Bedrock world transfer instructions).

Backups on third-party Minecraft hosts

Hosting panels differ substantially. Some schedule backups, some charge for extra storage or retention, some save only the world, and some keep restore points on the same physical infrastructure. A restore button may overwrite the current server and may not provide a downloadable archive.

Before relying on a host, ask:

  • Which world folders, plugins, mods, configurations, scripts, and databases are included?
  • How many restore points exist, and how long are they retained?
  • Can you download an archive and store it independently?
  • Are copies geographically or physically separate from the live server?
  • Does restoring overwrite the current server, and is a pre-restore snapshot made automatically?
  • Does the service support your Java or Bedrock edition and your server software?
  • Do backups continue after cancellation, suspension, or a billing dispute?
  • What is the expected restore time, and can you test a restore without taking the public server offline?

Paper notes that shared hosts may provide built-in backup facilities and recommends checking the individual host’s documentation (Paper updating documentation). Hosting convenience does not by itself create an off-site, independently controlled backup.

If you would rather not run the server yourself, Godlike.Host Minecraft server hosting includes up to three free backups a day with restore, and SFTP/FTP access lets you download a copy and keep it off the host as well.

Common failure modes and fixes

The backup is too large

Check whether logs, caches, old maps, crash reports, or unused mod files are being archived. Do not delete files from the only live copy merely to reduce an archive. Use compression, snapshots, or incremental tooling where appropriate, and monitor free space before the job starts. Avoid running several full compression jobs simultaneously on a resource-constrained server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server will not stop

Do not copy files while the process is still writing if you can avoid it. Check the console for a save or shutdown error, allow extra time for a large world, and use the service manager’s controlled stop operation. If an emergency termination is unavoidable, preserve the current directory and treat the resulting copy as unverified until it has been opened and tested.

The archive command fails

Check destination permissions, free space, path length, locked files, and whether the destination is reachable. Keep the previous verified backup. A failed new job must not trigger deletion of the last good copy.

The restored world is missing the Nether or End

Recheck the software’s dimension layout. Vanilla may keep dimensions within the world directory, while Paper commonly uses world_nether and world_the_end. Restore every directory belonging to the same backup point, not just the apparent Overworld folder.

Plugins or mods fail after restoration

Compare the restored server JAR, loader, plugin or mod versions, plugins/, mods/, and config/ directories with the original. Read the startup log for dependency and data-version errors. Do not switch a modded world to another implementation as a troubleshooting shortcut; Paper’s migration guidance documents compatibility limits (Paper migration documentation).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The only backup is too old

Preserve the current directory and any newer partial copies before experimenting. You may be able to recover some files from logs, host snapshots, or a Realm save, but do not claim that a missing backup can be reconstructed safely. Improve frequency and retention after the incident.

The Realm restore option is missing

Check that you selected the Realm rather than a local world, open the Realm’s settings or world-management screen, and look for both Saves and Manage saves. Labels vary by interface version; use Mojang’s current Bedrock or Java instructions for the edition you own.

Operational checklist

  • Server stopped cleanly.
  • World changes flushed with save-all where supported.
  • Complete server directory copied, not only the map.
  • Backup timestamped with edition, software, and version.
  • Copy stored off the live disk.
  • Archive opened or otherwise verified.
  • Retention policy applied without deleting the last good copy first.
  • Pre-update and pre-maintenance backups scheduled.
  • Restore test completed in a separate directory and port.
  • Secrets protected and external databases exported separately.
