Back up your world before opening it with new mods or add-ons. In Java Edition, select the world under Singleplayer, choose Edit, then Make Backup; keep the resulting dated ZIP outside the active game folder and make another copy elsewhere. In Bedrock Edition, export or otherwise manually back up the world before changing it. Then test mods on a separate copy, leaving the original untouched.
Why should I back up a Minecraft world before installing mods?
A pre-mod backup gives you a version of the world from before new software has had a chance to change it. Mods and add-ons can affect how a world loads or behaves; if the modified copy becomes unusable, restoring the earlier copy is a much safer recovery path than trying to recreate the world.

The key is timing: make the backup before you open the world with the new mods. Keep the original separate from the modded test copy, and do not overwrite your only clean copy while troubleshooting. Mojang’s Java help describes saving a backup as a way to protect progress. Its Bedrock help makes an important distinction: a world made from a seed can reproduce familiar terrain, but it does not restore progress.
What is the difference between backing up a Java and a Bedrock world?
Java Edition has an in-game Make Backup option that creates a dated ZIP. Bedrock requires a manual export or backup process, or a supported platform cloud-save option; on Windows, an export produces an .mcworld file. The save locations and the way you restore a world also differ.

These are edition-level distinctions, not a promise that every platform exposes the same controls. In particular, Bedrock’s exact export and backup steps vary across Windows, Android, iPhone and iPad, and consoles. Use the backup and restore options available for the platform where you play; do not assume a Windows export procedure applies elsewhere.

Use Minecraft’s built-in backup command, then keep the archive somewhere separate from the live saves folder. Make the backup before launching the world with the new mods.
- Launch Minecraft Java Edition.
- Select Singleplayer.
- Select the world you want to protect, then choose Edit.
- Choose Make Backup. Minecraft creates a dated
.ziparchive for that world. - Use Open Backups Folder to locate the archive and confirm it is there.
- Copy the ZIP out of the active game directory. Keep a second copy on another device or in another location, such as an external drive.
The in-game command creates the archive; moving a copy elsewhere protects it from problems that affect the game directory itself. Do not treat an archive that you have not located or checked as your only safety copy. Before proceeding, confirm that the ZIP opens and that you can identify which world and backup it represents.

Where is my Minecraft world save located?
The default Java saves folder depends on the operating system, while Bedrock stores world data under a Minecraft data directory whose parent path varies. If you use a launcher profile with a custom game directory, the default Java path may not be the location that profile uses.
Java Edition default locations
- Windows:
%appdata%.minecraftsaves - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves
Look in the game directory used by the launcher profile that actually opens the world. A profile can use a different game directory, so finding an empty default saves folder does not prove that the world is missing. For the in-game backup archive, use Open Backups Folder from the world’s edit screen rather than guessing where Minecraft put it.

Bedrock Edition world data
Bedrock world data is stored under com.mojang/minecraftWorlds, but the parent location depends on the operating system. The available information does not establish one path that works across Windows, Android, iPhone and iPad, and consoles. On Windows, exporting the world creates an .mcworld file; on other platforms, follow the platform’s available manual-backup or cloud-save controls.

How do I keep modded and vanilla worlds separate?
For Java, use a separate launcher/profile instance for modded play and copy the world into that instance’s saves folder. Keep the vanilla original untouched. Mods load when the game starts, so separating the profile and the world copy provides a practical boundary between an unmodified save and a modded test.
- Make and store the vanilla backup first.
- Create or select a separate launcher/profile instance for the mods you plan to test. A profile manager such as CurseForge is one example of this approach.
- Locate the game directory used by that profile. Do not assume it shares the default
.minecraftdirectory. - Copy the world into that profile’s
savesfolder. Use the copy for modded play, not the original. - Leave the untouched vanilla world and the off-directory backup alone while testing.
CurseForge guidance also advises keeping profiles separate and zipping a world before opening it with different mods. The practical principle is broader than any particular profile manager: preserve a clean version, and make changes to a separate copy. The procedure described here is for Java profile isolation; do not assume that the same launcher-profile method applies to Bedrock.
How can I verify the backup before installing mods?
Check that you have a usable backup, not merely a file or folder you intended to create. These checks take place before the world is exposed to the new mod setup.

- Confirm the artifact exists. For Java, locate the dated ZIP through Open Backups Folder. For a Windows Bedrock export, confirm that the
.mcworldfile was produced. - Check that the archive opens. A file that cannot be opened is not a dependable recovery copy.
- Check the destination. Store the backup outside the active saves directory so it is not confused with, or replaced by, the world being tested.
- Make another copy elsewhere. Keep at least one additional copy on a different device or in another location.
- Confirm the test copy is separate. Make sure the world you plan to open with mods is in the intended modded profile’s save list, while your clean copy remains untouched.
If you cannot confirm where a profile stores its saves, resolve that before opening the world with mods. Using the wrong directory can lead you to modify the original instead of the intended test copy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I restore a Minecraft world if a mod corrupts it?
Quit the game, separate the damaged modded copy from the clean backup, and restore the pre-mod version. A seed can bring back terrain, but it cannot recover the builds, inventory, or other progress in the lost save.
- Quit Minecraft before moving or replacing world data.
- Remove or rename the damaged modded copy so it cannot be mistaken for the clean world.
- For Java, restore the pre-mod dated ZIP you saved. For Bedrock, use the manual backup or supported platform cloud save you made before the change.
- Launch the restored world and confirm that it is the pre-mod version you intended to recover.
- Keep the damaged copy separate until you are sure you no longer need it; do not overwrite the only untouched backup during troubleshooting.
If you have only a seed, you can create a world with familiar terrain, but it will not restore progress. Mojang’s Bedrock help explicitly warns that a seed does not bring progress back. That makes a seed useful for recreating a starting landscape, not as a substitute for a world backup.

What mistakes make a Minecraft backup less useful?
Most avoidable backup failures come from protecting the wrong copy, storing the backup beside the data at risk, or assuming that a seed is equivalent to a save.
- Opening the world with mods first: make the backup before the first modded launch.
- Leaving the only archive in the active game directory: copy it somewhere separate and keep a second copy elsewhere.
- Testing against the vanilla original: use a separate Java profile and a copied world.
- Assuming all launch profiles use the default folder: check the profile’s game directory.
- Confusing terrain recreation with restoration: a seed does not recover builds, inventory, or other progress.
- Assuming every Bedrock platform has the same export instructions: the exact process varies by operating system and platform.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Minecraft world backup also save my mods and launcher profile?
The backup methods described here protect the world save; they do not establish that launcher settings, mod files, or other separate configuration are included. If you need to reproduce a modded setup, keep its files and configuration separately rather than assuming the world archive contains them.
Can I use a Java world backup in Bedrock Edition, or the other way around?
The documented formats and restore methods differ by edition: Java’s in-game backup is a ZIP, while a Windows Bedrock export is an MCWORLD file. The instructions here do not establish a supported cross-edition conversion method, so do not treat either backup format as interchangeable.
Will a Bedrock cloud save always let me roll back to the version from before an add-on?
Not necessarily. The guidance supports using platform cloud saves where available, but does not establish how many versions a platform retains or whether it can select a particular earlier save. Confirm the platform’s restore options before relying on cloud storage as your only recovery copy.
